Though my mom didn't vlog, she was an intense Facebook mom. While she didn't record me, she posted hundreds of photos of me to her public Facebook without my consent. I completely agree with the daughters hard stance.... I grew up knowing hundreds of strangers had seen and heard all of my embarrassing moments, photos I didn't want posted. There is no ethical way to post your children to the Internet, because no child is able to consent to content being made about them.

I very, very rarely post pics of my kids on Facebook. If I want my family to see any, I send them to them directly. Even with privacy settings, you can never be sure that no one else can see them. And in my case, even with (what I assumed was) pretty tight settings, my MIL would take my photos and post them on her Facebook. And then my FIL (who I actually had blocked) would get them from her FB and post them to his, with my kids names! I had him blocked because he would not be careful about who he friended, and would massively overshare. When I realized what was happening, I felt extremely violated.
@ashleyworgull

I wonder why parents with good intentions don't just record their kids as they please and then just don't post it. Maybe when the kid turns 18 they can decide what gets uploaded and what doesn't and then at that point deal with the money situation 🤷‍♀️ that way the parents have that digital timeline to look back on and reminisce and the child (now adult) consents to what could be shown

It’s a different world that I’m learning about. I wish I could pick your brain or you could just tell me about the LDS/mormon Utah culture. It’s fascinating, heartbreaking and super disturbing. I’ve been nothing a theme in our country: different communities who thrive on punishment culture. They seem to get excited, salivating when it’s their time to punish, when they think someone has wronged, and they package it as tradition or hierarchy, but it’s a giddiness to inflict some kind of hurt upon others. Anyway, thank you for sharing. I bet you have some stories from your days in Utah, and I’m glad you’re free. 💙

@Heydodoakskdkdjf I've noticed that too! There are so many younger Millennials and Gen Zers who superficially look like they carry progressive beliefs, but when you look closer, it's like they only changed superficially and not deep down. They still appeal to authority, think in terms of black and white, proselytize, struggle with nuance/ambiguity and the unknown, socially ostracize and eviscerate people who don't conform to the group's ideas, try to force people into roles and boxes, and insist on an us versus them mentality (a zero-sum mentality). It makes me realize that these people... while they might've stopped with the "homosexuality is a sin" sort of talk, they really haven't deconstructed in any other sort of way. To continue with that example, they just moved from "being gay is a sin" to "being a homophobe is a sin", in terms of evolution.

My oldest daughter (33) had her 1st child in February. She requested, upon finding she was pregnant, not to share pictures of her child online with my Facebook friends or on my blog. She definitely didn't mean it should be a privilege, but right now it is unfortunately. It should be a given, it should be shared by all. No child deserves to starve, no parent deserves to watch their children starve, no person deserves to starve. No one deserves to starve or live in a food desert. She meant well in what she said, Swoop is absolutely so kind. I worked as a manager of a middle school kitchen and the amount of times I was supposed to THROW AWAY good food while there were a bunch of kids who couldn't afford to eat was astounding. Well fuck that, I fed ever damn kid whether they could pay or not. To be a child with hunger pains surrounded by kids eating great food... It's just cruel. 2 of those angels didn't even eat over the weekends. So every Friday we hooked them up, emptied their backpacks in my office and filled both bags with milk, sandwiches, cereals their younger siblings would like, vegetables, cookies, juices, whatever they wanted. None of us ever got caught but if we had we would've been fired and prosecuted by USDA because it's their property technically. Miss those kiddos. No child deserves to be hungry.

Another excellent doc from you, Swoop. One of your very best. As someone who does not watch family vloggers, I had no idea of the evil they do. Invasion of the child's privacy, 24/7 filming when there are child labor laws. Ruby's daughter told a truly heartbreaking story about wanting to mourn alone and not being allowed. And no friends because other kids don't want to be embarrassed. That this articulate and brave young woman was able to survive emotionally is a miracle. In short: she was denied a life by her parents who only cared about money. Ruby AND her husband should be in prison for life with no parole. It's a travesty that they should ever be released!

The fact that she has to say she's not there to "provide the solution" is exceptionally depressing to me. She's talking TO THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE. SHE is not the person who SHOULD have to provide a solution anyway! THEY'RE. IN. CHARGE. They're the ones who should be told what the problems are and THEY find the solution. THEY search for experts to look into the problem that's been highlighted to them so THEY can find the solution. How the hell is a singular person without any power supposed to rock up with a folder of the perfect solution? That's not her job! That's theirs! And shame on them that it's taken this long to even bother at least faking caring about hearing about the problem, let alone looking for a solution.

As a disabled adult who was a disabled child, absolutely the hell not. We are not here for inspiration. We're people. And if it was really about education about said disability, it wouldn't center the "poor martyr parents." I am so sick of seeing those accounts.
@gwendolynstata3775
@gwendolynstata3775 27 күн бұрын
Yeah, those accounts have all the same worst-of-the-worst content that family channels with non-disabled kids have (bathtime, toilet training, meltdowns, bad days, etc), but throw up the "it's EDUCATIONAL!" as a shield and everyone just sort of allows it despite the fact that there are already resources out there that don't exploit kids to give you the basics of whichever disability there is. But like you said, it's less about, "here are some definitions and signs of x in this disability/disease/syndrome/etc" and WAY more about "and this is why you shouldn't give ME, THE MOMMY, dirty looks when my kid has a meltdown in the store because I'm actually a GOOD Mama, and actually deserve a medal for taking my kid out in public at all!"

I once went up to a disabled woman at a conference after she spoke and told her I found her so inspiring. When she asked "why?" I talked about her breaking into a male-dominated industry and her forging ahead despite financial difficulties. She let out a big sigh and thanked me that I didn't say it was because of her disability. I honestly didn't even think about the fact that she was in a wheelchair. We then had an enlightening conversation about "inspiration p*rn" which I didn't even know existed at that time! I hope you now have the support you need and are surrounded by people who love you for you.

@nbv6975
@nbv6975 9 күн бұрын
I came here to say the exact same thing. Why is not ok to share a non-disabled child’s life on the internet without consent, but it’s ok to do that to a disabled child for the sake of “educating parents”? Disabled people and children and two groups notorious for being dehumanized and given little to no agency or rights, so it’s kind of insane to think disabled children are the exception to this issue, and not one of the most likely victims with the least agency given to them. Parents and their needs are not the center of this discussion, and even if they were, parents who exploit their disabled children are not people you should EVER get parenting advice from. Having watched a few when I was kid, family vloggers with disabled kids are honestly some of the most deeply vile of family vloggers out there. The parents treat their kids like a pet and center themselves and their emotional journey, and they show every single detail of their child’s life, from filming “meltdowns” (that feels like a really demeaning word to use but I can’t think of a less demeaning one) to telling an audience explicit details about bathroom topics. I remember I once saw this one woman vehemently defending putting her nonverbal daughter with Downs syndrome and autism in ABA therapy, acting like the comment she was responding to was “hate” and how dare someone question how she was raising her kid. But the comment she was responding to was from an adult with autism speaking from experience on how much ABA therapy is awful for people with autism. Family vloggers are all unethical but this particular kind are pretty much evil.

I think Pleasant Peasant Media/Momma Cusses/Gwenna does a beautiful job of sharing things about her family in a way that may be helpful for others, and opens up conversation. With her younger kids she doesn't show them on camera and reenacts situations playing the roles of her children instead of putting them on camera. Her older daughter sometimes makes appearances but she is old enough to consent and it always seems like stuff she wants to be included in, I don't think I've ever seen her in anything embarrassing.

Once again, while an awful thing that I wish no one has to face, the fact that not only were you able to finally open up to your partner (now spouse) and she did so in turn is incredibly moving. We all heal at different paces and ways. Speaking as a fellow survivor (who's also known many) I'm acutely aware of the fear you described and sometimes it 'reappears' long after we thought it was 'behind us' especially when we have a chance at forming/cementing a deep connection. What you described happening between the two of you was incredibly beautiful and intimate. I am raising a disabled child. They are now 16 and they don't like being known as "the disabled child." They don't want to be inspiration porn. They are so much more than their disability and they want people to see that. As a small child they didn't realise that was happening (not as a family vlogger) and it hurt to realise it. There are ways to share about a condition and its struggles and parenting without showing your child or exploiting them.

The same goes for child actors then I would assume? So all the movies with under 18 actors and actressess should be removed, and people who view these movies aren't much better than those who view child corn, it's just a different more normalized voyeuristic violation of consent.

I also recently looked at baby photos of me from the 90’s, and looking at those photos brought back great memories I got to share with my mom. My friends with kids *might* share the ‘official’ pictures of their children - like the school photo or something, but the rest of the time, if they share a cute photo, the kids faces are blurred or emoji’d out. Privately, and because we live around the globe, I get sent pics, but we all agree we NEVER share the kids pics publicly. EVER.

I knew a couple who are very into cosplay, and included their kid in their hobby. Sometimes they include their kid in photos and clips, which are mostly meet-and-greets with character actors, or huge group photos at conventions. The kid is rarely the focus of the video clips; the focus was more on the costumes, events, and the adult character actors' reactions. The kid mostly "went along with whatever" when they were younger, but when they got older, their parents set a rule where were all the kid has to say is "no" and the camera is gone, and any recorded or posted content is gone, no questions asked- even old photos and clips are removed if the kid wants them gone. I honestly and genuinely believe if that kid asked for it, the whole account would be wiped clean to the best of the parents' abilities. Obviously it's not a perfect situation, but giving the kid the control and the right to decide is something I respect a lot.

In the words of Ringo Starr, "I love kids; I used to be one." You don't have to be a parent to care about the safety of children. When I went trick-or-treating with my bros kids, I asked before taking pics, made assurances that they wouldn't be posted anywhere, and even asked permission before showing my coworkers. Even if my bro and SIL posted pics (they usually don't), it's not getting posted by me. My nieces and nephews can't consent to their likeness being online.

Shari is INCREDIBLY brave. Who knows hiw many people she's helped/will help with her testimony. Using trips and experiences as bribes is especially horrific when a child is pressured to do or say something very personal on camera and they feel they have no choice. Suppose a young girl is promised a family trip to Disneyland if she talks about her period. If she refuses, then her siblings miss out on a trip to Disney, and they'll blame her. She won't feel that she really has a choice. 😞

I may be misunderstanding what I've been reading about the law, but it's 10-15% has to be put into a savings account for when they turn 18, but the total compensation is supposed to be greater than that. However, only 10-15% must go to savings, while additional compensation can go directly to the child (which still problematic if you ask me.) I just wanted to clarify that this isn't what is expected to be fair compensation, just this is the portion that has to go to their future selves so they have something to start their adult lives.

I hope this also kicks off a conversation about CA. I see far too many videos and posts online about “my kid didn’t like dinner so now they’re not allowed to eat until breakfast / until they finish dinner”. That’s called CA! It’s not a punishment to withhold food, it’s CA! And even if it’s done in a non-abusive way, it’s going to cause a seriously unhealthy relationship with food and mealtimes (speaking from experience)

Same. There's this thing in dogs called "food aggression", and it's caused by them having food denied while they're puppies (either intentionally or just by the situation they're in, you see it in strays a lot). Where it isn't documented as well is in humans. My siblings and I all have what in dogs would be labeled as food aggression, we get irrationally angry if someone even jokes about taking our food. Why? Because we grew up with food insecurity, and food was used as a punishment. Now we all have huge issues around food.

That's not necessarily a punishment. That's just boundaries, if it's done kindly. You make dinner, have at least one thing that the child likes/doesn't mind, and they can choose how much of each part of dinner they want to eat. And if it's very little, the parents don't make a big fuss. There's no punishment. The child is requested to be polite (like "no thanks, I'd rather not" instead of "gross!") but that's it. And breakfast is the next meal. You don't want to end up in a mom=short order cook situation. Kids go through picky stages and it's fine not to cater to that. Probably they're not in a growth spurt.

So I liked "maybe even us" in your intro, and didn't get used to you saying the other one when you changed it. My reaction here when you said "maybe even us" made me go, "Yay, you said it RIGHT." lol. SO all that said, you can say either one you want, and I promise I won't be mad, but that's my insight. I was one of the fans who was sad when Rhett and Link tried to stop saying "Let's talk about that" in their intro on Good Mythical Morning.

I actually used to follow a family vlog when I was younger. I stumbled across a couple’s vlogs about their infertility journey. Happily, they got pregnant, and vlogged their pregnancy. And then their child. And then their second child. Shortly after their first child was born, the husband quit his job and they vlogged full time. It was such a gradual process, I don’t think they set out to be family vloggers. It started as them discussing infertility and then snowballed. And their content always seemed sweet and lighthearted, and they seemed like such a wonderful family. But those kids were always on camera. They would sometimes even pick the camera up and pretend to vlog as toddlers. Turns out the mom in this family is actually Ruby’s sister. I doubt (and hope) she’s as far along the crazy train as Ruby, but when your family income is derived from filming your kids for content, it’s easy to slide down a slippery slope.
