Taiwan and the Philippines share more with each other than most people know. Taiwan is the Philippine's closest neighbor to the north. In fact, Taiwan's southernmost island - Orchid Island (蘭嶼) is only 218 kilometers from the Philippine's northernmost islands - the Batanes Islands. The indigenous peoples of both of these islands are blood-related according to DNA testing. In fact, the DNA of many indigenous tribes in the Philippines and Micronesia (e.g., Palau, Guam, Saipan, etc.) can be traced back to Taiwan. The DNA doesn't continue to China or Japan or Southeast Asia. Scientists don't know why. That's why Taiwan is considered a magical place for many Austronesian aboriginals. There are over 200,000 Filipinos living and working in Taiwan. In fact, as of March 2023, there are also approximately 8,000 Filipinos who are married to Taiwanese citizens with many of their children holding both Filipino and Taiwanese citizenship. Filipino OFW's have been treated well by their Taiwanese employers. If China ever attacks Taiwan, of course it will affect many Filipinos! It's like your neighbor's house catching fire. The resulting smoke and burning embers will come to your house, and it will catch fire, too! Therefore, it is in the best interest for Taiwan's neighbors to the north (Japan) and south (the Philippines) to prevent that from ever happening! All like-minded countries in the region should band together to let any aggressor know that its actions will never be tolerated. Peace through strength.

4:25 - 4:27 With all due respect, I just would like to correct one of your analyst speakers who stated that the EDCA was signed under the Duterte's administration. He correctly said that the EDCA was signed in the year 2014 but it is not under the administration of Duterte but rather it is in the administration of Aquino III. The pivotal actions of Duterte's administration towards China was one of the reasons why the EDCA was not utilized in the said administration.
@snarveien1853 Жыл бұрын
2014 EDCA stated that 1. US will only NOTIFY the PH Govt of US equipment pre-positioning --- NOT APPROVAL 2. Philippine Soldiers CANNOT access US pre-positioned equipment ---- These were also criticisms of ex-Sen. Mirriam Defensor Santiago & then Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Thus, Duterte sidelined it, as it is dangerous if PH Govt cannot control these US equipment pre-positioning. He has been pro-Neutrality, but ofc being Neutral these days has been labeled Pro-China. Also, ALLIANCE does not define Neutrality, based on International Law, which can mean that PH maybe an US Ally but it can be Neutral, if you do not have targets within your territory, in case of US-China war. Later 1.5 years of Duterte, accdg. to US Funded CSIS-AMTI Gregory Poling, US govt courted Duterte and they agreed on the following 1. US will need the PH Govt APPROVAL for US equipment pre-positioning 2. Philippine Soldiers CAN access US pre-positioned equipment Thus, if you listen to PH Senate hearing, when the 2014 EDCA will expire in 2024, they are on the move to have the need for PH Govt APPROVAL & PH Soldiers access included in the soon to be Amended EDCA next year (2024).

It is not easy for China to attack the Philippines due to the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) between the Philippines and the US. If, for example, China were to attack the Philippines, the US would be compelled to help, and the result would be China also targeting US assets. This would create chaos because if someone were to attack the US, NATO would be required to provide assistance. China is clearly aware that such a scenario could unfold.

A British, Canadian, Japanese military 🪖 base in the Philippines would be highly appreciated by the Philippines. As a former US territory, my grandparents had access to the best public education and their lifestyle was a breath of fresh air...food, good wages, stable Philippine money...a well managed national government, etc. US law passed by the American Congress affirmed the people's interest in creating a nation from various indigenous tribes of the 7,100 islands. Political parties were formed to create a framework for Democratic multi party system. A free market system was instilled within every educated Filipino, Entrepreneurship, Free Enterprise and recently the option for Bi-national Citizenry. It is a good arrangement for a native born Filipino holding two passports, having two options, two choices...it's Democratic...Democratic and Democratic. It is a bit odd that Taiwan doesn't understand the Philippines, it's as close a neighbor as Japan. Significant portions of the Taiwanese manufacturing industry is predominantly manned by Overseas Filipino Workers. Up until Quirino-to-Ramos administration (1950s-1970s), the Philippines and Taiwan had warmer ties. But in the past 20 years the Guomindang and the DPP have failed to create support in the Philippines, such a pity as the Republic of the Philippines used to have the strongest ROC support from the Chinese nationals living in the Philippines. Chiang Kai-Shek College, a RP-ROC recognized school and Xavier School, an ROC-era Chinese Jesuit school are both the preeminent Chinese schools in the Philippines. But the clout and influence of these institutions have on Filipino Ethnic Chinese (Chinoys) are no longer singularly sympathetic to the ROC plight, but more agnostic to the PRC vs ROC relations. In my opinion it was narrow minded for the Taiwanese government to not prioritize making Taiwan-Philippine relationship as "sweet" as or as important as the South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand relationship. These are the only 5 technical treaty allies of the US, those bound to defend the Americans in the Pacific, the US hubs to its spokes. And as a country that's deeply concerned with its existence, one sticking point Taiwan has with Philippines is still the islands and the sea that it also claims in the West Philippine Sea. All these could've been solved earlier if only Taiwanese governments valued their neighbors to the South as they valued their neighbors to the North.
@melchorcarino9375 Жыл бұрын
Adding to that, Taiwan or the ROC claims the entire Champa Sea, WPS (South China Sea). In fact, they oppose the 2016 Arbitration Ruling.

Thank you for your comment! You really helped me to understand the animosity I’ve always sensed in Filipinos toward their Taiwanese neighbours….Yes, it was very short-sighted of them, indeed, not to have worked harder to improve ties between the two countries (particularly considering their precarious diplomatic situation)….You said that ties were “warmer” under earlier administrations-do you think the cooling of ties had anything to do with The Philippines kicking American forces out of the country? I’d appreciate your feedback.
@enoshima6699 Жыл бұрын
@@Shineon83 It did not help that the American clout became less obvious when the bases left. But I think the largest policy change was perhaps the 1992 Taiwan-PRC consensus and subsequent other policy relations between Tw-PRC, "one China, different interpretations" indirectly contributed to this "cooling". This had the effect of having less and less people to people contact between the Taiwan and the Philippines, because all countries prioritized economic relationship with the mainland than Taiwan. Since, Taiwan was already recognizing that there is One China, what use is there to antagonize the mainland? One specific aspect about the Philippines that is helpful in understanding the relations difference to other US treaty allies is for example the Visa free access for tourism from Taiwan for Filipinos was only granted in 2017 and is in an annual reviewed policy, contrast that to HongKong that has granted the same, way back. This also translates to number of Overseas Filipinos Workers in HongKong that is overwhelmingly larger than the number of same Filipino workers in Taiwan. Taiwan has visa on arrival access for the other US treaty allies. These are important because these people movement create connection and people to people ties. That is just one aspect there are a lot more, but there was a missed opportunity 10 years ago before the previous admin's tenure that could've strengthened the PH-Taiwan relations. It is never too late, but it is now harder. There are more influential Mainland sympathizers in the Ph. and the animating factor of US-Ph anti-PRC alliance is the same Island Claims that Taiwan also claims.
@nestorportuguez8964 Жыл бұрын
The wrong of the Pilipino on this WHY TAIWAN is not recognizing the Pilipinos right in WPS was that THE PHILIPPINES IS KEEP ON BELIEVING THE( ONE CHINA POLICY) OF IMPOSED BY BEIJING although TAIWAN is not in favor for this. and one very suspecious is the WAY OF DUTERTEs administration before, he always saying TAIWAN IS A PART OF CHINA. From me, if to beg pardon for TAIWAN for not supporting its effort not to be undermined by Beijing on its affair as being another country, l will. This one way of helping TAIWAN from the bad intetest of China.

Possibly, Marcos, on the political side, is hoping that Philippines can use US technology for greater military capabilities. We all know that it's good for a country to be strong both economically and militarily. China's philosophy is ideal for aspiring middle sized countries: economically - feed the people first; militarily - show that you can afford war and throw a punch, if threatened. More importantly, the military strength bolsters the citizens' dignity. US' political philosophy is not for most countries. US will spend a few hundred times more to establish military bases all over the world, never mind that most are on lease ( ie can be lost any time). Economically, US is hoping that its weapon sales will contribute to its own country. It therefore doesn't have liquidity to implement policies to immediately benefit the citizens eg healthcare, inflation control measures, home ownership, and education etc, just to name a few. Perhaps they believe that the best form of defence is to attack. Due to the nature of US-brand politics, and Presidency being term-based, nothing is certain and policians are impatient to get fast results, by hook or by crook. In the short to medium term, the citizens suffer ie if positive results are certain. The risk is that the policies can be wrong and the citizens may be destined to suffer forever. On a his own personal perspective, Marcos may have to consider that Presidency in the Philippines is also term-based. If Marcos has gold or other international business objectives, he needs to think for his personal future. After his term of office, he will want to be able to travel to US. Remember that he was banned from entering US before he is elected. To be optimistic, it may be good for Filipinos. It is said that his father kept gold all over the world and the Marcos may one day bring back gold to distribute among Filipinos. He needs a US travel visa to get the gold in US and US-allied countries Marcos is playing a delicate balancing game. He must think like a Chinese domestically and side with the American politically. This is the only way to bring welfare (economics)and dignity(politics)back to the people😅

The US-PH treaty is a two-way street. An attack on the Philippines will invoke a defense response from the US, and vice versa. The US president has pledged to come to the defense of Taiwan. If the US becomes involved in a war, do you think the Philippines has a choice? Are they bound by the treaty to come to the defense of the US? The Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) is key in this situation, as the US is helping the Philippine military modernize. With a strong military, the Philippines itself becomes a form of deterrence, causing China to think twice about invading Taiwan, especially considering that Taiwan is surrounded by major US allies in the Pacific, such as Japan, South Korea, and Australia. The modernization of the Philippine military will be a thorn in China's plans.

Its not a deterence because China has experience in fighting US and 15 countries during Korean war , during Vietnam war,Cambodian war and Laos war. Macarthur was shamed heavily by China thru losing North Korea to China. This coming war will just a third rematch between China and US.

@@silentwatcher1455 lol? here we go again. mc arthur shame heavily by china?! where is you're logic ang commonsense? did you know that chinese army got massacred in Vietnam? and even in the Korean War. 40,000 Chinese in the middle army division of 200,000 got massacred by 1000 Filipinos, and it pettied by McArthur to stop the war since it was a one-sided massacre. But in the propaganda of the Chinese Special Child Mongoloids, it says that they won the war! huh?! how come? Did you know that the Chinese army suffers a lot from hunger, thirst, frostbite, lack of winter clothing, weapons, logistics, and immunization while crossing the snowy borderlands? You know how many were dead? and mostly of them are not in good shape to walk, and 1/10th of whole army of 2million+ was dead before they confronted America or the UN in the war. How funny of you! Ahh, oh yes, you're saying the current China,! Is the strongest, you say? you sure?! Even without touching you guys, you're China is finished, lol, because you're China is so unbalanced from a domestic, economic, and population perspective that even only jus isolated you once again so you could root to die again with your aging population. Exactly. The US isn’t updating The Philippine military with the latest gear & weaponry, and building new air strips & communication systems out of the “goodness” of its heart. US knows that Filipino troops have always been well-trained & disciplined.…They want an equally effective ally at their side …

Although the Philippine military isn’t as modernized as other countries, it’s one of the most experienced in the world. It has been fighting insurgents in the South for decades. One of the reasons why muslim extremists with ties to ISIS failed in establishing a caliphate in Marawi.

"MDT treaty" between the United States and the Philippines there is a Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) between the two countries that was signed on August 30, 1951. It's worth noting that the treaty does not automatically require the United States to take military action; it provides a framework for consultation and cooperation between the two countries. The decision to respond to an armed attack would be made through diplomatic and strategic discussions between the United States and the Philippines. Please keep in mind that there may have been updates or developments regarding the treaty since my last knowledge update. It is always advisable to refer to the latest official sources and news for the most up-to-date information. -- google

The mutual defense treaty between US and PH is for defense in case one is attacked. It does not apply when one of the two initiates an offensive war. Taiwan, the US nor the PH have no intention to initiate an offensive war against any country. BUT China does. When that happens, PH or US can call the other when one of them is attacked by China.

Many Filipinos believe that America's presence here will make China move out from the West Philippine Sea or EEZ of the Philippines but the truth is, territorial dispute are not part or scope of the Mutual Defense Treaty or the EDCA. Meaning, America can't do anything about the China-Philippine tertitorial issue. It makes sense because their added EDCA sites were put in areas near Taiwan. Meaning, Filipinos still don't get the logic why America is here in our country. The irony is that, PBBM's stand is that he always wanted peace talks and he can't sacrifice Filipinos in exchange for war and America's hegemony. So i came into a speculation that it might be President Marcos was blackmailed to something if he refuse the extension of EDCA or the removal of the Mutual Defense Treaty. America is really the true devil here.
