@@JamesJJSMilton The dude had actually a family that loves him, and i read in a Q&A someone asked the author how the parents are doing without Subaru and he answered that they are having a rough time and they are worried sick about him, police investigations aren't bringing any results( of course). It's really sad, i want to see him go back to his old world for real and tell his parents about everything even if it's for a short period, after seeing them in the last episode i absolutely can't bear them going through all of this because of a different world witch.

I was so shocked when I read this for the first time... Growing up in a very traditional Chinese family, kids are almost like a retirement plan, you have kids because it's "tradition." At a certain age, you just *have* to get married and have kids. Then, you raise your kids to be successful and earn money so they could take care of you like you took care of them, or in some cases take care of your legacy (family shop). Very logical and very Confucius, but that's why you'll also rarely find parents like Subaru's who just lets him do him. They wanted to give birth to him and raise him because they wanted to give love to him, not because they wanted something in return... For me it was so bizarre and infinitely heartwarming... If only more parents were like that...

This episode was so deep. Now it makes sense why Subaru is trying to help people so much. The subaru who lost motivation was kid subaru. It can be alot for a kid who was talented to be left in his fathers shadow. The teen subaru just never found a motivation afterwards until he got trasnported. That actually explains why he was so desperate to save others it was his own motivation that he found and something only he could do.

That was quite a heavy episode but valuable in so many ways because we can deduce a lot from what this episode has revealed to us. We have finally gotten the big puzzle piece that is Subaru’s past and it tells us so much about why he acted the way he did up until now. Many wondered why Subaru was so accepting of the fact that he was just transported to a new world at the beginning of S1. Subaru has lived most of his life in his father’s shadow. Kenichi is charismatic, talented and well respected all around, qualities that people more or less also expected from Subaru. This was true early into Subaru’s life and he constantly got positive feedback for that until the point came where he wavered in upholding that kind of image. Being Kenichi’s Son turned from a badge of honour for Subaru to a painful weight on his shoulder and he was crushed by the expectations of others all the while his self worth crumbled away. And now here is this completely new world where no one knows him let alone his father. Here he isn’t Subaru Natsuki, son of Kenichi Natsuki. No one will put these high expectations on him. It was a new chance at life for Subaru, one he thought was tailored towards him and him alone. Sure he loved his parents dearly but the sheer pressure & negative feelings he held for the previous world and his position in it probably overwrote whatever lingering positive feelings he had for it left. There are all kinds of neat little details about Subaru’s character in regards to his old life throughout Season 1 that just now got more depth. Like his rather empty phone contacts which are most likely due to Subaru closing himself off entirely during High School ( S1 Ep 1 ) There is a particular scene in Season 1 that gets a whole lot more depth & context with this episode. The fabled ( S1 Ep 13 ) where Subaru proclaims himself Emilia’s knight and clashes with Julius. A centre theme in that entire exchange is being worthy of a title. Subaru proclaims himself a knight which leads to Julius questioning him on his worth for that very title. And when Julius implies that Emilia isn’t showing she is proud to have Subaru as a knight things start to fall apart. See the resemblance to Subaru and his title as Kenichi’s Son? To drive that point in even further let me quote Subaru’s next words "Is being a knight that big of a deal? You just happened to be born into the job! Don’t act like a big shot with your daddy’s name!" followed by a very clear visual indicator that Subaru is pained by these words cause as we now know it was projection all along. Another example is the second arc when Subaru starts working earnestly at the mansion and we learn that he is very happy with earning his place through hard work to a point where he declines Emilia’s offer to heal his wounds. Subaru was given a chance, not because he is Kenichi’s Son but because he is him and Subaru is giving it his all to be worthy of the expectations put onto him ( S1 Ep 4 ) All throughout Season 1 Subaru has the tendency to suddenly be all outgoing, goofy and hyper as if he just flipped a switch. This confused both viewers and the characters within the show. People eventually concluded that this was a coping mechanism for Subaru to deal with the things thrown at him but we still never really knew why he dealt with trauma in this way. This episode gives us the necessary info to finally get why Subaru behaves the way he does in such scenes. When Subaru started to fall behind from being the best and felt like he was in danger of not meeting everyone’s expectations anymore he shifted his priorities to making everyone around him laugh, to be as charismatic as he could be. He put on an extremely noisy, hyper attitude in order to not only be the center of attention but also to feel like he was still the best at something. This is how Subaru got through the early stages of his childhood until the people surrounding him outgrew this kind of behaviour. It went from being funny to annoying so people started to move on. Subaru didn’t try to change his ways but rather distance himself more & more. As a result Subaru’s experience in socializing with others became severely lopsided towards what he knew & worked in a portion of his life…putting on a clown show, making others laugh and be as loud and outgoing as possible. Now Subaru is here in a new world and desperate to make a good impression on others. Not only that but he is experiencing horrific things, ones he cannot talk about. So what does he do as a result? Fall back into the pattern he knows the best by putting on the overly happy jokester facade. At his core Subaru really isn’t this noisy annoying brat, he just can’t help behaving this way sometimes because it’s just imprinted on him from his past life. Luckily he has been bettering himself in that regard ever since From Zero happened in S1 Ep 18 where he openly laments this exact behaviour as one of the things he hates about himself. Seriously, listen to Subaru’s rant about himself again after this episode. Also since it keeps coming back up "I'm watching you, you're watching me, so I won't look down" finds itself even into this flashback episode. There are countess more examples like these, more than I can realistically tackle here so I encourage people to at some point look back at some episodes and try to see the new light that is being shone on them. I gotta say I loved and feared the scene when Subaru sits in his room and observes the clock as it advances towards the point of no return. It’s painfully relatable to me ( not in the context of school ) but I had moments where I had to do something and I looked at the clock waiting for the moment where I could give myself an out by going "eh, it’s already too late for it anyway" and not blame myself further. All of this is already very relatable and emotional but what broke me personally is when Subaru apologizes repeatedly and openly laments the facts that he will never be able to repay his parent’s love & support. His chances on returning to this world, especially anytime soon are very slim so Subaru has already resigned himself to the idea that he will never be able to see his parents again. He can’t repay them for all they did by watching after them when they’re old & in need of his support. All in all a highly emotional and relatable episode which I hope lets some people finally warm up to Subaru’s character.

Your analysis is perfectly on point. It is why I love Subaru so much as for me the best MC in anime. Not because he is overpowered or cool (actually he is). He is the most grounded and relatable character I ever saw, for me seeing Subaru is disturbing because I struggled with depression and still do today. Seeing Subaru in episode 18 season 1 and here episode 4 season 2 made me shaken because it somehow mirror my own life. No joke, watching Subaru outdoing himself and becoming a better man inspires me a lot and I wish to be able to move forward in the future as he does, even without the ability of "Return by death"

To think that the last word of his real parents was take care and he didnt reply and was with that broken inside face, that is the last thing that Subaru family know about him, for them he is missing and dont know where he went, probably they are very very sad and depressed about that. Subaru won't be able to keep the promise that said to them or say goodbye, or anything that happend in that episode, and he is aware of that, and he is suffering a lot because of it, because he wont be able to repay them or tell them the truth! And that now he is happy and is smiling again, It'a too much, it's so sad and depressing. I can see why Subaru got so attached to the people living in the Roswaal Manor now because up until that point Subaru had no kind of real relationships with anyone not even his parents. This episode is Subaru letting out all the stuff he wanted to say to his parents getting closure in a sense and he was only able to do that due to Emilia and Rem who gave him the courage to not give up, something he desperately needed to hear back then.

This whole episode was a master piece. In a world where every character is from a bad family, an orphan, or has a family that isn't even relevant, Subaru has strong father and a loving mother that encouraged and love him. I'm going to be honest, Subaru is maybe my favorite main character in any anime. He manages to be both incredibly relatable while still feeling like his own character instead of falling into a trope. There are so many layers to him that it seems a lot of people don't recognize, and it makes me really happy that a lot more people are starting to understand. That's why this episode is so great; it re-contextualizes a lot of Subaru's moments in the first season while also being heart-wrenching and heartwarming at the same time. The performances, writing, editing, and music are spot on here. I'm really excited, since from what I've heard it only goes up from here.

I was just surprised that it took until this point for Subaru to even THINK about his parents or his life back home. Like, he never even brought any of it up to himself or to anyone and we don't find out about any of his feelings towards even getting isekai'd until he's forced to live through this sequence. I thought that was the only weird part of this. The timing of it.

@@xinf3ctdx Fair point. I think you could make a case about how Subaru's early personality left him pretty distant from his family. Keep in mind that it wasn't until Arc 3 and seeing a horrible reflection of himself in Betelgeuse that Subaru started to grow up and think more about the people close to him. Add to that how he almost instantly got swept up in the insanity of RBD and the rest of the world and it makes some sense as to why he finally realized what he lost in coming to the world.

What a beautiful episode that develops Subaru so much, the reasons he bursts and acts comical happy is just a coping mechanism, the reason why he used to think have the title of being a knight was such big deal to him. it was to relate to the title of being the son of Kenichi a man who can seemingly do anything to give him something to strive for no matter how toxic it was for him. This episode explores the man known as subaru to such a beautiful extent and really puts his personality and flaws and change that's happened through out the seasons also what loveable pair of parents that just want the best for him like any parent should 10/10 episode so excited for more.

Ngl although I’ve seen so many different types of anime and have definitely seen my fair share of sad scenes, this is one of the few that has actually made me cry, the part where Subaru’s mom says take care and he didn’t say anything back really hit home for me. I haven’t been in that specific situation since I still live with my parents but as a teenager I worries me to death that I hope I don’t do this when I get older, that i hope I won’t take everything they did for for granted, and that Im doing the best I can to be a son they’re proud of also recently I’ve tried to let my parents know that I’m grateful for them and love them, I can be a bit awkward about it since I never had talks like that growing up but I don’t want to let that affect me. This might sound cheesy but as I grow up I want to do the things I love in life and be happy and if I can find a job like that or even If i Dont, that’s fine I just want to pay my parents back for all the years they’ve cherished me and cared for me, them being immigrants from another country makes life harder for them then an average person and I want them to retire early , relax, and enjoy each other’s company when me and my siblings can’t visit them, and even though they’ll pass away I want them to know that I’ll cherish all the memories and fun times that were possible thanks to them, this got lengthier then i expected but if you’re still reading, then my message is basically, cherish ,remember, and thank those around you, be it family members, friends or even neighbors and coworkers, Subaru never got to actually see his parents but still accepted his regrets and moved on, as for you remember to keep those who make you happy in life in your heart no matter and yes I believe in echidna supremacy....

The feeling of loneliness is so well portrayed in this anime but has those sweet moments of Subaru’s past that brings tears to my eyes. This is by far one of the best shows I’ve watched.

This episode made me cry so damn much, but at the same time I don't regret any of those tears. Even if they weren't the actual real life parents, to me, Subaru felt as if he actually was saying farewell to his mother

well there's a need for cuts, the cuts only start to become a problem when they cut something that it's hard to put later(maybe a flashback, it's not uncommon)

Not really much of choice. They got cut something. Gotta be grateful that most of these episodes are 27 minutes long in industry where 18-20 min episodes are the norm. They are clearly adapting as much as they can.

spoilers for LN/WN Arc 6 (Season 4) There's a really moving scene when Subaru gets a "reality check" and starts really thinking hard about how he didn't say goodbye to his parents. I cried at that part. If it gets animated, it will be one of the best scenes ever.

Isekai characters never reflecting on how their life was or barely reflected on it and just going along with everything that's happening in their isekai world always bothered me.
