well, anatomy is important, but not that much for figure drawing, you don't need know names of muscles or their origin/insertion points to draw a sexy lady, but if you want to construct believable humanoid robot who has bionic muscles visible etc you must know that for example biceps connects to scapula not humerus otherwise you will never succeed to make immersive designs of creatures, droids etc even animals share similar body structure. Maybe it shouldn't be priority, but at some point you have to learn them anyway and it's not that hard, I spend 2 weeks just for anatomy and I may not know all names, but I know where what goes and thats enough to draw muscle maps from my imagination and on that I can build other things like simplified forms, flow, gestures etc like this video teaches :)

This comment coming from someone who is having a lot of difficulty with anatomy. I think it would help a lot if you've already got the basics down. Through repetition you already know intuitively how big these shapes should be, and how far apart they need to be. I think it's great material for learning to draw without reference. I feel like a video on anatomy in relation to itself would be really helpful. Like how you said the pectorals connect to the deltoid and kind of follow it along. Other things like measurements of how tall/wide the chest would be compared to the head and how far away it should be for the neck. How far the pelvis should be from the ribcage, or how long the arms should be when you're doing a drawing that isn't straight up and down where you could easily compare it to the hips. How long the legs should be and the relationship with the kneecap. How big feet and hands should be on their respective legs and arms. Either way, I'm going to download this. Hopefully it will inspire some progress. :) Thanks.

Drawing figures is based on realism mixed with personal style. I would look at models and try to find the relations to sizes. I for instant only like the upper torso to be slightly bigger than the head but realistically its about a head and a half to 2 heads wide, It can also be bigger.
@Keszifolti7 жыл бұрын
I've been listening to you, and it seems you pretty much know your anatomy. I tried to be lazy about the anatomy too, but realized pretty fast, that you can only simplify something, when you know exactly, what to simplify :) soo there is no short way around on anatomy in my opinion

I've been watching proko's series on anatomy, and I'm like... I don't need to be able to do surgery, I just want to draw convincing characters. Spare me the technobabble and give me the broad strokes. Unless I'm drawing realistic skeletons - for which I would be using references anyway - I don't need to know how many ribs there are, how many vertebrae there are, I just need to know general shape and relative location

I love how he simplifies it into parts, specially with all the muscles, because a lot of artist just say 'make this shape and then put some circles here then define it out' Or something like that, but he uses the muscles to give a more defined and correct shape that's easier to follow and draw, like an example being the Deltoid muscle being connected to the bicep, it gives the arm the correct shoulder look and curved muscle look instead of making it look like a rectangle ^^

Sycra, thank you. I've been watching your videos this whole weekend, studying what you've been saying, and I find your video on iterative drawing to be incredibly insightful for someone like me who is an analytic thinker. Most of these videos seem to say two things, "Go get your mileage, AKA go draw" and "Once you have your mileage, here is a constructive way to apply it." I have been drawing for years, I've learned anatomy, I've gone to figure drawing classes, and I still struggle sometimes with the figure. I know that doesn't go away (we as artists will always struggle) but these videos have really helped me have the proper "mindset". I feel like I'm learning how to properly channel and structure what I've leaned from my years of drawing. So again, thank you. You are an incredibly insightful artist. Thank you for your hard work and for putting in the time to make and post these tutorials. Artists like myself are grateful for people like you being around.

Your approach to anatomy is extremely important because you simplify the basic musculature and how the parts relate and from where they originate and meld into the form. After learning from your simplistic forms it is then possible to see these things when looking at the form of others. Then when looking at an in depth anatomy book one will not be lost but can continue to understand relationships of form. Teaching others how to see and then draw is such an important endeavor, artist can sometimes be the most elevated spirits because they are the ultimate witnesses. You are uplifting mankind. Thank you! #jerrybaba, nyc

Thanks Sycra, very handy and elucidatory explanation. I saw a video of Glen Orbik where he sayd a phrase that Fred Fixler used to say: "Learn anatomy and forget it, you don´t want to go that far" - But Glen sayd that his point was - Learn anatomy so that you can spend your time on your design. Glen always talk about "construction" - which I undestand it more like a Simplified version of anatomy - archtecture, the planes... But I guess Sycra, that you created your own construction because you have studied slowly and deeply the anatomy - Your construction is a solid, simply and eficient understand of anatomy - so your drawings makes sense... I did not studied anatomy yet. It´s really teditious, so I started and left it... Ehehehe!! But I do GD everyday last 2 years.And when I am going to do a complete drawing - rendered, I feel that lacks something. As you sayd in the end of the video, some muscles goes on top of the other... This is a tricky thing that I think only the anatomy gives and this is the thing That I feel I need to now, the thing that lacks me... Some things are hidden by the skin that covers and masks it... Just the anatomy studies reveals it... So I think maybe anatomy is a necessary evil! LOL! Hugs!!

I think the thing a lot of people have trouble with, myself included, is that we can visualize the shapes. But when we go to draw them, we can't produce those shapes. For example, when you were explaining how the neck combines to the collar bone, I can totally visualize that. But when I go to draw it myself, I get stuck on how far the collar bone should be from the chin. I end up drawing and erasing a dozen times until I find the natural place that the collar bone should be. But if I'm having to redraw the neck over and over to find the collar bone, than it kind of kills the method you're trying to teach. I still end up having to measure before I draw, because as you said, I don't have the years of memory that allows me to just know where the collar bone should be. But I'm going to try learning from your model now. Since I think I've gone about as far as I can with the traditional wire skeleton. And like you said, going full Da Vinci and learning to draw every muscle in detail isn't going to be helpful when I'm trying to recall general shapes. Especially with quick storyboard work which is my goal.

@merlinknowsnothing8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Sycra, this is a great video! One of my favorite art things is seeing other artists break down their own understanding of the figure. Have any of you guys read Michael Hampton's "Figure Drawing: Design and Invention"? This came to mind because Sycra's said in the past that he hasn't found an anatomy book that he really likes yet, and Hampton's book seems like a similar concept to Sycra's model (albeit a bit more complex, for better or for worse). Hampton focuses on methods of understanding the figure as a complex and fluid mechanism, and part of his method involves simplifying anatomical pieces. Each simplified piece has it's own unique purpose that supports a greater whole, and can be thought of in terms of gesture, shape and form. Hampton also discusses his own definition of "gesture" and his preferred gesture drawing process, which utilizes the design fundamentals in a supportive, rather than compromising way. The one thing I'd say about this book is that while it's a great entry point if you're just getting started, you'll probably take more from it if you read it after you've already learned a bit about both anatomy and perspective. I went into this book with a bit of sketchy anatomy knowledge, and it's made his example drawings jump out at me with "OH, so THAT'S how that's supposed to work!" Understanding perspective will make it a lot easier to put Hampton's philosophy into practical use. By the way, if you want to check out Hampton's figure drawing work, just look him up on google images.

The pelvis is attached via the spine. The oblique muscles attach at the sides, abdominal muscles at the front, and lower back muscles (sacrospinalis, lats) at the back. It also pays to understand the form of the bones before you go adding muscles. Proko has a pretty extensive library on human anatomy here on KZbin.
