Thanks so much for posting this! I'm seriously considering the RS1221+ for my rack but the noise in the review videos bothered me. Seeing the performance of the Noctuas in cool mode, I'll pick up those when I do order the RS. Thanks again!.

Thanks for sharing! I had received a RS1221RP+ yesterday and returned it today (haha) due to the small dual PSU fans sounding like jet engines at all times. I was more confident in the single PSU version as there aren't two jet engine fans in the little hot swap PSU's, just the two rear fans. The RS1221+ I ordered should be here tomorrow and if I think that's even a little too loud i'll definitely order these fans. Much appreciated!

Looks like you’re enjoying this setup. I actually need to upgrade mine, which is running on about 7-8 years old (1513+) My volume crashed, which was actually my fault 😀 but I was able to go in an salvage the data not to mention the cloud backup I’ve got. Time to rebuild so I was looking at the 1821+ or one of these racks.

Hey Kevin! Yep, backups are key. I do like this NAS a lot and exactly what I wanted with it being in a rack far away from my office/studio. Of course if media encoding is the goal these amd powered NASs are not the best but they work for my needs. Thanks for checking it out!

I made such change in my DS1515 many years ago. I used Redux 80mm fans. I do have room with climat control (cabinet has thermostat set for 38 deg C) 5 HDD (first 4TB WD RED Now 8TB Seagate Iron wolf) Temperature of CPU 56 deg C and HDD 37 deg. I never faced any issue due to temperature. Everything quiet and the laudest are HDD (7200 RPM). Basiclly Nactua makes the best fans in the world. NF-A8 are good but they are optimized for high air preasure (mm H2O) where you need make presure to push air through narrow fins. Redux NF-R8 are more optimized for air flow so in the same air flow fan can rotate slower. Both has same noise ratio but Redux in my opinion has better culture of work. On the end both will make same job and fan change is must for Synology whic works close to your ears.

The only thing I would recommend is that you get a fan splitter and just put a small quiet fan on top of the CPU (use the half of the splitter that lacks yellow cable) as with most nas’s they don’t have directed covers to make the airflow run over them actively

Hello, really interesting video. I am interested in this Synology NAS. May I ask you about the noise when the disks are running? I have a 918+ and it has the “classic” metallic and really annoying noise due to the surface contact between the disk and the NAS cage.

So the PSU noise is neglectable ? Is that true for all Synology units ? I might get one soon and sound would be a problem.

The rack units are very noisy because they are supposed to be in a datacenter. The desktop units are pretty quiet.

@@JerrySchulze but how is the power supply fan noise vs the initial or Noctua fans ? Is the PSU relatively quiet ? Thanks.
@TheYamakasi0072 жыл бұрын
@@adrianTNT PSU in this model is build in and has much higher culture than RP version (redundant power). RP i louder like hell, first because it has hot-swap 300W PSU second fans are tiny and need to move a lot of heat. RP version is designated to DataCenters to reduce single pint of failure. Ordinary version (one PSU) is build in and it is simmilar if not identical to DS (desktop) version. They look almost idetical to SFX PSU format.

Hey Jerry, Looks like this worked out well for you, my only concern is the possibility of voiding the warranty on a $1,700 CAD machine. Do you have any more info on whether this would void the warranty?
@JerrySchulze3 жыл бұрын
I am sure if you called and asked they would say it voids warranty. I am not sure how they would know if you ever had to send it in for repair swap the fans back in. Or if you have issues swap the fans before troubleshooting. But I make no guarantees that quieter fans will not have an affect on your warranty.

Changing the case fan wont void your warranty either (but change CPU cooling will void warranty) so it is not a big deal.
