The video is from 1964's A Hard Days Night movie. This song is actually from the White Album in 1968. The lead guitar is played by Eric Clapton (not a Beatle). The Beatles were not only the best group out there during the 60's, but are still considered the best ever by most. As someone who grew up in the 1960's, it's almost impossible for me to truly convey how the Beatles changed everything.... musically and beyond.

Besides how different their music was compared to what we had been listening to, they also changed hairstyles, fashion, culture, everything. I know because I LIVED through it, being 17 in 1964. I saw them live in concert in 1964 and 1966. They are the soundtrack of my life, and at 75 I am STILL a "die hard" Beatles fan and ALSO of their SOLO careers, after they broke up as a band.

Prince played at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. The Concert for George was at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and Eric played lead on that one.

The one with Prince was for George's Induction into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL Of FAME, and to me, it was Prince "showing off" and took away from what it was really for. Most people watching it don't even know what the event was for and why they were playing it. I prefer seeing CLAPTON playing it AS HE DID on the BEATLES WHITE ALBUM.

Yes, they as a group were the biggest splash ever. John, Paul and George were performing together since 1958 when George was barely 15. After some years of constantly playing covers of Fifties rock in clubs, they started writing their own material. Between that, and picking up new drummer Ringo, and getting a makeover in their appearance by their manager, they started making a big splash in England and Germany in 1962-63. They hit the U.S. at the beginning of 1964. For a while, they had one song after another at Billboard Number 1, with no room for anyone else, and were selling two out of every three records sold. Lennon and McCartney are widely regarded as the greatest songwriters of the modern era and George Harrison is right up there with them. The fact that all 3 were in the same band is just insane! They were the first. It was called the Btritish invasion. George Harrison is playing guitar here. There were a lot of bands that came about 67-72. Great music. But the Beatles, yes, were considered the greatest. But I don't think you should ever comprar bands or musicians. It's all style in which each is different. Doesn't mean one is better than the other. But as far as being recognized. The Beatles name, songs, Band memberd, even their girlfriends. They were the most recognized. All over the world.

They had 21 Number #1 Songs on the Billboard Charts. 34 more Beatles songs made it in the Top 10! And get this, 71 made it into the Top 40 in radio rotation. In one month in 1964, the Beatles songs held the top 5 on the charts in the same week! No other band has ever reached such heights. They were masters at marketing their music, too. They put out a single 45 record with two songs every 3 months and at least one, sometimes 2 albums per year. These guys knew how to write hit songs! They even gave songs to good bands who were having trouble getting noticed. The Rolling Stones, who were The Beatles biggest rival in the 60’s, were given their first number #1 song written by The Beatles and they are still recording and touring today!

Yes, absolutely #1 in their day, mid-late to late 1960. Nobody else was close. If you remember Michael Jackson's dominance in the 1980s, The Beatles far exceeded that. it's not that each of their songs was a blockbuster. Some were but each of them added to The Beatles' mountain of greatness. They simply didn't fail us. Here's an example: I recently saw another reactor say that their music would fit in with today's music. That simply is backwards: The Beatles had such a profound effect on popular music that their influence still affects today's music more than a half-century later.

I’m in my late sixties and it’s kind of hard to explain the impact the Beatles had on our generation. I was 10 years old when the appeared on the Ed Sullivan show and even at that tender age, you just intuitively knew that things had changed in a big way. It was like a door had been kicked wide open and there was somehow a feeling of hope for the future. Weird I know but those of my vintage probably know what I mean. Unfortunately, that optimism has not panned out as well as I had hoped.

Spot on Ruth, when The Beatles started recording there were a number of bands that were just as good if not better than The Beatles, but the pure hard work and intelligence that all 4 of them put into their craft meant that by 1965 there was no band that could touch them and they continued to develop, travelling the world to develop new sounds, they would spend weeks with their equally talented producer George Martin and engineers to produce ever more groundbreaking music, the problem was they would be unable to reproduce this live, as the technology was just not available, so they stopped touring and I think this helped to cause issues with the band as all they ever did was write songs and record songs and I think the pressure and monotony took its toll.

@@simply_psi I can't agree that they broke up because of the monotony of studio work and "just" writing songs. Touring can also be monotonous and pressure filled. They broke up because it was their destiny to continue to expand their own horizons musically. And they've done exactly that. It wasn't easy for us to lose the band but it was more than made up for by their continued individual contributions.

@@ejb5034 I did not say it was the cause of the break up, but it did cause issues, Paul liked to tour and after he left he probably did more touring than all the others put together, either on his own or with Wings. There were many other factors why they split including George Harrison not being happy with only one of his songs per album, he was able to fill his first 2 albums with songs written as a Beatle, then the ever conflicting ego's of John and Paul. Yes touring is also monotonous if that is all your doing, but so is the recording and writing of songs, so most bands do a mix of all 3 as well as having time to spend the bucket loads of cash they make.

However even they owe a lot of their success to The Beatles as along with their manager Lennon and McCartney encouraged Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to start writing their own songs, they started in 1963 but did not really push their songs, however following a gurther meeting with Lennon and McCartney in 1964 where they were "selling" I Wanna Be Your Man, to The Stones, The Stones recorded the song and Mick Jagger realised the commercial potential in writing their own material and in 1965 they recorded Satisfaction and the rest as they say is history.

The Beatles were the first Supergroup. Everything about them was different. They dressed funny, they had long hair, they talked funny, they cracked jokes during interviews, and mostly, their music was very different from mainstream music at the time. They were just teenagers, but, they resonated with American and British teenagers of the day. My generation was around their age and we grew up with The Beatles as they grew up. They started with teenage love songs, then drug assisted dreams, to political messages in their songs and we all felt the same way as we matured from the simple 60’s to the hippie era through the Vietnam war, and the Cold War. And all through it, The Beatles reacted as we did. Individually, they all talented enough to make it on their own, but, when together, something magical happened with their music!!!

I don't know why you said they "dressed FUNNY"? They were wearing suits and ties on stage in 1963- 1966 during their touring years (men were wearing the same thing then) It was their HAIR that "shocked" the adults and considered it LONG! It didn't take long before boys were wearing growing out their crew/buzz, flat top hair styles or washing the grease out of their long combed back hair ( like Elvis Presley) and combing it forward. The "funny talk" was their accents, being from Liverpool, England.

From their fifth Album 'Help!' they started to change and from Rubber Soul (their sixth album)on they became who they were ment to be. It's Rubber Soul that marked them as Masters years ahead of their time. Prior to 'Help!' they were just a very succesfull rock and roll act. December 8, 1980. John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono were just returning to their apartment building in NYC a little before 11pm when he was shot and killed by a mentally ill Beatles fan. Lennon was forty years old. His death put an end to a decade long hope that The Beatles would one day get back together.

It’s weird. He was also mentally ill, did the shooting in front of the hotel where Reagan was staying, and actually thought Reagan would be a good president. Thankfully he didn’t succeed in killing him. Tragic about James Brady though.

"It is estimated that 73 million Americans were watching that night as the Beatles made their live U.S. television debut. This is interesting, this is not the version that made it onto the album, it's a bit stripped down. And yet, the footage you are watching is not what you are hearing. They are all playing acoustic guitars. But we are hearing electric guitar. They were the number one group, there was no one ahead of them while they were still together. Not that other groups didn't catch up and surpass them. The Rolling Stones caught up quickly. Their sound, as dated as it sounds now, was so fresh, they were such a huge, instant hit that producers couldn't control them as they did their other performers. The Beatles were the beginning of the huge wave of singer/songwriters, performers who also wrote their own music. Before the Beatles, producers signed artists to contracts that controlled the music they would perform. Very few wrote their own songs. The producers decided what songs an artist would sing and what musicians would accompany them. It was the Beatles that forced that change.

The Footage is from the BEATLES FIRST THEATRICAL release movie "A HARD DAY'S NIGHT" from 1964, "WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS " was from 1968. It doesn't seem "stripped down" to me. No one "surpassed" them when they were still together, and there SOUND does NOT sound "Dated" If it did, WHY do their records STILL SELL TODAY??? AND usually bought by young people who weren't even born back then, because most of us who WERE fans back then (like me, I was 17 in 1964) already HAVE all their recordings. There music STILL sounds like it could be released today and still sounds BETTER than a lot of music that is current today.

YES they were HUGE, they changed EVERY THING. I was 17 in 1964 so I lived through it all. It is hard to describe and explain what it was like when they arrived here in the U.S. on Feb 7, 1964 and their first appearance on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW on Feb. 9th, 1964 (PLUS 2 more times on Feb 16th and Feb. 23rd's Ed Sullivan Show, before returning home to England. They also played their first U.S. concert on Feb. 11, 1964 at the Washington Coliseum in Washington D.C., which was filmed and you can see the entire concert plus MANY other concert performances, promo films (videos) as they were called back then, here on You tube. I don't understand why some reactors have NO PROBLEMS playing and reacting to BEATLES VIDEOS or just their MUSIC, and are NOT BLOCKED. They WERE the biggest band in their day, and STILL considered the most influential rock band ever! In the relatively short time they recorded albums ('62-'70...8 short years) they revolutionized rock. With every album, they evolved, grew creatively, experimented and changed the entire culture of the 60's as well! John, Paul and George met in their teens, Ringo joined in '62. Yes. They were the biggest in so many ways. No. No one was in front of them. They sort of resuscitated a rather drab music scene and suddenly the flood gates opened for other British groups. But they were still doing the basic well-written teen pop song. In a year their music became startlingly sophisticated pop. They continued to top the charts along with other artists both still producing the usual fare and those who would imitate the Beatles. By 1966, they threw the world another curve with the 'Rubber Soul' album. It was mostly laid back with more acoustical guitars and the lyrics were starting to turn from the basic well-written pop song. Then came 'Revolver'. Considered by many, including myself, to be the best pop album of all-time, the Beatles were beginning to leave everyone else in the dust. The astounding thing was that 'Rubber Soul' and 'Revolver' were released in the same year and had entirely different sounds. Keep in mind that while they were putting albums out, they were also writing the songs and still tortuously touring the world. When did they have time for all of that? But then --- 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' was released in 1967. This one is also considered by many to be the best album ever. This broke the music world. No one could keep up. The band left everyone permanently in the dust. Yeah, they were pretty great ... and still are.

In early 1963 my friend’s neighbor was housing an exchange student from England who brought a Beatles Album with him. We listened and became fans months before the rest of America had heard. For the next 7 years, each album got better and more anticipated than the last one. IMHO, their best album is a toss up between “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and “Abbey Road”. Followed closely is “Beatles”, aka, The White Album, a double disk set, and “Let It Be”…..in the early days it was a rock-a-billy sound, then rock with a little r & b, then rock with psychedelics, then their own category for the last 5 or 6 albums.

I was 4 and a half when "Love Me Do", their first hit single, was released in the UK in November '62 and got to 17 in the UK charts. By Summer '63 when I was in Infant's school their 1,000,000 UK sales (in 3 months) hit "She Loves You" was a song I sang to my teacher in in afternoon free time and The Beatles were the most exciting thing going on in the country. If you want to see the effect of Beatlemania view the opening scenes of their 1964 comedy film 'A Hard Days Night' with the young extras chasing them and look at the real enthusiasm displayed and then towards the end of the film with audience (including then schoolboy Phil Collins) reactions to a live set. The film will also show how grim post war Britain was, even by the early 60s. With the Beatles we went full colour again! If you want a follow up song from this period try "I Should Have Known Better" ( In the film: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGnGoneAq999l9E ) , where the blonde schoolgirl extra is Patti Boyd (model), who made such an impression on George Harrison that he married her! If you want to understand why the Beatles are still considered the most important band of all time go through their music in order of release and you will see an astonishing progression in ambition and achievement. They also managed to break up before they jumped the shark; the fate of other bands, such as REM and U2. PS.
