Several years ago I had pair of 10 minute introductory lessons in Wu style Tai Chi. It was very enjoyable and relaxing. Perhaps even better was that I slept like a baby after each lesson. I'm very impressed with Tai Chi.

i am also 17 and i practice my tai chi every day..... it is very relaxing for stress and it helps stretch your muscles for the start of the day. but i do agree with shadowsabere in that tai chi cannot be taught from a dvd only the rudamentaries can be shown through a screen, to truly experience tai chi you must seek a teacher.

yes. yes you can. you can easily learn basics and forms from videos. also, if you have some training in marital arts you can use videos to learn new techniques. use a partner and a mirror (or camera) to help. obviously you wont learn the same you would with a teacher but its still quite beneficial.

Breathe in twist left, exhale, left hand on your back palm out, right hand pointing left around your head. Alternate slowly 8 times. Right leg and left, lift leg point toes, circle entire leg 8 times. Breathe full in raise fall the arms breathe out do seated Tai Chi Part the Mane. Expect fast healing

@drpaullamtaichi and @iceblade05 I couldn't agree with you more Dr. Lam. I have noticed in life it's not about the fighting, it seems to be more about how you handle a situation, and deal with the actions you deal. I have been watching your videos on tai chi, and have been learning so much from you! I currently am training in Wing Chun, and believe that tai chi will help improve my martial art, and state of mind. Iceblade, learn to expand your knowledge of martial art

Most people today are training Tai Chi for relax and health. If you ask someone for Tai Chi he will tell you - " Ohh the relaxing sport ? " . The combat Tai Chi is a little bit forgotten and if you want to learn Tai Chi you CANT learn it alone because when you go on the street you wont fight versus the mirror, you will fight with different person, that will hit you and thats why you need a teacher, not a random videos in youtube.

strange that you're thinking about this. well i was just thinking about causality myself the for sometime (in a completely non-taoist sense), and I realized, that if you can describe everything in the body and the brain via physics, then no one in this world has choice, since everything was determined right from the big bang. Choice determines our future, but since no one has choice, then our choices are a product of our environment and our past. So, "take care of our health" is due to causality

Count calories and get your heart rate up several times a week! If you are really heavy and cannot run (and shouldn't run) you could try a walk/jog. Ive heard that you can trick your heart this way. Get your heart rate up and it will stay up there while you walk (break), then get it going again. Of course Im no doctor, they can tell you what you are able to do.

actually the reason people pronounce it "yoga" instead of "yog" is the same reason they pronounce "Rama" instead of "Ram". It has nothing to do with an English accent. It has to do with the pronunciation of Sanskrit. Western students/scholars of Indian forms of literature, religion, martial arts, etc have a Sanskrit bias. In Sanskrit it is actually pronounced, even by a Hindi speaker as "yoga" and "Rama" not as "Yog" and "Ram".

I am quite CONFUSED. There are so many Tai Chi versions, origins and practices. I am doing Tai Chi and it is nothing like this. I am gaining core strength, muscular strength and my legs and arms are stronger. All of my muscle groups are stronger. I am also gaining better balance and coordination and finally, a calmness overwhelms me. But it is nothing like this. I am quite CONFUSED.

@IlRezzonico Tai Chi IS Taoism. You become the Tao while performing and mastering the tai chi movements. It all represents balance, oneness, and mental stillness. Powerful stuff, they say tai chi masters can equip their bodies so well that some become immune to disease such as cancer and terminal illnesses, that's all folklore but it is one of the most powerful things you can do.

How does this compare with other styles of martial arts? I know and practise various styles but none of them are like this with the slow movements. I learn for defense not attack first and Tai chi was recomended to me because of that. Saying that I do have a slight temper (I'm a red head it happens) and do need to learn to calm down more.

Most practice Tai Chi to improve circulation and relaxation. That's why lots of old people do it. It might surprise the young imbeciles out there, but everybody's body decays as you age. In fact, that's what aging means. If you think you won't realize one day that time has flown by and you're old now, you're in for a shocking wake up call.
