Yesssss, lads! Finally, we get a confirmation on what we all already knew about the Switch 2! (I did hear Nintendo wasn’t too thrilled with all the leak - must be tough being the worst-kept secret in gaming). Aesthetically, it does look more polished and refined, which is great! Fingers crossed the ergonomics are solid and that battery life actually holds up, especially with that massive screen now! As for the graphics power, performance and hardwared mmm I’m holding my horses until we see actual gameplay footage and specs revealed (though I wouldn’t mind if you mates got your hands on it early 🤞). Either way, I think it’s going to be an exciting ride with this new console. Happy and fun times ahead, as you always say! 🍻🤘

A lot of people thought that gameplay footage was Mario Kart 8. It’s nice Nintendo finally publicly acknowledged the console we all knew everything about already, but I don’t think this reveal will generate any more interest or enthusiasm for the Switch 2.

Yes, and remember they were not counting on the leaks we've had as of recently, so I believe that it was a subtle hint they left for us, knowing a lot of people would overanalyse this trailer before the Direct, but with the leaks, we've known about the optical sensor from the beginning, it now serves as mere confirmation of our suspicions and not as a big surprise as they surely intended

I think the non compatible games will mean things like ring fit and labo where you need the old joy con to connect in some way like with the ring in ring fit. I don’t think it’s much to worry about. Also I totally thought the same thing with the sideways joy con but I did not clock that with the wristband it actually looks like a mouse! That’s too clever to be a coincidence. Either way we got some good days ahead of us. Can’t wait to see what’s to come!

@kraenk12 I'm sure the screen will be great. LCD screens came a long way. Yet, I don't feel the need to buy systems brand new. I bought my 1st Switch after the OLED came out and I'm glad I waited and I bought it at a pawn shop for 199.99 like new. One reason I'm glad I waited was there was games everywhere for cheap, aftermarket controllers were cheap, and most games I was looking forward to were 80% to 90% cheaper by then.

I’m just so ready for a new Mario Kart. 8 will be 11 years old this May. Mario Kart and Metroid would be two fantastic launch window games too. One that has broad appeal, and one that needs more broad appeal that could be one of the highest rated games of the year. As for the magnetic attachment, it’s basically held in by an electric shock that’s administered to engage the extremely strong magnet. There’s videos on that technology.

The kickstand on the OLED is perfect. The new kickstand seems like a one step forward, two steps back kind of thing. It's not as bad as the original kickstand, but it looks a lot more flimsy than the OLEDs. And it looks like they removed the IR sensor so the 3 games that used it (Ring Fit, 1 2 Switch, LABO) will boot up, but wont operate like intended. Thats why they have the disclosure.

I am worried of the joycons, the clip in feature looks like it can cause a lot of trouble with that dongle so exposed, especially for younger kids, they may end up accidently break it.

It's electromagnets and not just a clip in. When you connect it, the electromagnets are activated you cannot bend or snap anything.

@Craigy2818 that's exactly the problem depending of how strong the magnets are it may can cause to snap the dongle if the joycon isn't placed correctly, besides idk how much I can trust a magnet to hold the joycon while attached to the screen. The slide in feature in my eyes is just miles safer and easier to patent for 3rd party manufacturers.

I think when they are taken off it is pretty exposed. It looks like there is a small slot on the bottom of the insert for the Joy-Con that may be for a physical locking mechanism, by its hard to make out a matching switch on the bottom of the console.

Well, this is just a teaser of the design of switch 2. There's more to come in the direct especially the internal specs and the system of the switch 2. The expectation is a major upgrade for the internal specs. For the design, they made improvements in the joycons (assuming the leaks are true with hall effect joycons). We'll see on April 2.

Yeah, it was a bit anticlimactic considering how much we've been waiting, it being released out of nowehere and showing pretty much what we already knew because of leakers. Also, the brief glimpse of the new Mario Kart didn't help with understanding the power of the new console. That being said, I was happy to confirm that they kept the design instead of trading it for some cheap gimmick just to "innovate" and that retrocompatibility in both formats is confirmed. Those two things were really important for me. I'm sure that there will be more hype in April once people finally see some new games.

I think the N64 to the Gamecube was the last pure, leap in power and power only. I appreciate they changed the controllers substantially, but the Gamecube really was a decent jump in power over the N64. It was a very competitive console at the time because of the Flipper GPU which enabled the Gamecube to even outperform the more powerful Xbox in some situations. In fact the Flipper was soo good that it was the basis for the Hollywood GPU in the Wii.

On the 'not all games are fully supported' - the IR camera is gone from the right joycon. That's what it means is my guess. The small handful of games that made some use of that will need an old school joycon pairing with it to work. The IR scanner for the mouse can't actually double as an IR camera as there is no black glass lens on it. The black glass you see on any IR device that works across open space is what blocks out non-IR wavelengths so the optical sensor can track IR alone. Mouses don't have black glass as being flat against a table blocks outside light by design - so the sensor only sees the light from its own IR LED.

The only thing that bothers me about the reveal is that we already know so much about it. I think if it wasn't for all the leaks, we probably wouldn't have seen this teaser until March, with the Direct following in April and Switch 2 release in June. People would probably have been more excited seeing the console for the first time and the wait wouldn't have been this long. Everything would have went much smoother, especially for Nintendo. I think the system looks great and I'm excited to play 24-player Mario Kart, Metroid Prime 4 and everything else the Switch 2 will bring in the future.

An upgrade feature for me would be: While Switch 2 is in handheld mode it plays the Switch 1 games in docked mode, so 1080p on the go! So all last gen games automatically looking better on the new Switch 2 display! And if we are at it, how about upscaling the old games to 4k TVs via the dock? There is 3rd party adapters out there which does that even without DLSS - so even Nintendo can do it.

Its a far more mature design than I had anticipated, colours are there but understated giving it more sleak look. I am unexpectedly quite taken with it. The backwards compatibility for physical cartridges confirmation is great with the caveat stating developer support required for it though which I had suspected to be the catch from the beginning. It will be interesting to see who will spend the resources to make their old games Switch 2 compatible and if Nintendo provide the support necessary to do so to make it worth it for them. Indies might struggle if the Cost Benefit analysis proves too much. All that said, I am excited for the 2nd April but I will remain on the station platform of the Hype Train until I see the list of games both backwards compatible and new for it. Expecting to miss out on the many order rounds to scalpers and other fans. Oh well, will be waiting to see what games are announced anyway. Nice to see the Leaks were right for once lol

I suspect that the chip architecture will be similar enough, if not the same, so that everything that runs on Switch 1 natively will also run on Switch 2 natively but with some potential for minor issues. Software incompatibility will more than likely be solely about something physical like labo or ring fit or anything that requires the IR sensor that isn't on the new joycons.

I agree with your comments about the PS5. I bought it day 1 and there’s only been a few great first party games on it. Both Xbox and PS are not the consoles they used to be. Xbox360 was amazing! Now Xbox is dead. PS3 and PS4 were great! But there’s only a few great games on PS5. I’m not sure what’s happened to those two companies. Luckily we have Nintendo to keep producing heaps of great games.

My only complaint,if you even want to call it that, is that I would have liked more color on the joycons. I love all the bright switch 1 joycons have, and really like the standard red/blue ones. The color accents on the switch 2 joycons do look nice, but I just like more color. This is too much solid black for me. I wish they’d made the buttons also be in the accent color. That would have looked really nice imo. And I hope they do have some more colorful options available at some point. But other than that minor nitpick, it’s exactly what I wanted. Just the switch, but better. And I think k calling it switch 2 was definitely the smartest move, as it makes it absolutely clear that it’s an all new console. I feel like Wii U sounded like an accessory for the Wii, and the console also looked almost exactly like the Wii, so I’m sure that messed things up. None too shabby! I'm okay with a high-end LCD screen (still using my v2 Switch) and I'm hoping that is mouse functionality. Who knows, might even get a keyboard accessory! Main thing will be playing Xenoblade with good AA at 1440p docked. If it gives me that I'm happy. My only fear is it being heavy and uncomfortable like the Steam deck with its bigger form factor, though internal components might have driven this rather than screen size. Fingers crossed its still comfy to hold. Finally I hope they have some more colourful versions, I'm still in love with my Animal Crossing edition dock and joycons. Got it first weekend of lockdown on my 40th birthday, couldn't pub-crawl like I planned but grew a bit of an emotional attachment to that Mr Tom Nook themed Switch!

It's not very obvious until you watch it in slow motion but when the Joycon is put on it's side like a mouse it clips into a wider rail. This is probably to stabilise the Joycon as a mouse.

I am SO glad Nintendo are clearly taking a more conservative approach to their hardware. Their games and IP are enough on their own to differentiate them from the other companies. Their need to make the hardware so different and gimmicky has really hurt them in the past, and as you said I think they've learnt from that. I'm not for one second saying it was a good thing that Iwata passed away, and may God rest his soul, he was a revolutionary. But I can't help but feel if he was still associated with Nintendo, they would still be holding on too tight to that 'must be wildly different and unique' mentality, and I think it would still be costing them, certainly from a hardware and market-perception point of view. This was the most sensible, straightforward and un-gimmicky console trailer they've ever done. We are looking at a very different Nintendo.

The backwards compatibility caveat is the IR camera which is clearly absent from these new joycons, meaning LABO won't work at all and games that used it for minor things won't be able to do that anymore.

I'm worried about the magnets on the joycons. I'm scared that I'll either have to pull too hard, and accidentally have the system slip out of my hands, or it will be too flimsy that when I'm playing Elden Ring I'll accidentally rip one of and risk dropping the system. * I think the warning about games won't work is for Labo, and anything that uses the IR sensor. While I think there might be an IR sensor in the right Joycon I think it's for mouse capability and won't function for games like the OG Switch. Also I think it just covers their ass, in case there is ANY compatibility issues they didn't foresee.

The shape of the kickstand suggests aluminium rather than plastc. If the body is also metal that would make it feel much more premium.

When it comes to compability issue with current NS games I can think of games that use additional accesories for holding joycons, like Ring Fit and it obvoiusly won't fit bigger ones :)

I am disappointed that the screen is a downgrade compared to the switch oled screen. No oled screen and large black bezels on the side (pause at 1:48 you will see). Seriously? We are in 2025 and they still include bezels ? It's so outdated.

I think the insides dictated the screen size with bigger chips / card etc. They then probably got a hugely tempting deal with Samsung on LCD screens. To be honest, as long as it's a quality LCD I'm okay. Still enjoying the LCD on the v2 Switch.

Mario Kart is not a big system seller. Its that second or third game everyone buys, but its never been a killer app. Look at MK8 on WiiU. That was the biggest new MK since the leap to 3D in 64. Didn't save WiiU. this Switch 2 title looks so close to MK8 people keep asking if its the same game. Think of every killer app game ever and not once do you wonder if its an old game. Killer app games clearly communicate instantly that they are fresh and do something new. This MK trailer did not. The trailer showed 24 starting blocks, so that will be one feature. Is more karts a thing people wanted? Sounds like chaos to me unless you turn items off, in which case yeah it might get interesting, but not killer app interesting. If MK9 is the flag ship title then Switch 2 is in trouble. BotW/TotK 4K, Mario Odyssey 2, Splatoon 4, and Smash Ultimate 2 are also not killer apps. Thats basically the WiiU era library right there. There needs to be a big secret sauce game for Nintendo to sell beyond their loyal 10+ million fanbase.
