A beautiful song that Kate recorded and released as the b-side of the 12'' version of "Cloudbusting". The song is a traditional Irish folk song with new lyrics written by her brother John Carder Bush.
Lyrics:
When rainy nights are soft with tears,
And Autumn leaves are falling,
I hear his voice on tumbling waves
And no one there to hold me.
At evening's fall he watched me walk.
His heart was mine.
But my love was young, and felt
The world was not cruel, but kind.
Where Lagan's light fell on the hour,
I saw him far below me--
Just as the morning calmed the storm--
With no one there to hold him.
My loves have come, my loves have gone,
And nothing's left to warm me,
Save for a voice on the traveling wind,
And the glimpse of a face at morning.

Now I know why this song captures my soul. Thank you. She is real. It's not a sentimental or romantic muse, but a deeper earth muse. Not human. Space and time can't hold her and those who know her, well, they know her.

Her mother was Irish (I only just found out) and Kate says she was very influenced by old or traditional folk songs the sort of music her Irish mother would have danced to and played. I found out a few others I was unaware were of Irish descent getting here, Dusty Springfield, who also sings this and Emily Bronte who of course wrote Wuthering Heights, and finally Mike Oldfield who I stumbled across along the way here lol. Snead O Conner sings this too. Not sure which I prefer yet lol.

Kate certainly embraced her Irishness. Her mum was born somewhere maybe in the west of Ireland. She was called Hannah. And an Irish dancing champion. Kind of explains Kate’s incredible ability to dance in every which way. She was able to be quite astute in the horrendous music business. Because her family protected her. Her older brother Paddy was a musician and seemed to be v protective of his lovely younger sibling. Kate wrote Wuthering Heights as a teenager. It’s astonishing to me that Emily Bronte, whose father came from County Down, and who by all observations, was probably a virgin, how Emily could write, probably one of the most tragic passionate love stories ever written. Kate and Emily I believe share a birth date. It may be 31/7. I’ve been on the Bronte Trail in County Down. Where Emily’s father taught, gave his first sermon, a copy of Charlotte’s wedding dress, etc etc.

Hmm, she signs it better than Lynn Hilary, but Lynn's voice is more pleasant. Not that Lynn's renditions is at all bad or Kate's voice is not up to snuff. Just drawing a comparison based on one of my favorite acapella celtic song. Of course Lynn is Irish and Kate is English, so there may be an irony there.

It's about the magic of Ireland. Where in the olden days (and some still today!) believed in fairies and creatures called "Lenanshee" in English phonetics, but the Irish know as the "Leanan Sídhe" which are beautiful enchantress fairy mistresses who inspire poets and artists and lovers with their unearthly beauty and loveliness and grace. "In Celtic folklore, the leannán sí ("Fairy-Lover"[1]; Scottish Gaelic: leannan sìth, Manx: lhiannan shee; [lʲan̴̪-an ˈʃiː]) is a beautiful woman of the Aos Sí ("people of the barrows") who takes a human lover. Lovers of the leannán sídhe are said to live brief, though highly inspired, lives. The name comes from the Gaelic words for a sweetheart, lover, or concubine and the term for a tumulus or burial mound.[citation needed] The leannán sídhe is generally depicted as a beautiful muse who offers inspiration to an artist in exchange for their love and devotion; however, this frequently results in madness for the artist, as well as premature death. W. B. Yeats popularized a slightly different perspective on these spirits with emphasis on their vampiric tendencies:[2] The Leanhaun Shee (fairy mistress) seeks the love of mortals. If they refuse, she must be their slave; if they consent, they are hers, and can only escape by finding another to take their place. The fairy lives on their life, and they waste away. Death is no escape from her. She is the Gaelic muse, for she gives inspiration to those she persecutes. The Gaelic poets die young, for she is restless, and will not let them remain long on earth-this malignant phantom. Contents [hide] 1 Literature and Pop Culture 2 See also 3 References 4 Further reading Literature and Pop Culture[edit] A number of traditional Irish tales feature characters that appear to draw from the leannán sídhe legend for inspiration. These include Katharine Mary Briggs's "The Fairy Follower" in Folktales of England, the story "Oisin in the Land of Youth" in Ancient Irish Tales, "The Dream of Angus" in Augusta, Lady Gregory's Cuchulain of Muirthemne. The old Irish song "My Lagan Love" uses her as a metaphor for consuming love: "And like a love-sick lennan-shee/ She has my heart in thrall,/ Nor life I owe nor liberty/ For love is lord of all." The Irish band Unkindness Of Ravens released the song Leanan Sídhe in 2015 alongside an accompanying video further exploring the ancient myth.[3] The video was filmed in The Burren in County Clare and the Slieve Bloom Mountains in County Offaly, Ireland, as well as the Pollnagollum caves. Modern fantasy novels often include characters based on Irish mythology. Examples include The Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher, with a recurring character named Leanansidhe (or Lea for short) and "The Iron Fey Series", by Julie Kagawa.
