100% I am 81 and 7 generations of my people have walked this land..starved, toiled themselves into early graves developing it. For 134 years Maori and early settlers lived together, worked side by side, socialised, loved each other and intermarried - to prove this look at all the intermarriages between our people with Maori today carrying more settler blood often than Maori. When in 1974 the then Labour government (always a very divisive and damaging government) along with radical activists of the day fiddled with the treaty and it's meaning... since then it is has been down hill. We are a small cash strapped country and so much pressure is put on the poor tax payer to accommodate all the greed and demands of the activists. Seymour's bill was not touching the treaty but including all the citizens who work this land and calling them equal - Maori refused to be classed as equal and shame on them. Most genuine Maori (including my family and friends) think like you do... they are many but keep their heads down and just get on with their work and their lives. Winston is right he says the old treaty had no principles (1974 Labour fiddling) and he would like to see these gone... this would see the end of the greedy gravy train Elite and stop a lot of this racial tension which is happening because now the majority have had enough and they are pushing back.

There are many examples of this within Maori families, where the messages handed down through generations are those just mentioned and NOT the "we are victims" mentality. These Maori people excel and contribute to the wider country AND their own people. If some Maori can do it, then why can't the others - this applies to any individual. Classical "outcome-ism". Justice does NOT arraign or prosecute criminals (maori or otherwise) .. the Police do this according to the laws laid down by Parliament and their enforcement of these laws. Ferris wants some kind of "targets" or "quotas". What does he mean? Justice provides the court room and deals with the incarceration, if determined by a judge. It is like saying that the "cure" for maori health issues is simply to stop treating cases once the quota is met?!? The treating doctor does not cause the disease. Ferris is confused by cause and effect. Takuta Ferris seems to be a bit of an idiot ... but maybe he is the victim of a bad edit ... However, the simple solution to the problem is for Maori to stop committing crimes (as mentioned in the chat). How does Ferris propose achieving this? (No wait ... I would expect some solution from Te Pati Maori to be even stupider than his suggestion on quotas for crime. Does he think that Maori over representation in gangs has no relationship to an over representation in criminal charges? Forget I asked the question ... I am sure the TPM answer involves spending more money making Maori criminals feel good about the crimes they commit or that Maori criminality is part of honouring the Treaty.)

He is making the implication that police are racist. He says that as if it is a proven fact. I suppose he thinks the justice system is too. The answer comes back, and there are a few succinct words that Takuta probably missed - 'the justice system is a lag indicator rather than a lead indicator'. The answer is further defined. Then, Takuta asks, 'do you have a dedicated Māori policy?' He didn't hear a word. It went all over his head. He thinks the justice system and police are the cause! What an ignorant fool.

If so what is the evidence of this. Or are these actually just people who are breaking laws, committing crime that attracts a jail sentence, who also happen to be Māori? If it’s the former, then why are there plenty of Māori who seem to be doing well in life (like himself), getting on and not attracting the attention of the law and ending up in jail? What the secret for that cohort? Surely they are also at risk of ending up in jail for no reason? Is it really just the nasty biased “system” targeting Māori?

Its not Justice, Corrections, or Police job to reduce offending its the responsibility of the whānau they are born into! I thought this guy was educated?

Is Ferris really that thick? What are Maori doing to stop their own people ending up in the justice system? Always someone else's problem

Why can't Takuta learn to speak properly..? Politicans must be articulate, NOT affected by smoking mushrooms

get off your ass ferris and teach your people not to get involved in criminal activities, if you can get that wright you will see the difference.

Maybe he wants to go back when there were no police around, and big Maori tribes just decimated smaller ones. If there were no Pakeha in Aotearoa, then ALL the people in jail would be Maori. The next problem is what if we just all identify as Maori? Problem solved for Mr Ferris.

Boot camps appeared to be targeted at young maori to avoid future crime, and they were decried by TPM and others on the left.

What performance measures do Māori Themselves have to reduce their high rate of incarceration?? The lack of self responsibility is astounding.

To avoid jail, all citizens, including Maori should not commit crimes, earn honest livings, try to make the most of their education, aspire to be a law abiding citizen, don't look upon jail as a lifestyle option, and don't follow relatives to jail as an acceptable option.

How about taking responsibility for bringing up your children with clear boundaries and values?? Stop putting the blame on everyone else. Good targets for all parents, Maori included, would be to make sure your children leave school with a basic qualification (NCEA level 2), then going on to further education or a job which trains them for some skill. It is pointless to have any sort of goal to lower the Maori prison population, if Maori are unwilling to seriously address how they are raising their children.

Ferris is a dreamer he hasn’t a clue what to ask or say,he should ask Māori why they are over represented for a start not the court and I get the feeling that the court is influenced by these people, you can’t create a special law, court for just one race, just think this subject has been talked about for years so nothing will change with gatherings like this.

I think the soft on crime approach hasn’t worked for majority of New Zealanders so we should see an increase in these numbers if this parliament is acting for all New Zealanders, in turn protecting our vulnerable this includes Maori from these criminals pushing drugs, violent crime, thefts and the like.

Horse before the cart here. Surely Maori should be setting and achieving the reduction targets, the Justice Dept are not doing the crime last I heard. The only way the Justice Dept can drive figures down is by issuing wet bus tickets for crime, instead of penalties. No doubt this is what Takuta wants.

He's asking the wrong body/person ... they are there to manage criminals. Why are there so many criminals? Is he asking to re-define crime? So more victims are ok? What a small minded radical race based analysis... it's far more complicated.

I could be wrong but have the they considered reducing the criminal tendencies .... I'd say it would have a rather profound difference ... You would think that was the "how to stay out of prison 1o1" golden rule works .
