Spider-Man comics have been in shambles for over a decade, and it's not hard to see why. From Dan Slott to Zeb Wells, it seems Marvel can't escape the constant backpedaling and infantilizing of everyone's favorite webhead. Of course we all know why this is, most of the character's development and history are locked behind One More Day, so it's extremely disheartening to see this new run from Zeb Wells seemingly ignore Nick Spencer's attempts to undo it in favor of more Brand New Day sludge. Peter Parker just isn't the character he used to be, and neither is Ben Reilly... But in JMD's new Ben Reilly Spider-Man: The Humanity Agenda, we get a glimpse into what a wallcrawler with real tangible history and a writer who loves the character can be: Amazing.

That's the problem with Marvel's mainline comic book canon and DC's mainline comic book canon; they refuse to have the characters continue to consistently age and they keep them stagnant, rather than doing what they should do, which is not keep the characters stagnant, not use a floating timeline, and follow the characters through to their eventual endpoints.

I'll be honest... every time Peter has talked about "Power and responsibility" post OMD? Has made my skin crawl. There was honestly more at stake than the marriage with OMD, there marriage is a smoke screen... because the thing of it is.... One More Day was Peter Parker's ultimate challenge. He was faced with an impossible choice, and he made the WRONG choice... and it was defended by Quesada as "Well it's what ANYONE would do!" Which is the problem... it IS what anyone would do.... Spider-Man is meant to be better than that. Insomniac's Spider-Man was put into the same kind of situation... and made the right choice because he put OTHER PEOPLE ahead of his own wants.... Peter Parker allowing the deal with Mephisto to happen.... is the most selfish thing I have ever witnessed a superhero do. And I could have gotten over it... if he made up for it, went back and UNDID IT, realized he made a mistake and fought tooth and nail to undo it.... but no... because Marvel doesn't SEE IT like a mistake.... and because of that? The only REAL Spider-Man we've had since OMD? Is Miles Morales.

I’m on board with Norman being good now BUT and this is a huge but, have him reestablish Oscorp somewhere other than New York where he’s caused so much damage. If we had a competent writing team, they’d realize that Sin-Eater removing Norman’s sins also left him EXTREMELY remorseful (as seen in the Spencer run!) and he’d leave the city he’s menaced for so long. So fun fact, back in the 90's it was teased that MJ gave birth and Norman took the baby away and shipped her off to Europe while faking a miscarriage to hurt Peter. That means there's a like five(?) year old Spider girl somewhere in Europe the writers haven't used. Also if you think what they've done to Peter and Ben is bad at least they're still in the books, Kaine's just been Thanos snapped for no reason. It really bothers me because heroes who have been called as "unrelatable" and "not interesting"-heroes who would have no chance in having a regular family life-heroes like superman and the flash have not only evolved past their regular setting but also evolved into having a family and becoming a father-Wally, especially. It is baffling because Wally has a lot of similarities with Peter-both of them started out as teenagers who idolized their uncles who took them in; they got powers, were initially cocky for a period of time, had multiple flings and hung out with other heroes. Both of them stepped up their game in terms of power and responsibility after their uncles died. However, while Wally's growth has been a slow and steady meteoric rise through which he even surpassed his mentor such that even after Barry was brought back by Geoff Johns, people still demanded Wally's return and his return was the main selling point of rebirth. Wally even went through several of Peter's phases-becoming a rich guy who would eventually lose all of it, having a public secret identity which gets wiped out following an accident of a loved one, the temptation by the devil to give up his love and even losing his kids; yet, while Wally grew from all his stories and is now a father...Peter is stuck in a cycle of stupid decisions over and over. The writers of spider-man seem to have this horrible idea which demeans the readers by saying that people can relate to spiderman only if he is a loser feeling sorry for himself all the time and not showing any growth at all.

I always really liked the Sensational suit, maybe even a little better than the official Scarlet Spider suit that everyone associates him with. I haven’t really read his comic books before, it feels like such a tangled web that it would be near impossible, but I do really enjoy his character and look. The darker take on the Peter story that’s edgy and 90’s allows for a really nice contrast to Peter’s which happens to be tragic but full of light. Ben seems to have no light and is striving to make his own and it just makes his character so special and different. I think he needs a big screen adaptation or television adaptation on a much grander scale than the one episode he was in during the 90’s. I’m sad to see that Marvel editorial is sorta pissing his character away because after the clone saga he doesn’t have a real place anymore. He was the second Spider-Man but after he was a little more forgotten that became the likes of Miguel O’ Hara and even later with Miles. Don’t get me wrong both of these characters are amazing, but Ben also deserves a place in the “Next Generation of Spider-Man” that isn’t just an alternate suit or a smaller comic line that sorta dies out at some point. It would be fascinating to see another reset for Spider-Man akin to the Ultimate comics which covers Peter and sprouts off into Ben and Miles, maybe even Kaine and Miguel along with whatever other Spider-People. It would be fascinating to see how Ben and Miles get along especially since they’re both their own characters but both are Spider-Man’s successors. It could be fun and have a lot of potential.

I totally get what you’re saying, and trust me, thematically you’re not wrong. It's more or less Wells' current run just sucks. At least Dan Slott knew how to set stuff up and progress somewhat with horizon labs. I think the problem is mostly editorial as they wanted to get rid of the marriage for years(and brought back Ben to say the married Peter Parker was the imposter, which understandably upset a lot of people back when that plot was relevant). I liked Spencer's run but it felt unfocused when it came to kindred and retconning useless stuff like Sliver Sable, taking away Norman sins, and Sins Past instead of just getting OMD out. Wells' spiderman has to do stupid stuff like bury his costume in the middle of a explosion and run around Pennsylvania in his underwear for no reason. I like Ben Reilly the humanity agenda is good don't get me wrong but can you use some more examples for your analytic videos. Humanity Agenda is in the same vain as Peter David's symbiote spiderman; stories written after the respective eras they are set/shoved in and kind of banking on nostalgia, imo. Ben has been dragged through the mud as much as Peter as this point. I can say the Ultimate Peter Parker is better than both mainline Peter/Ben since Ultimat Peter for holding his doc conners accountable for creating carnage, taking in Johnny storm and iceman, helping his clone find self acceptance and freedom, saving civilians when NYC got flood and almost drowning because of it, and sacrificing his own wellbeing to protect his family and friends to the bitter end.

I know i said it last time but i'm more than happy to say it again. In Spider-Verse (2014) it was proven that Ben is a better Spider-Man than Peter. What Marvel has allowed to be done to Peter Parker for the majority of my entire life is a travesty, and they need to boot all of the people responsible for these decisions and get talented people wbo love and care about this character (though to be honest, the same could be said about Marvel Comics and all of its characters for that matter, considering the abysmal state of the now-nonecistent publisher since 2016). If they were gonna let Spencer do what he was doing in the first place, they should've let him go all the way and stick with it. Literally everybody likes a mature Peter Parker, and keeping him in this stunted state of being kinda makes Miles Morales redundant (more than he kind of already is). He already exists to be the kid spider hero. They don't have to make him a broken down middle aged man, but Peter Parker is about 30, give or take a year. Not everybody has all of the essentials of life figured out and squared away by then in this day and age, and Peter certainly doesn't have to, but it's not too hard of an ask for him to be happily married to Mary Jane, and settling into a steady gig he knows he's good at and one that can afford his alter ego's lifestyle. Being a high school teacher and a scientist at Horizon Labs were his best and most fitting positions. Why not try to combine the two and make him a new university professor and research scientist at Empire State University. It takes him back to his old stomping grounds when the character really hit his stride for the old heads who want the nostalgia, it drives the character forward in a way that totally works for the character in a way that gives him the flexibility to do his work, be Spider-Man, and be or do whatever else he's gonna do when he's not teaching or working on some research project. He doesn't even need a kid like Mayday along the way just yet, but even solidifying that as canon would be a big deal. Then, maybe invest in making Peter an actual mentor to Miles. These are all things just about everyone but Marvel writers and editors want for some godforesaken reason because apparently they don't like money and success. That would mean giving what few readers they even have left what they want, and we just can't have that, now can we?

Peter is a great heroe, spencer run show he can be a good heroe with villains like he did with boomerang. Peter is "The spider-man" and I know he suck un current comics but its not really his fault as a character we all know since OMD Peter hasn't had so many good stories and that is fault of the editorial.

I hope Across The Spider-Verse, the MCU and Insomniac Spider-Man force Marvel to let Peter grow up because if there is one thing Marvel loves to do, it's brand synergy

Why would it? They only change things that are more popular than the comic version That doesn't apply to stuff that's already very popular

@@ryice944 Yeah it does, look at Miles, after Spider-Verse came out, he is a artist in the books, and Prowler wasn't an ass, They will do it to popular things, or with Thor, he lost his hammer when Ragnarök came out

I will fully admit I'm biased due to being a Venom (comic) fan instead of a Spider-Man fan but I have to disagree with Ben being the more compassionate hero. Eddie did not harm MJ or May or kill anyone Peter loved and at this point has made his transition into a anti-hero legimately. Despite this Ben made it his mission to antagonize Venom because apparently the "real" Spider-Man would've of never let Venom go or form a truce. Peter despite holding a grudge way past the point that both Eddie and the symbiote had forgiven him a long time ago, which Flash of all people had to call him out on, treated Venom far better than Ben ever has. And don't get me started on what Chasm did to Eddie in Dark Web. I do agree that Ben aside from that Ben does have the better track record as a hero though. Ben never sold his marriage and also basically his own daughter to Mephisto, supported the superhero equivalent of the MRA and other horrible things Peter has done and the things Ben has done can be attributed to not having control over himself in one way or another.

Is Brand new Day really bad? I'm kinda debating on getting the collection later in the year when vol 1's omni comes out, but i keep hearing mixed things. Is it as bad as OMD? or is it kinda mired by having come after it, while being good in it's own right if that's ignored? 🤔
@817mborja Жыл бұрын
It's readable if you read it after putting a couple months distance between BND and everything that came before it. Reading it back to back right after Strazynski to OMD always just makes me sad and angry.

If that is all true then Ben is better Peter was a great hero but to turn him in to a sad rip off just to get money is retarted to be completely honest Peter needs to be put to rest not dead but happily ever ever after and a new Spider-Man must rise miles or Ben or some one new one that can take on the burden of putting everyone above himself if been is shown to do that then yes he is way better

No Spider-Man isn’t a bad guy but Marvel is the main bad guy here considering how they’re constantly trying to delude us to thinking that Spider-Man is bad when he really isn’t but allowing Peter to do the deal with Mephisto is one of the worst and most unforgiving shits that Marvel has ever done I mean hell OMD is the whole reason why I gave up on modern Spider-Man comics because we got the chief editor Nick Lowe who loves nothing more but to just destroy Spider-Man and also disrespecting Stan Lee’s creations in the process. If Marvel can’t understand that we want OMD to be undone then I’m sad to say that I be sticking with the golden era of Spider-Man where Spider-Man is still based and doesn’t sell his soul to the fucking devil and in my opinion OMD Spider-Man beyond and dark web are just completely irrelevant they never happened at all

I don’t get it, they want spider-man to be relatable but who is this supposed to be relatable to? Most of the fans that grew up with Peter are full on adults who probably have their own families. Younger fans let’s be honest most likely don’t read. It might just be me but someone in their mid 30’s thats acts like a freshman in high school isn’t relatable and dare I say it’s kinda cringe. And if marvel editorial thinks a miserable jobless broke 30 year old man child is what’s relatable to their audience, then they clearly don’t think highly of us. 🤦🏿♂️ let Peter be happy, let him grow and have a family until then I’m probably gonna stick with Miles comics.
