The one thing I like about this episode that reviewers don't often mention is that each of the older sisters portray a different reason why older humans (usually parents) get overly involved in the lives of their kids. Rainbow Dash wants to relive her past experiences through someone else. Applejack is part of a family with a deep tradition in an activity, and wants to see it carried on. And Rarity sees this as a chance to correct what she views as a mistake from her past.

I can't tell you how many sports events I gone to or taken part in that have been outright RUINED by my dad being... well, Dash Rarity and AJ in this episode basically. It's called "living vicariously through your family". It's real, it's here, and it's a bit heartbreaking because it suggests the person chosing to live their life through their child has given up the hope of their own life being improved. You know what would’ve made this episode better? Have the CMC ask their sisters for help and when the three wouldn’t listen to reason the first time, have the CMC ask the other three of the Mane Six to help out. Picture it: Twilight has tons of books so she might have one about the original derbies and could help Sweetie Belle draw inspiration to make a traditional cart, Scootaloo could ask Pinkie Pie for help with most creative because who else is more creative than the pony always experimenting with combined cupcake flavors and Fluttershy...well, she might not know much about going fast but she’d probably be happy just helping Applebloom make her cart. Then the CMC could compete in the derby with these three and when their sisters see how much fun they had doing what they want to do, they apologize and congratulate their sisters on winning their prizes and they thank their friends for helping them out. If it had gone this way, it would’ve been a great episode

"But you mustn't think older ponies automatically know best." Except that's exactly what kids are taught. The older people are authority figures, therefore they know everything and disagreeing with them makes you a disobedient brat. After two incidents at my school that caused anxiety and depression that I'm still dealing with, the school called my parents to inform them of the first incident FIVE HOURS AFTER IT HAPPENED and didn't call my parents AT ALL after the second, arguably more serious incident. If I had asked to call my parents so they could be informed right away after both incidents and pick me up from school, I would have probably been able to spend more time sorting through my feelings. Instead, I decided that since the adults hadn't called my parents and asked them to come pick me up, that I was just being stupid. Both times, I shakily carried on with my day, trying and failing to get through the day without having heightened anxiety. The adults in this situation didn't know best, but I've always been taught that you should always listen to trusted adults, so I followed along because I thought they knew what they were doing. I feel that the CMCs weren't in the wrong at all for following along with what the older ponies were doing. If adults want to use the 'but we don't always know everything' line to make kids feel bad about not speaking up, the adults have to do their part and make sure the younger generations know this. You can't tell someone that you don't always know best to justify your mistake, then go back to acting like you know all the secrets of the universe and every possible outcome of every possible choice. You just can't do that. Yes, I am an angry adolescent who has no trust in authority figures. Except Firebrand and Ari, of course. They're hecking awesome.

#1 that story is why I *HATE* authority. #2 the c.m.c.s have a little bit of the blame. They knew Their sisters as well as we did. Their shtick is so obvious I don’t need to explain anything. So the c.m.c.s could’ve went to one of the ponies who knew better with the respective ribbons. The adults have at least 90 percent of the blame but the kids should at least have 10 percent of it

9:15 I can only imagine Vaati going "Oh no, not another song cue!" if this setup somehow occurred in the Equestrian Wind Mage universe (one of my favorite stories on FimFiction written by LordSirivant). I say 'somehow' because after they take down one of Majora's avatars running loose in the Palace of Winds, they swore a vow that they would defy Majora to the bitter end, thus catching the attention of the Three Golden Goddesses. Scootaloo probably would have just gone to Vaati (who is also her adoptive father), and Vaati would have recruited some of his monsters to help with the construction of the carts. I hope that story arc doesn't die before LordSirivant finishes The Equestrian Wind Mage: Season 3. It's too good to stop now.

Honestly, I don't know if trying to switch would have worked, and putting their feet down might have been an issue as well, because of one major factor: Applejack. I think the reason why the CMC approaching the carts outside of their overt interests works when it didn't in an earlier episode is because it's _carts._ Generally it all comes down to design, rather than personal talent, and only Applebloom - who has actual technical know-how - wanted to take the speed trophy. The rest came down to visual design, which they've probably improved upon over time. Also, given how Diamond treats her butler in background scenes in this episode, one could say she and her butler actually worked together and helped out. Maybe he became something of a foster parental figure after they worked out differences.
