Yeah it's definitely missing a TON of content. The training modes and improving your skill level offline were like the best parts of the original Wii Sports games, and that's totally gone now. Online play is cool, but offline play shouldn't have suffered for it. And the free update model strikes again by making us wait for a complete game months after release. Honestly I'm still having a lot of fun with the game and I think it's solid, but it has sooooo many problems that are tough to ignore. I kinda like Soccer tho not gonna lie

personally I played the previous nintendo sports games with my whole family, switch sports feels way less accessible considering my parents have to play as "guests" and a couple of the games are way more complicated controls wise like volleyball and football. I really dislike online play being the only way to unlock new content, as really that means I have to play it by myself... which feels a bit awkward. I pre-ordered it because I wanted the free water bottle, but im seriously enjoying the water bottle more than the game 😩

Yeah this should first and foremost be a local multilayer game. I can't see myself playing against randoms online. This game will only come out with others. And good point regarding accessibility. Everyone I was with groaned when they had to learn how the sword fighting game worked. The old wii sports was just straight out intuitive. Didn't need to learn different moves.

I was never really too interested in the Mario sports games (I own one & watched videos of others) but I grew up with Wii Sports (Resort) & freaking love it. It's a mixed bag but I still really like the game personally. Volleyball is satisfying to pull off and soccer is a more fleshed out basketball. I even like badminton over tennis cause it's more fast paced The lack of sports and side modes is its worst offense, even if resort also had its duds. the collectibles and rank mode will determine if you'll get $40 worth of playtime out of it. I still think it's a fun game and the sports play fundamentally diff enough, but they gutted so much of local play it leaves so much to be desired

The problem I have with this game is how I'm forced to play online to unlock more customization and wait a whole week for next sets of customization. I really want to unlock stuff offline and at anytime. Still the game is good.

Actually I think u can earn rewards with accounts with no online membership in the online mode but it forces you to go against cpu instead of kicking u out when u don't have a online membership 🤔 so idk why they don't just add unlocking customization items for offline mode 😀 it makes no sense. I'd also not like to have to wait a week for unlocking more stuff. They probably do that to get people to come back to it every week, but I wish they're was just a bit more to every week 😢

Since I don’t have Nintendo Switch Online, I have no interest in a game like this that requires the online to get a full experience. It’s basically a game that is locked by a paywall. Like, behind these cute, bright visuals, there’s a dark side here, with Nintendo basically forcing you to buy the online to get a complete experience! Furthermore, the games look fairly basic. Most of the games don’t look much more enhanced from 2006. Soccer seems like the exception though, but it looks way too strange… if that makes sense. The ball is huge and the game is controlled with the control stick to move, but it does actually seem not bad. Not to mention that 3 of the sports involve hitting an object over a net to hit the other side. Seems like there isn’t as much variation as there should be. There’s also not many side games, which seems lazy. I also don’t like the new environments or characters. Doesn’t feel very Nintendo-like. The main environment, Spocco Square, doesn’t have anywhere near the same amount of charm as Wuhu Island. Also, Miis were just so great and replacing them with these Sports Mates really wasn’t the best decision in my opinion. At least Wii Sports club prioritized Miis, had okay environments, had free online, had sports that all felt different, and had several side games and stamps.

i completely agree, the wii sports games have been such a big part of my childhood and some of my favourite games of all time and i was so excited, soon after the announcement i became a bit disappointed because of the miis and wuhu island missing but i still had a bit of hope but im so glad i watched thos video because im not buying it at all now, im not going to lie im tempted to get it but im not. im going to set up my wii u and started playing wii sports again and even other games because nintendo games have went downhill and nintendo are just greedy now.

Technically, you're incorrect. If you don't have the online membership, you can still unlock the content by using the "play online" mode, but it will just match you with bots instead. But I can't blame you for not knowing that, since it's so bizzare.

Volleyball has been the most responsive of the games I've played. And my blocking is so on point now that I can almost block the ball every time. Almost. Some people are really good with fake outs spikes and I love it.

for the Chambara i defenitely agree.. i was really looking forward to slapping people but it seems the controls only barely react half of the time.. like i will be swinging horizontally and the game will make my character swing vertically like that's not the motion i did at all. so i end up losing not because of lack of skill but just because the game didn't pick up on the motion i actually made.. wich is very frustrating.. so i've been gravitating more towards bowling and batminton.. since those actually do seem to work for me.. also the fact the ball goes haywire in your bowling games has to do with the way you flick your wrist.. i've always had the same with the wii but since the joycons are lighter they are easier to maneuver for me and don't cause as much wrist strain (wich is the main reason i always end up way off the mark on the wii) so yeah chambarra defenitely needs a bit of an update in ways of motion control.. because it just feels like i'm playing with a big handicap against someone who seemingly doesn't have this issue. i don't mind the online but i agree there should be more modes.. my guess is they will probably add more and more. i do understand the fact that they are rolling more stuff out over time as it allows them to take their time on these other modes so though it is a bummer that we have to wait for golf (and i would really love to see a return of baseball as i have some good memories of that mode on the wii.. like that time i smacked my dumbass brother over the head pretty hard with my wiimote after already warning him several times to not get close or i might hit him accidentally) it might mean that we'll get a more polished end result than if they had just added it now when it's simply just not ready..

i was on the same page as you were when i saw the reveal. but for the sake of giving it a full chance before i decided, i played the game for 3 days this past weekend. aaaand i’m still feeling the same. the lack of modes (POUR ONE OUT FOR 100 PIN BOWLING) is really disappointing. the change to bowling controls is bizarre and i’d love to hear their reasoning for changing it after 16 years. i don’t really like how unlocking cosmetics and stuff is randomized. if i earned the points, i want to be able to choose what i’m getting with them. seems like common sense to me lol. the whole “have this hollow game for $60 and there will be free updates later!” format is really a bummer.

I’ll be completely honest, this is the most shameless and disappointing product that Nintendo has released. It’s saddening to see the Wii Sports brand being used for such a lackluster game. The game at face value is fine, but.. it just feels extremely lackluster in content. For 40 dollars, you’re only getting six sports, SIX! All of them widely vary in quality, with 3 games having the exact same concept. Not to mention the game is launching incomplete without Golf and even gameplay features like the leg strap feature later. Wii Sports Resort had twice the number of games and included all of its gameplay features for the same price, so there’s no reason why Switch Sports should be so lacking. I said this before and I’ll say it again, the Sportsmates feel completely out of place in a Wii Sports sequel, and look so uninspired and look almost identical to each other. It’s extremely disappointing that Nintendo went with these soulless, unoriginal, and minimalistic avatars in favor of the Miis which have been so beloved and widely used for over 15 years now. Yes, you can still play as your Mii, but it’s obvious that the focus has shifted away from them. Overall, it’s saddening to see such a low quality product come out of Nintendo in house. I know they can do much better than this. They’ve made some of my favorite video games and characters of all time, and it just sucks to see this game being pumped out just to cash off the success of the Wii Sports franchise by brand alone.

You hate to see it. The wasted potential eats at my experience. It's a very pretty game for the Switch, and I love what it's striving for. I just wish it had more development overall (more games or minigames & customizations). ;_; I have a save with everything unlocked, and there's 14 sets as of the 1.1 update. Very bare, and very time locked. I also hate that it's locked to each account. So uh. A month later. I'm still kinda playing it myself. Only like- 2 hours a week though, which is about enough time to get all the customization options for a week. this is a great explanation of why i think this game really does not hold the title of being a Wii Sports game well, if at all. the game is so lacking in every area, it's obvious things were rushed, offline play is practically useless, the sports themselves have weird controls... i dunno. also tennis has worse controls than Wii Sports Club. i loved how tennis played in that game, and they just took several steps backwards by making all the controls similar to the original Wii Sports rather than the updated gyro controls from Wii Sports Resort and Wii Sports Club. basing the game off the original Wii Sports rather than the games that built on and improved Wii Sports, really tells me that this is just an attempt to cash in on the Wii Sports name more than anything.

I don’t understand peoples exuberant hate towards Nintendo switch sports. Sure its not as good as wii sports resort, but its certainly far superior than no game at all. Ive been playing recently and other than badminton and chambara the game is really fun and exciting. Volleyball (in my opinion) being the highlight of the game with its fluid motion and responsiveness. The game is certainly an improvement from Wii sports club and in some departments even greater than the original wii sports, although I do prefer wii sports resort for the Nintendo wii. Overall the game is getting a lot of undeserved hate just because the iconic miis were moved out of the spotlight, but its not like they are unplayable, many people still use the miis online and there are perfectly fine. The sports mates aren’t terrible either, in the direct they seemed odd but after playing a few hours of the game they really start to grow on you. The combination of the better technology of the Joy-con and the graphics and running power of a Nintendo switch, it makes for a really great game to either play with family or friends

I haven't played it, but from what I've seen, here are the things that I would want to see changed/added for this game that I think would improve it drastically while making it seem realistic: 1: Add some sort of offline way to obtain items that would be doable and not tedious, but not as fast as the online mode which would still bring people to the online mode if they want the items quickly. 2: Put the Miis on the cover of the box, or at least on the title screen, as well as bouncing around Spocco Square. It will add to the experience and make it feel more like a Wii Sports entry rather than a Wii Sports ripoff for the Xbox 360 3: Add Wuhu Island DLC for diehard fans, bringing back Wii Sports Resort games but with better graphics and an overall remastered look (including Golf on Wedge Island). 4: I know this is a stretch and more than likely impossible, but being able to have a free-roaming mode that would allow the player to walk around Spocco Square like an open world game would be fantastic. Like I said, it's more than likely impossible, but we can dream, right? If I think of anything else, I'll add it to the list.

I hate to mention Xenoblade 2 but between that and this they both look so disappointing to me and it makes me feel worse because I thought they would never happen, a direct sequel to XBC1 (which was surprising at the time, people forget) and a return of the Sports series, they did them and they turn out like this ): I kept hoping for another DKCR, or even Mario Odyssey 2 (I didn’t really like Odyssey, but the engine had a lot of potential) and at this point maybe it’s better that they don’t make them? But new F-Zero would still be nice… knock on wood. This gen has been so dissapointing from Nintendo TBFH, the Wii U gen was better, it’s sad Nintendo are so successful this gen because the hybrid console thing is hard carrying them and they’re being lazy with games. Every single Nintendo IP disappointed me or got nothing this gen other than like Metroid.

Whilst this game does have some good things going for it, it is suffering from prioritising online play over local play. If most of a game’s content is online play, then that game has a limited lifespan. As some point in the future, whether in 5 years, 10 years or more, the online servers will shut down. And so most of the game’s content will be gone. This is fine if the online play is meant for said game, but the Nintendo Sports games are at their best in local play. So a greater focus should’ve been put into local play. Not to mention, these Nintendo Sports games are *timeless* games. They’re fun and great to play no matter how many years have passed. I’m sadly predicting that this game is gonna fade into obscurity within a few years (unless they give it major content updates I guess) In short, not every game is meant to have a great focus on online play. And this is one of them.

While I have to agree on some points, there are a few things I personally disagree on. 1. I figured that in switch sports if you really get a good grip on the game mechanics like using precise movements, good timing and strategy, which I love about certain sports in that game especially at tennis, badminton, volleyball and football, it's fun and rewarding. 2. I feel like you might have had problems with the controlls yourself like at bowling. It really matters how you hold the joy-con and how you stand. As for me it worked very well. 3. Some sports just require some patience and practise. For me it was learning by doing which I enjoyed pretty much for almost every sport. (Not a fan of chambara though for the reasons you mentioned) 4. And last but not least football. I love how they pulled off football. Again the strategy , the different techniques and the teamplay. I'm honestly glad you can't kick other players. For me it would just destroy the fairness and the togetherness of that sport which I so much enjoy. It just would be clowning around in my opinion. Must be my nature though of beeing quiet competetive and highly goal with the help of skills (🙃) oriented. So please no football-game fixing! It is in my opionion perfect as it is! Btw I still played all Wii sports games ( Wii sports/Wii sports resort) for a couple times a week prior to this game. So have have a direct comparison between all these games. The biggest disappointment for me is chambara which was way better in Wii sports resort. Tennis is equally fun for me in both games. Bowling is quite fun with that battle royale mode, especially with the obstacles mode. But my favourite sport from wii sports is yet to arrive. Golf! 😄So we'll see. Of course I value your opinion as everyone has different tastes and experiences. Like I mentioned I definitly agree with you on some points like the lack of content and the nonsense single player mode. 👍

Very well, so then allow me to explain how my mind works on this. When Nintendo releases a game in a series and that game has less content than the game that came before it, it's already questionable. When they announce _before_ the game is out that said missing content will release as a free update, it pretty much feels like they're launching the game early without all of its components and finishing it later. You might think "well this is better than waiting longer" but it's not because it secures first impressions that are hard to fix later down the line. For example, the leg strap accessory which a lot of reviews and people have said they feel is completely omissible as it's used for one mode of the game that isn't that very fun. Nintendo came out and said that the leg strap will later be used for regular soccer games in an update, but the problem already exists now that people think it's worthless. Your last point about paid DLC is in line with what developers tend to do which is charge money for something completely new and not intended for base game. Splatoon 2 or Breath of the Wild, hell even Smash Ultimate, are great examples of what a paid DLC can look like.

@@voyan38 While you are making some good points the "less content than its predecessor" point fails to acknowledge the context around the release of each those games. I already wrote about that at length for the video on the Nintendo Hero channel, but I'm gonna repeat it here anyway. The previous entry in this series (Wii Sports Resort) acted as the launch title for the Wii Motion Plus, which puts a lot of emphasis on the games quality, to the extent where it could be a make or break scenario for the whole console. Let me explain: Wii Sports Resort was entirely blocked behind the paywall of having the Motion Plus addon, so one of it's main purposes was to show that this addon was worth it's money, otherwise it runs the risk of appearing like a big scam. So it was fleshed out to a way above standard extent, since so much weight rested on the performance of that game. On the other hand, it also had the job of moving the Motion Plus to as many players as possible to make the addon a stable ground to build on, since the basic motion controls were really not that great. So similarly to how exclusive launch titles create hype to move console units (see e.g. how PS consoles pull up as many timed console exclusives as they can to make those move there console), so Wii Sports Resort just got loaded with content beyond what was reasonable for the price point. So holding Switch Sports to THAT as a standard seems almost ignorant, since this is "just another game in the library". Regarding the original Wii Sports, that game just gets put on a pedestal it doesn't deserve. Ridiculously overinflated sales numbers due to being THE console packaged title, the training modes hold content for about 20 mins each, unless you are into grinding repetitive high scores. Apparently everyone forgot how unreliable the original WiiMotes' motion controls were, making the precision modes frustrating on top of being repetitive. Anyway, nostalgia bias rant over. Is Nintendo Switch Sports as good as Wii Sports Resort? No Should that be the expectiation? No (see above) Is it better than Wii Sports? Hell yes it is Are free updates a bad thing? No, unless the base game was actually unfinished (meaning not fully functional/working) Should more single-player/offline content exist? Yes somewhat, but with a console that already severly handicaps the offline/single-player experience by not being playable in handheld mode, I can also kinda understand the decision to just drop that section of the playerbase entirely, even though a clearer communication on that point would be nice. Now for some more off-shooting points. I would love to have a parallel world of sorts where Nintendo doesn't mention the late addition of Golf and just suddenly drop that as a 5$ DLC in half a year. Because, despite what you said about DLCs adding new dimensions to the game instead of simple content extensions, I would still bet money that both the base game and the the Golf DLC would be betywr recieved than they are now, which seems so counter-intuitive. Because a lot of games also got and get content DLC and there's way fewer complaints. Both Mario Kart 8 and 8 Deluxe got them, 3D World's switch port got it, New Super Mario Bros U got it (even though that became a stand-alone later), the Smash Bros Ultimate fighter pass was essentially that (I would start adding examples outside the Nintendo realm, but those would be on an uneven playing field, since the Nintendo community is already incredibly whihy to begin with), and not a single time have I seen someone go "Well that should have been here from the start". But give it to players for free, like with Animal Crossing, Super Mario Party (I'll admit that one was odd) and now Switch Sports and it suddenly is a big complaint. It's just weird how the fact that people have or don't have to pay extra money for something can influence perception in such way. Enough for the off-shoot, I get that the game feels a bit lacking for the 40$ it costs right now, but while that is partly on the game lacking submodes and offline content, it is also on overly high expectations due to being compared with the great launch titles that Nintendo usually produces. And, given that they are the console flagships, they put a lot more work into them than the games (and their price) alone warrant. Edit: I just now understood your point regaring the leg strap since the game's physical copy comes packaged with it (which I wasn't aware of) and yes, that's bad, and that is also the kind of functionality that should NEVER be delayed to an update since, as I mentioned earlier, that makes the game feel unfinished. Obvious exceptions to that rule are games clearly marked as Early Access. So that is definitely a huge f*ck up on their part.
