Just so you know, the Mutual Defense Treaty between the Philippines and the USA only involves areas within the Philippine and USA territories, not outside. So if ever China invaded Taiwan and the USA helped Taiwan, the Philippines is NOT obligated to help the USA unless the war reaches the most northern part of the Philippine territory. For your information, the USA does not officially recognize Taiwan as an independent sovereign country. Only 13 countries recognize Taiwan as a country while most countries recognize Taiwan as part of China. The only reason why the USA is meddling on Taiwan issues was because of the world's most popular company in Taiwan, the TSMC, which supplies 60% of the most advanced chips in the world. The USA won't allow a forced subversion.

Second, I doubt China will attack the Philippines, Japan and South Korea just because of the "US military bases". That's a foolish way to drag more enemies into the war. Compared to the US military bases in Japan and South Korea, the US military bases here in the Philippines are only allowed for stationing US troops, ships and aircraft for defensive purposes only of the Philippines. Not allowed to use for Taiwan's defense. Ammo and weapon depots are also not allowed. In short, whatever US military base here in the Philippines can't be used for Taiwan and really insignificant to make a difference in defense of Taiwan.

I think the EDCA bases where most likely to be expanded into more Military Camps across the Archipelago. Philippines being a Major Non-NATO Ally in Asia-Pacific, together with Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand. Remember that the Philippines had always been fighting side-by-side by Americans as far as the World Wars 1 and 2, Cold War, Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq War, and the US War on Terror. Not to mention, the Filipinos and Filipino-American deep penetration in working on US Military(especially the Navy) and the American Military-Industrial Complex.

Most countries like the USA and the Philippines do not officially recognize Taiwan as an independent sovereign country and instead adhere to the One-China policy agreement on which Taiwan is considered as part of China. USA signed the agreement with China since 1979 that's why Taiwan lost permanent membership in UNSC and lost official membership in the UN and other countries just follow USA. Taiwan also rejected the Hague Ruling in favor of the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea because Taiwan also claims the 9 dash line.

Interestingly Duterte stated that he will ride a jetski to protest against China's illigal artificial islands, after the US went against the so called drug war extra judicial killings, I was disappointed that he pivoted towards China & Russia. China might also promised him some of those BRI loans. Marcos on the other hand started off as China leaning, I hope he will grow a backbone to continue supporting US on Philippine soil to undermine China's growing expansionist ambitions. Duterte's reign has allowed China foothold influencing this fear of getting involved in a conflict with China. President Marcos should press the US to not only provide military assistance........but also economic assistance. Re-opening US military bases in the Philippines does help economically, to a certain extent. But actually encouraging US manufacturers to relocate (especially the ones that are leaving China) to the Philippines can be much longer lasting and have a much wider impact. The foundation of any truly strong military is a solid, well-built civilian economy.

The ambasador who said that Phiilippines should focus on its internal problem does not fully understand the sitiuation in the region. China is threat to Philippines because of kalayaan group of island, hence we need US to keep the west Philippine sea open for all. We know our value to the US and we know that US is taking advantage of us right now. We are taking risk to buy time and for me thats okay in the near term. If it will push Taiwans occupupation by 3 to 5 years, by having a US base that is close to Taiwan, thats totally worth for the the world. In the end we dont want to remain as part of the first island chain of US defense, we are slowly building our external defense on a limited budget, for now Philippines will justplay its card to help protect its sovereignty.

He sided with China because one of the reasons according to him during his time as a local Mayor in Davao, he applied for a U.S. Visa but his application was denied. See, how shallow this guy was? With China's bilateral economic agreement with the Php during Duterte's Administration, nothing came to fruition for all 6 years of his office. China did not fulfill the promises made & that is exactly what is happening with the Marcos administration.

The enhanced EDCA benefits Taiwan militarily by preventing CPLA navy access to strait waters between Taiwan and the Philippines. The governor of Cagayan Valley province is pro China and was willing to let China buy and develop an island near the Luzon Island however the Filipinos are not allowed access to. This agreement did not push through.

the former taiwan ambassador to indonesia is taking rubbish. americas domestic issues (e.g. homeless, debt, gunlaw, etc) are much worse than the philippines! since the time of president duterte the southern part of the philippines(whole) has been peaceful up to the present time of president marcos jr. philippines economy is performing well, poverty rate down, crime rate also down. phlippines territorial defense priority is external threat (bully china, unlawful adiz) not domestic. our infrastracture is heavily dependent from jica(japan) not china. philippines is a peace loving nation and we will defend what is ours and the oppress. history speaks for itself(ww2, vietnam war, korean war, etc)! eye for eye, tooth for tooth!

I am from Indonesia. I can speak Hokkien, and I love travelling to Taipei. This conflict between US China is really concerning. Long story short, both China and US wants microchips of Taiwan, that is as far as I know. Thus I want to know what Taiwanese views of this situation. We in Indonesia is concerned as US allies is heating up with China. Bc should conflict broke. Not only it will affect us economically, but we wish we can stay non aligned, and shout out for peace.

This Taiwanese debate seesms very confuse or very carefull of their opinion on issue on Philippines or Indonesia or China. There is no no need to swing or turn around about the topic that consume a lot of time in confusion. Philippines and Indonesia send workers to Taiwan because they have EXCESS labor force and benifits of the higher wages in Taiwan than their countries. Philippines and Indonesia foreign policies is VERY CLEAR, they will PROTECT their national interest and NOT Beijing nor Washington interest, They have ASEAN CENTRALITY that MATTERS. Taiwan is also a problematic country for the Philippines. We have our own sea border disputes with them. You would think that Taiwan would establish closer relations with the Philippines given its precarious situation but SoKorea, which is much further north has more social and economic ties with the Philippines. It doesn't bother me at all if China swallows up Taiwan. Taiwan is like a panda. It struggles to survive but its fate is onky extinction.

Taiwan is always a good neighbor despite some issues. China has continuously bullied and taken advantage of the Philippines, even during the former president’s time when we were supposed to have shifted PH alliance to them. China floods PH with drugs and toxic, inferior products. It offers lopsided and usurious contracts. Taiwan sells superior products and brings jobs and investments to the PH despite having no formal diplomatic relations. Taiwanese behave properly and respectfully when visiting PH. There are lots of reports of unruly Chinese workers and tourists in the PH. (My personal experience with them was quite okay. Our clients were professionals and respectful but we cannot ignore reports from many people.) They also brought crime but they mostly victimized fellow Chinese or other foreigners. Filipinos are treated reasonably well in Taiwan. Chinese sells tourists toxic food and products and consider many ethnicities beneath them. Many restaurants use sewer oil. The balance of trade between PH and China favors China. Its economy benefits more than it gives. PH economy benefits a lot from the US economy. The best jobs and opportunities come from US /Western companies and industries. The path forward is clear.

What do you think? First of all, Filipinos don't know how to use their own natural resources smartly. Hanggang export na lng tayo ng ating produkto pero kulang tayo sa alam kung paano ito gamitin sa pangsariling atin. Mas abundant pa nga dapat tayo sa spices kung ikukumpara sa Thailand. Some of the spices in Thailand came from the Philippines but unfortunately, Filipinos aren't smart enough how to deal with our own products at yan ay isang malaking sampal na katotohanan sa atin.

The Philippines should copy the model from Vietnam to counter balance these superpowers. Never depend on any single particular superpower to support you. You need to be confident on your feet.
