Right about 8:08 he gives a pretty important tip: "keep it movin'." Don't stop the buffer in one spot our you can burn or buff through the paint. Very important to keep the buffer moving over the work. And watch the edges. If you hit the edges, like the edge of an open hood or door or deck lid, you can go through the paint pretty easily. Not a tough job he's doing here, it's a perfect DIY deal, you just need to be careful and take it easy. I sure like his tip about sticking the pad on offset to simulate an orbital motion. 5 Stars on that one!!

Sweet project...I'm an old fart living downunder. Some little bastard keyed the fender on my lovely Mitsubishi Magna (Diamante in the US) yesterday. I looked here on KZbin to see your freshly-posted video. I followed your instructions and the key scratch is gone. So I can't thank you enough for the advice. The only things I changed from your instructions was the brand of some of the items which I could purchase here but I suppose the local stuff was equivalent. Thanks heaps! Oh...I forgot to ask...P.S: I also own a black Holden Commodore Sportwagon (think new Chevy SS-which is built here- but in a wagon version which you guys can't get). How do I keep the finish from looking dusty all the time? I love the black finish but keeping it nice and glossy is doing my head in!!! LOL!

This is how you buff and polish a car like a man with a nice traditional rotary mans buffer and not with those 3lb DA toy’s that is used for what is called now paint correction. Try to do a job like this with a Dual Action polisher, you will still be trying to get it out. If you want to learn how to Buff or polish, learn on a rotary like this one first and any other polisher (DA Dual Action) will be a walk in the park.👍🏻👍🏻

I really like how to create the DA movement by off setting the pads. Every one tells me not to use a rotary because I'll burn through paint. Every one tells me to learn on a cheap da polisher first. I don't believe any of this. I want to learn using the best tool I can, because once I master it, it will save me time and make me more money. You are a great teacher! Thanks so much!

@@SweetProjectCars Thanks for the compliment. I'm naturally curious. I've experienced a lot of failures in my life, but I get over it and move on. I'm trying to reinvent myself now at 48 years of age in order to provide a legacy for my daughters. It's scary, but I:ve decided to start living life on my terms. I will not allow someone to dictate to me how much my work time is worth. I am accustomed to working 70 hours a week. I can't work for anyone but myself. I tell my oldest daughter to be curious, and learn how to learn. I encourage her to develop her talents, and to follow her own path, and to ignore skeptics, and negative people. That said, a dream is only a dream, unless you have a goal to get there. I don't want to be on my death bed with the ghosts of wasted talents asking me why I never used them to better my self. Sincere thanks for all of your help Matt

Your DeWalt polisher is commercial grade and expensive. Would you recommend that DYI'ers buy a much less expensive Dual Action buffing machine? Very nice video. Never thought of using metal polish for scratches. Good idea. I've done it mainly by hand for dealerships for a number of years now. By hand keeps good control and does not create friction to burn clear. For newbies, make sure you keep your buffer moving quickly over the area because the clear from the factory is usually VERY THIN and can burn through easily. Just like in the video, keep things moving rather quickly and not a lot of downward pressure. Something that will also help is a very LIGHT WEIGHT variable speed buffer. Light weight for newbies will allow you to get used to the machine and will be easier to control that downward pressure. Thanks for sharing.
@SweetProjectCars

Can you do the same on the bonnet for rock chip paint scratches or for that matter any part of the car as long as it is not exposed to the metal? I guess you will need the primer and the paint plus the compound if the metal is exposed. Please also suggest an economical driller. It would still be an investment close to $200 with out the drill. How long do you think the foaming pad and the buffer would last with the amount of work you do? We can multiply it by at least 2 with the amount of work we do. As always thanks again a ton.

Heck maybe I might even take my harbor freight DA polisher to our old white 91 Camry and see what I can do to that, it's paint isn't terrible either. So is there some secret that makes metal polish (the 3M stuff in this video or the Mothers Mag/aluminum in most of videos that I've watched) that makes it work better for these kinds of things or is it just that it works OK for everything and you'd still be better off having the "right" compound to do this?

@mpikas 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I'll have to try it. I always assumed that you REALLY didn't want to get a metal/aluminum polish on paint because some of them have some fairly harsh chemicals in them to chemically remove some of the oxidation you get on metals (I don't know about Mother's in particular, honestly I've stopped using it on aluminum since some of the harsher stuff works a lot faster for that). I was also surprised that in your removing oxide/clearing the center caps video you seemed to say that it doesn't leave any residue and you can go right over it with the clear where I know that a lot of the metal polishes specifically claim to leave a layer that protects the freshly polished metal and tend to leave a very slick surface (again, I don't know specifically about Mother's). I just found your channel and I've been binge-watching your videos when I have time. Back in a past life 20some years ago I did boat and car detailing and back then I tried everything but finally found that the 3M product line + a few specialized products seemed to work best. I've since gone to worrying more about performance and fixing actual problems so my "stock" of the "right stuff has been slowly dwindling (used up and in some cases gone bad, at this point I've had a few of the plastic bottles crack/fall apart), so I'm having some of "yea I've been doing that for years," some "wow, is he really going to use that on that,? and some, "LOL, I could really just trash the 3 buckets and shelf full of detailing chemicals that I have left and do everything with a compounding pad, a wool polishing pad and a tub of mothers..." ;-)

Did anyone ask/comment on the order you used foam/wool pads? I had learned to use wool for cutting, then foam for swirl/wax finessing. This also seems intuitive because the wool seems more "abrasive" than foam. I'd be interested to hear your feedback on this. (Specifically, I use Meguirer's Fine Cut for scratch removal (wool), then 3M swirl remover (foam), then finesse wax (softer foam). I like the tip on metal polish -- if cheaper than Meguires, but can't see your results in the sun.

Good instruction but it is ok to work clean.While pads do last a long time they do need to be cleaned or replaced. Even though you were planning to polish I would never recommend rubbing your dirty hand across dry paint, migh as well drag some 2000 grit sandpaper across it. I get it though for the DIY guy but still they should try to do it right.

WOW WOW WOW !!! I love your videos wish you were near me. I bought all the stuff to do it perhaps this summer I will.. I am afraid to do this on my Mustang it color is Kona Blue which is easly scratched and shows everything just like a black car does... I bought it new some yrs ago and I always used synthetic spray on wax and I never drive it in winter. I read if you do the ceramic coat never use carnuba wax. I cannot afford ceramic coating unless I do myself but I hear you must prepare the paint b4 u do it ??. But it now shows swirl marks. and I don't have a garage. I have a car cover I use in winter to store the car but it must not really protect it like it should be because when it rains the cover freezes and im sure it leaves makes on the paint. I know you must do this on a cool surface . I wish you were near me to show me how to do it properly without burning through clear coat .. My aluminum hood is corroding along the edge which is a known Ford problem on many Ford cars and Ford will not fix it unless u sue them and no guarantee you will win or that the corrosion comes back very disappointing on a car you take care of (( SO NO MORE FORDS FOR ME !!! )) . Since I never drive in winter I was so upset Ford would not fix a known problem so I bought a new hood but yet to install it after painting it because Im afraid it will happen again but I hear these corroding problem even happens on cars that are garaged even the 2018 models are corroding now !!!. I also own a Chrysler Crossfire I bought used and unloved.. with big spots of clear coat peeling like fenders hood and both mirrors and the pop up spoiler and on top of the roof along the drain channels . I see some guys use the 2k clear coat but I never see this sold in any local auto parts store IN Aberdump Maryland lololol. THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEOS

Dr. you can ruin paint with pretty much anything if not done correctly...I found with a rotary you can get great results faster. if you use a rotary you just keep it moving and the pressure you apply is very minimal unless you are doing headlights with mother metal polish.
