The guy is talking about "tackling the _boy_ crisis" and his conclusion is: "So, my feeling is we already know the answer to this. We already know what it feels like to support _women_, to love _women_, to want _them_ to succeed" (15:33). He seems very focused on the boys' issues, indeed. Also, it is very telling that he makes a joke about the rates of boys to girls at "risk for emotional immaturity" being only 2.5:1, commenting that this should be higher (at the same time dismissing the issue and insulting the boys), right before giving the statistics about suicides (1:41). In fact, he does it _in the middle_ of his presentation of the suicide data! Not that the fact that more boys kill themselves than girls should be taken, you know, seriously. Let's just mention it in passing while everyone is laughing and move on quickly. Fantastic. With no bias at all.

maybe because the literal crux of hegemonic masculinity studies is about the ultracategorizing of the woman as the incarnation of everything negative while men are completely emtpy concepts defined as being the opposite of women (thus a negative of a negative)? if you get that (mostly by reading more of the works on the subject than a extremely tightly timed presentation), youd see how crucial it is also good quote by cutting it straight in the middle and discarding the rest of the idea to drain the context of bringing that support towards women to men as well from it

They do that at my school I can prove it and actually have girls that have received 85’s on an assignment and a boy the same age same grade revived a 56. They both did all the problems right. They did all their problems correctly and both put their name and date on the paper but the female teacher continuously favorited the girls.

Lot of boys here in this thread that don't understand what it means to be a man. Lets just take _strength_ as one example. You will all agree that a man should have some measure of strength I hope? How much strength does it take for you to be afraid of people you don't like? Conversely, how much strength does it take to admit when you are wrong? Because a person will not admit they are wrong because they are *afraid* to. Now lets talk about compassion. How much strength does it take to ignore someone who may be weaker at something? Or even to talk bad about them because of their problem? Conversely, how much strength does it take to go out of your way to help someone? It is just a fact that more or less what you put out into the world is what you will get back. You may not see immediate results, but things do come back to you. If you are respectful to others, then you have drastically increased your chances of others respecting you too. I could give dozens of examples why it is in your own best interest to be compassionate, but I challenge you to figure it out for yourselves. Or to *logically* explain otherwise, if you are able.

When I was in school, not caring about academics wasn't a sign of my masculinity, no. Not caring about academics was simply me not being interested in the curriculum. If you're interested in what you're learning, you're going to want to engage more in the subject. Often times I had teachers who just jud the students read a few paragraphs and answer some questions, or work in group. I hated that! No real engagement. I prefered the teacher who always challenged us.... made us think.... wanted to know what we thought. I noticed my classmates always responded most to that type as well because we're all having a conversation as opposed to just memorizing a book.

i have adhd, if you are misdiagnosed with adhd and treated for it ( which most young boys are ) you develop an insensitivity to the dopamine released within the brain. this is a big problem seeing as dopamine is the reward or motivation drug / chemical that your brain releases when you do something you feel happy about or that you like to do, it makes you feel fulfilled. if you gain an insensitivity to this affect you will become unmotivated and less responsive to reward. misdiagnosing our boys has got to stop, taking a stimulant such as adderall or vivance can be extremely dangerous to those who don’t need it, if a boy had bipolar disorder ( a psychotic illness ) and takes vivance ( stimulant that often is shown to induce psychosis in misdiagnosed patients ) you can get a REALLY bad interaction of chemicals that may make a boy more violent physically. this doesn’t occur as often in women because most women don’t develop adhd they develop a calmer version of the disorder referred to as add and are thus less likely to be put on stimulants and if bipolar or autism actually ends up being their true diagnosis the stimulant was never given and therefore up to that point never had the chance to change the brain chemistry of the girl, unlike the boy who is almost 50% more likely to be misdiagnosed with adhd due to the way bipolar and autism show themselves more outwardly in men.

Many things you said here about that and other disorders are inaccurate. While you may understand these topics in that way, things you wrote are incorrect scientifically. Masculinity is not the issue. Your ability to be a leader that inspires cooperation and camaraderie is the issue. I had some good leaders in grade school which engendered me to cooperate and participate. But I also had teachers with no leadership, which led to a hectic and pack-mentality classroom. In fact, historically kids were always around people older than them, which taught them to listen to their elders and allotted elders to be leaders. Kids nowadays only need to achieve a pack mentality mindset in order to be accepted. That's the problem. That's why some traditions are important; it is comprised of successful habits of the established.

Hey here's how we should teach them to be good feminists so that appreciate women and that will fix the problem bla bla' Yes engendering a strong moral sense of parity of esteem on the terms of gender cultural background disability etc is very important and essential to maturing as a person but that in no way addresses the boy specific issues mentioned. It's just, kind of, shit victim-blaming. And that story he told at the end as an example of what he would share with his son of when he 'failed as a man' is totally the wrong sort of morality tale, it is expressly a 'shudda manned up' story and extremely counterproductive. 'So Dad you're saying that what you should have done in that instance was engage in a physical altercation with two people you were no match for'. Extremely conflicting narratives within this talk.

finally someone with at least a little bit of intelligence. Interesting point. But I think that depends on how you perceive and judge his statements and what yours already are. Manning up means being brave and putting your morals . into action. How and when is dependent on the individual and their situation. It has nothing to do with violence, but with inner strength. It might have ended in a fight and a beating. But it also might have ended in him encouraging others to also step in and win an argument. Or a few different scenarios. I think his bottom line is more the message that men are allowed to have feelings and express these. They can be manly by supporting and helping others and each other rather than bullying, eg. That is what equality is all about. Women are allowed to be tough and also be bread winners, and men are allowed to show their authentic inner self without losing their status of manly, which is being imposed on them by other men.

Wow, a video called "tackling the boy crisis" which dismisses the problem, talks about a bunch of unrelated women's issues, and then concludes that the problem is men. I have no idea how anyone can think they're tackling men's issues while being this fucking gynocentric. I think the real problem, that's even more fundamental than the issue of boys in education, is our cultural inability to see men and boys as subjects who need other's help. He spends a lot of time talking about how we condition boys to think of themselves as agents for the benefit of others, and then uses that to support his denial of boy's need for assistance, rather than recognising this as part of the problem, which I find to be incredibly misandrist and regressive.

It was certainly true in my last school (I'm a male teacher, moving to a girls' school), for boys' to be stupid was cool. The solution the speaker gave was one side of a larger problem, people in general are loosing their morality and parents are not taking care of their children. They're not even around for their children and they don't have a moral stance to teach their kids. All that sounds pretty negative but I do have hope for humanity.

I think this was a good talk, so I dont get why all the dislikes. After reading a few comments I realise what type of guys were watching, but the question that comes to mind is why are those guys watching? I cannot speak for anyone else but I watch these type of Ted Talks to get more insight of other peoples wisdom, but obviously that isn't what I see the main desire is by overlooking this audience.
