Fourth year Med student here. Answering Geo's question about febrile seizures - Febrile seizures are the most common cause of seizure in kids however usually the onset of the seizure is within 24 hours of the onset of fever. The fever does not have to be high to trigger seizures in certain kids, just above 100.4. Since taika ‘s fevers have been a week apart from the seizures they are likely not related but it’s a very good observation and keep an eye out for future associations between fevers and seizures. Seizures are common in kids and often times they outgrow them but must get it worked up. The important thing about seizures is that we have to rule out any dangerous causes of the seizure such as any brain tumors, infection, metabolic abnormalities, since sometimes seizure can be a manifestation of a deeper underlying abnormality. Once those are ruled out rest assured these seizures are usually not life-threatening. Seizures themselves are usually not dangerous as long as you carry out the protocol Geo perfectly described in the podcast. EDIT: This is NOT MEDICAL ADVICE and I am just a STUDENT. This is just general medical information. Taika needs to see a doctor (sounds like he is heading that way) for the workup I described

@@cristinacarrion4723 No it sounds like you stopped reading. I am recommending exactly AGAINST that. I say you must work up the cause of the seizures and that is the most important. Nowhere did I say you should dismiss medical attention. Medical treatment with antiepileptics should be deferred to a medical professional and he should 100000% see a doctor for it for the proper workup. Whether he needs medication long term is up in the air. Like i said, some kids do outgrow seizures. Does not mean he should not seek medical attention. Why would I stigmitize life long medical treatment as someone that will be prescribing them? But its a discussion between the parents and the doctor. And like Geo said, she would prefer her son to not be on medication for life and that is totally understandable. You have misunderstood the point.

I think that there should be more awareness and conversation about this topic. As a guidance counselor at an elementary school, it’s essential to discuss such topics and train educators on warning signs just like with other conditions

I've had seizures since I was 13/14, and I'm 25 now. It's rough, and I hope Taika can grow out of it, but I want you guys to know that your kid will grow to love you guys. If he has seizures, his life will be different but there is still happiness. Currently on my road to drive by 2023

First aid/CPR classes are suuuuuuperrr important, definitely recommend at least one of you guys take a class every 2 years because information changes! Back in the 90’s everyone hammered in the idea of finger sweeping when someone is choking, I still hear that from parents of the kids I take care of

Just make sure you have them get all the vaccines. They dont cause any of this and in fact help prevent stuff like this. I get a flu shot every year and a covid booster every 3 months and have never had a seziure.

This episode made me remember when a regular doctor visit for my two year old son that I thought he was just whiny but wanted to be sure ended on him having leukemia, and remembering everything that went through our minds while we rushed him to get a transfusion and to confirm his diagnosis to the children’s hospital. He is on treatment now so he is good but is a scary time. The worst day of my life.

20 yrs ago when my son was 2 yrs old he had a really bad seizure. It was 4 or 5 days after a fever also. We ran all the tests possible but everything was inconclusive. I felt your pain and helplessness when listening to your story. My son is 22 years old and hasn't had a seizure since . I can feel the pain in you recollection of the events. When my son was just over one he had his first seizure and it was so scary. I felt useless holding his body as it went in and out of consciousness. He had never really cried as a baby and seeing him and feeling his body in so much distress to this day worst feeling I’ve experienced. Sending lots of good energy and love. Our love for our kids are so powerful. we would do anything to keep them safe. what sucks with this is as a parent, its not as simple as putting in corner protectors to tables and counters to protect them from getting hurt. its more internal that we can't really control. we feel almost helpless. but knowing both of you through social media, you'll be hella persistent with getting down to the root problem. i really hope this does not happen again to your family.

Poor taika . It’s tough listening to this with the amount of detail and emotion and not help cry a little. My little cousin had a seizure within a month of getting vaccinated (I forget for what) but she was just 12. And it never happened again. I really resonate when Bart said he was asssuming the bad of him before assuming something else. My sister had absent seizures. She got them in elementary school when two of her friends were holding her hands. She didn’t notice but she walked into a pole head first because her friends were grabbing her hands. My mom assumed she was ignoring her because her face would go blank and she would stare up. My mom would always yell at her because we thought she was ignoring my mom but we never thought it was seizures until she had another episode of her looking up and staring blank but this time she had a hot cup of maruchan spilling on her hands and she had no reaction. We found out she had absent seizures after awhile but we’re happy to say she hasn’t had an episode for years. This happened when she was 10 and lasted maybe 3 years and she’s 19 now and hasn’t had one since. I hope her story helps you guys ❤️

This is purely anecdotal but my sister in law’s daughter also suffers from seizures and I think it’s triggered by specific things in her diet (chocolate, soda, sweets). Doctors have performed brain scans and still can’t decisively diagnose her.

I can't imagine of going through that... I did had my son choke on food but I'm glad my partner was there with me.... and we did what we could to clear his air way before calling 911. This information about seizures is also helpful for any kind in our family that is going through that.... My prayers to Taika and the both of you. As a kid, I've lost count of how many seizures and as a baby, I've had very bad breathing problems. I've had, but I'm 33 now. I know he'll be safe as long as the both of you are on top of everything. I made it through, because my parents were there to look out for me. But I made it through, I know Taika will be safe. Haven't finished listening to the podcast yet but just wanted to share that my son has had 3 febrile seizures within his first year of life. We're stationed overseas with no family for support so it was a very difficult time for us. The seizures are incredibly scary and it makes you feel helpless. It's been half a year now and he hasn't had any since so we're hoping he's outgrown it. wish nothing but the best for your family! Keep up the great content! Thank you for sharing your experience with the audience. My son is 12 years old now and this hit home for me to relive that moment I wanted to pass. My son was 2 at the time and we were at my aunts house at the time and he was sitting in a high chair just having dinner, the next you know he went into a seizure, eyes rolled back and shaking a bit and foaming a bit from his mouth. I was scared being my first time seeing it and my aunt and cousin said he’s having a seizure go grab a wet towel quick. I panicked and they were trying to bring the fever down and it took a few minutes for him to come out of it. I immediately called the register nurse right away and we were told to go to the ER, he had a high fever and were sent to the pharmacy for medicine. Second time happened with dad and grandma. They had no idea and face time at that moment and I told them what they had to do. It is heartbreaking to see your own child lifeless and I am so sorry both you and Bart had to go through this but at the same time we do what we know in our power to stay resilient and I’m happy to hear you taught a class about next steps if it was to happen again. Fast forward he is 12 today, at that time we were told he will outgrow it and he did. Taika is a strong boy, many support groups out there and it may be be a medical emergency but really an eye opener in which we can all educate ourselves on for our loved ones. Hey guys. Teacher here. Seizures ,especially at that young age, are way more common than you think. About 20% of the students I've had had experienced it at least once and grew out of it later in life. Really hope it doesn't happen again. There are 3 people in my family who have epilepsy and one of them grew out of his seizures at around 21. U two are such great parents and are doing an amazing job! I started experiencing this for the first time this year. My boyfriend had a history of seizures before I met him but everyone assumed it was from when he was young and dumb (doing drugs and drinking). But this year on memorial day he had a seizure for the first time in front of me and I was so scared and freaked out- called 911. We went to ER and they said it was because he was dehydrated. So i started making sure he was always hydrated two weeks later on fathers day he had another. I waited it out. But two hours later had another. I called 911 and he had another when the paramedics arrived and had two more in the ambulance (i was told by paramedics). When i arrived to the ER he was strapped and unconscious. It was the worst thing to ever walk into. Adults are usually strapped down unless combative. Which I guess he became because he hates being at the hospital. There was blood from his iv- because he kept pulling at it. He didn’t recognize me for the longest time. My heart was so broken. He has them when he is asleep. So i was traumatized for a couple weeks after. I would watch him sleep and any small movement or sound he made would trigger me. Especially since he has Grand- Mal seizures. His are violent and he lets out a cry that makes me think he is in pain- and it is the most gut wrenching sound. As much as he didn’t want to be on medication he is and has now gone through 2 months of medication and has not had one seizure since which I am so grateful for and hope it continues. As much as they tell you it’s okay and not life or death. In that moment seeing your SO go through that you feel like it’s life and death. He is a strong independent man who goes unconscious and becomes helpless… it’s frightening. I still continue to struggle sometimes at night but am getting through it.

Alondra, my brother had seizures just like the ones you described.. only while he was asleep (usually within 30 min of sleeping... I know because he usually had an audiobook playing when we'd find him and he always set the audiobook to play for 30 min). We'd know he was having a seizure due to his loud scream. He also had two dogs in his room and they'd bark when he was having a seizure. My brother had these seizures for 10 years (17-27 years old). He did take medication for them, but I don't think he always remembered to take them. He passed away this year during a seizure and we still don't know how that could have happened. We don't have the autopsy yet. This is the worst pain we've ever experienced. I can't believe he's no longer here. He was young, healthy... full of life. He was just starting his career... baby on the way when this happened (she's born now... 2 months old). My brother was like my son and best friend. I don't want to scare you because I still don't know why this happened to him... his neurologist never told us this was so serious. I heard that it's very rare for someone to pass away during a seizure. I'm sharing because I want to raise awareness... my baby brother is no longer here, and I feel horrible that we were so ignorant and didn't think this would ever happen. One of my life purposes now is to share his story. My brother Sergio was an amazing young man... he never gave up and was my light--always so positive and kind. He wanted to help save lives-- wanted to be a firefighter or EMT... didn't qualify due to his seizures. Then he tried to get into law enforcement and most rejected him too due to his seizures... finally, he got an officer position and he was so happy, but he only was an officer for about 3 months... he had a seizure while sleeping this year in February, and we didn't hear him and found him in the morning. Please anyone reading this, if someone you know has seizures, know that though it's rare, it can be life threatening (and not just due to choking-- that's what we were told, but my brother didn't appear to have choked... we still don't know exactly what happened... hopefully will find out soon). I am in tears for you guys especially Geo- I know it helps to talk about it but you should definitely talk to a professional and bring your mom too if you can so you can unload all the stuff you and your mother had to endure in the past. I watch this channel because I miss that time in my life when I had a family and it was all about the little ones. Young Taika will get through this and will make him stronger and one day give you grandchildren of your own! Stay strong!!!!

Came back to this video, my 6 almost 7 year old had her third seizure after 2 years seizure free. We upped her dosage since she’s gained weight it’s twice a day one morning one night. Hope to get her off medicine at a safe zone. Totally didn’t expect her to have a seizure after not having one for years. Literally happened after we rang in the new year. Came here to this video for comfort thank you🤍 going to try what you guys do with enforcing the naps and watching sugar and dye intake!

You guys did amazing, no one is prepared to see a child have a seizure. It's one of the most terrifying things you can see in normal life. Yes Taika had 1 but the Dr's. are right. Many children have only one in their life because the brain grows so fast there can be glitches in that process. I've worked with kids who had seizure disorders and having to watch them go through it and even possibly having to give rescue meds. It sounds like these 2 you have documented are grand Mal seizures which are the most apparent and they can look scary. They are dangerous like you said because his lips went blue due to lack of oxygen while his lungs/torso muscles were seized. It may be the next step to check him for smaller or absent seizures because it may be a reason if he has moments of 'day dreaming' or 'in the clouds'.I hope they can get him maintenance meds along with rescue meds for safety.

I been following you guys since forever, from y’all dating to engaged and etc. From the moment the little cutie was born and hearing this happening and how you felt and how horrifying this must of felt. I'm not saying Taika will have any further seizures at all but you may want to look into a service dog if it would continue. I have seen people have dogs that can tell when a person is going to have a seizure and alert the person so they can lie down so they don't fall etc. Hopefully he won't have anymore and it won't be an issue.

I'm sorry that Taika had another seizure and it was so traumatic for all of you. The positives that comes out of it is that you have learned more from this experience to help with Taika next time and you get to help those who watches your channel. I shared the following when you shared Taika had his first seizure. I'm sharing again here as I believe it can help you and others. *** I started having a seizure when I was very little. I was too young to speak when my first one happened. It happened when I was in the middle of being fed. As I grew up I had annual EEG and took a daily pill that supposed to prevent seizures. As a child my seizure would happened when I’m sick with a fever. I would have a nightmare, wake up crying, vomit, my forehead would feel a tingling numbness before I black out into a seizure. The seizure doesn’t last long and I don’t feel any pain nor was I aware when it happens. It is more scary for the bystanders and parents seeing all that’s happening and feel helpless. The brain does a reset and the whole body reboots. Prior a person is about to seize they would be in sensory overload, so keep quiet, turn off bright lights and even the sounds of a bathroom fan can be overwhelming. Try to keep the person comfortable as much as possible. Even if you are asking if they are ok they may not respond because they are just trying not to feel sensory overload. Just give them time to respond. Every sensor comes back separately. Hearing always comes back first, but the body doesn’t have control over anything else yet so they can’t respond or signal to you that they hear you. Just keep calling out to the person allows the person’s brain to be awake and tries to wake up and slowly they will regain movement over the body. If no one calls out to them they can be out/asleep until the brain is ready to wake. The next sensor they regain is the position of the body. Then regains feeling and movement of the tips of the fingers, feet and eye lids. The body is extremely tired because all the energy has been exerted (tense as you called it) during the seizure so movement and strength is weak. Speech is always last to come back so don’t freak that the person is now moving but doesn’t respond in words. They are so tired that they don’t have the energy to talk. If they end up responding in words it would be in one word type responses because it takes a lot to reply in a sentence. My word is always “bed” meaning I’m tired and all I want to do it lay down to sleep. Sleeping for as long as 24 hrs is normal. The body is so tired that sleep is more important and eating. I feel 100% better and back to normal when I sleep a whole day after a seizure. I had seizures until I was 12 meaning once a few years. My seizure went away for 12 years and came back when I was 24. The process before a seizure hits as an adult is different than I was a child. Now it is following a weird stomach pain that wakes me up around 3am. I always look at the clock when I wake up like that in the middle of the night. A particular stomach pain would trigger a seizure and I always know when it is coming because my forehead would feel the tingling numbness running across my forehead. I also would feel like vomiting before my forehead tingles. Then I black out and seize. When a person seizes DO NOT TRY TO STOP IT. The energy exerted is so strong that even if you try to bear hug them they could injure you along with them. So just try to keep their head safe to not knock into anything hard like a wall during a seizure. Try to keep time on how long the seizure goes. It always seems longer than it is so keeping time may help the doctors during the examination. Seizure at a young age happens and is more common than expected. Many children grow out of it at a young age. Many also only has one seizure and that’s it. That has happened to my cousin’s kid and my friend’s kid. So don’t think that Taika will have this all his life. Even if he does have to manage and deal with seizures every few years please don’t label him as “not normal”. He is a normal child. Just because people like me who has a seizure occasionally doesn’t mean I am not normal or live a normal life. I do everything another person can do. I totally believe Taika will be and IS ok. Just make sure he has his regular follow ups and stay hydrated. All the best wishes to Taika and you guys. I hope my personal experience provides some deeper understanding of how a person feels and goes thru before, during and after a seizure. Of course everyone is different but “waking” from the seizure is the same. All sensory come back separately and hearing is always first and speech last. Love you guys! 💕 Say Hi to Taika for me! 👋🏼🧸

I've seen someone hit the floor at work and have a seizure. It's the scariest thing when you've seen it for the first time. It could be that taika is overly exhausted. My coworker had seizure after travelling then working right away.

My family has been dealing with my younger sister’s seizures for nearly 8 years, she is 17 now. It’s an emotional situation because you don’t want to see your family go through ilife not being able to do normal things. She was diagnosed with epilepsy, no one in my family knew where this came from. We found out it was from my dads side. Only one other aunt has had seizures. She has both grandmal seizures and the seizures where she stares into space. She has been on a lot of different medications, and testing. Get different opinions from different doctors, she wasn’t eligible to remove a part of the brain where seizure was coming from because when they induced the seizure her whole brain lit up. More testing led to her being eligible to have VNS which is a machine that will be implanted in the brain to lessen her seizures. She usually has seizures once every two weeks, usually caused by stress or not eating enough etc. My friends daughter also had a seizure and was misdiagnosed with epilepsy, she actually had a small tumor in the brain come to find out with different doctor opinions. Best of luck to you both I hope that Taika will grow out of it, he will be ok!

In this situation and not have Gradma under stress or little kids knowing codes to get into phone , just say into the IPhone or android “ siri or Google call 911 now and it will dial emergency services and put u on speaker .

My brother experiences seizures and it’s the most terrible thing to witness :( it sucks because he’s a non verbal autistic also… luckily he takes medication that helps prevent them. Experiencing something like this is truly traumatizing and I sympathize with you guys so much on this… you guys are great parents and wonderful humans. You guys did everything you could atm. I’m glad Tyka was able to bounced right back afterwards he’s a strong kid :) sending all my love and prayers to your family ❤️
