The teacher eventually found me because I could not resist connecting my guitar to an amplifier they had for performances in the classroom.

I like the contrast in the way they dress. Kiko's style is so reminiscent of 70's and 80's heavy metal fashion and Jason's style is influenced so much by internet memes and modern alternative fashion. It's almost like a visual representation of passing on the torch. Like kiko said "wow this is the next generation" and he's right. Kiko may not be revered as much as past metal legends like Marty Friedman or Dimebag Darrell but Kiko's work on Angra shows that his skill and knowledge is in the same league

I played a lot as child too. But I didn't progress because all I played was power chords. I'm 37 now and recently decided to actually start practicing with structure. So rather than jamming 12 hours a day I practice in 1 hour stints multiple times a day (on my off days) and 1-2 hours every evening during work days and I specifically target one technique. Let me tell you I've progressed so much just in 2-3 months it's insane. You know the Paul Gilbert practice riff? I couldn't play that at all 2-3 months ago. Now I can play it at about 100bpm when I'm warmed up. Imagine where I'll be in 5 years. So my experience is that practicing with a structure and taking frequent breaks for your brain to form new connections (muscle memory) is waaaaaaay more effective than just pushing yourself for 12 hours a day non stop and just jamming around.

Good stuff. Just saw you Kiko at the Concord Pavilion on Sept. 2nd! The best Metal show in recent times! I have learned over the years, by watching how other people play guitar, and in all styles, your subconscious picks up details that repetitive practice does not help improve. I spend hours, weekly watching other players and it has had a profound impact of how I tackle difficult, riffs, lines and patterns that have flubbed me up over the years. Listening is the most important factor in musical development and how you react and translate the music around you. Thanks so much for this video!!!

Man, when Jason mention "This Dying Soul", I went and listened to it and it is a jam! I don't know DT's whole catalog, but that's one of the better songs, that I have heard from them. I've been seeing Jason, playing around with different bands for some years now and from day one, I was impressed by his chops. I saw him with Born Of Osiris back in the metalcore days, pre 2012 - we had a solid metalcore scene in Flint, Mi in early 2000s and a lot of bands from the surrounding areas (like Chicago) would come through. I definitely saw Born of Osiris at Dirtfest 2007 - that was a lineup that'll never be done justice...The Black Dahlia Murder was there and they aren't even on the flyer (that can be found online)...there was metal, metalcore/post hardcore and emo/pop punk, but I digress. I've rambled on a bit about days of old but as far as modern extreme metal guitarists go, Jason Richardson is top-notch!

Jason grow up in my town Manassas Virginia… same place as Pete Evick of the Bret Michael’s band. The guitar teacher Jason mentioned ( Matthew Mills) is a total beast on guitar( check out KZbin) but has the perfect heart to be a guitar teacher. Jason has taken things to the next level

Very interesting interview! In particular, the "tendinitis" part was very enlightening for me : I experienced similar "wrist pain" issues at the beginning of this year, after "overpracticing" over the course of last year, and got very worried about my ability the practice guitar. As stated, being more careful about my hand position, I have managed to avoid it coming back for the last months. In particular, I switch to "classical position" (I was a "blues position" player so far) more often when playing more technical licks.

I have a similar experience with tendinitis - I developed it after playing for many hours a day for like 16 years and then, I got a job lifting heavy trees and shrubs off of semi-trucks and my fretting wrist, swelled up, so bad!! I've had trouble with tendinitis and carpel tunnel syndrome, ever since. It got so bad that I had trouble opening a bag of potato chips. I was considering surgery but it's not a given that it will fix it. I've settled for playing less and adjusting my playing technique. I, self-taught myself "classical form", back in the early 2000s, so I was always careful in that regard but lifting 100 pound maple trees, did me in lol. There's no way I am out of the game, though, as I have songs to write and record.

And as I have been typing on a computer keyboard several hours a day for fifteen years, which seems to be the root cause of my problems, i have to be particularly careful as I cannot afford neither not typing nor playing guitar anymore.

I loved what Kiko said about bumping, scratching and dammaging your guitar. You should not be afraid of injuring your guitar and not use it. It gives caracter to the tool, and as long you dont breake it, you should be fine

He say he spends a lot of time and he knows how everything works digitally and on the guitar and I reckon he’d even know how to tune it himself so what he has done which I haven’t heard yet is very intelligent and I believe smoking can contribute because he’s in such a relaxed State by smoking it’s simple for him to put it all together it’s hard to explain it’s clear to him because he’s relaxed and not right about anything and he can actually concentrate better because there’s no nerves and he can put it together everybody is different and I understand like I said everybody’s different look at Jimi Hendrix oh he was unbelievable if you know what I mean ha ha ha ha awesome love the interview

I start playing at 17 years old, i am 33, and i had everybody saying to me in the first two to three years that i should not always playing guitar, that i should practice in home and when good at guitar start playing in the street. Cause i would take my acoustic to everywhere, every day, i am prety sure that this people do not say this things to me like that today cause i nailed it (ego inflates), and that is the thing, there is no time for learning playing an instrument, you make your time and the time is always now. I do not know music theorie and i have no lessons so the only thing was my ear and youtube in early 2000. And i am prety happy from what i achieved with only that (ego inflates again and memorys start to rise).

i feel pretty close to what jason said in the beginning because currently i'm on the end of my second year of playing and at first i played around 3-4 hours a day until my fingers started becoming purple, i took a small break and right when i developped the tip of my fingers (i dont remember what its called) i got back to at least 2 hours a day and i didn't skip one unless i really couldn't, and then lik a month ago i discovered overflow by kiko, i learned it wrong first, then fixed it and now sometimes i catch myself playing it 5 or more times in a row, and now i picked up conquer or die, i still struggle a bit on the big stretch but it's exactly the same, i learn songs i wanna play by playing them and enjoying them as much as possible, even if it's incredibely hard. thanks for those vids kiko you're really my fav guitarist with tosin

I've had bad tendonitis which stopped me practicing guitar for years. However, weight training--especially bicep curls and reverse bicep curls with slow negatives, about 3-4 seconds--really pretty much sorted it, and I'm free to practice all the time now. A few sets--3-5--per exercise, of this type of weight training, 2-3 times per week, would be a good place to start for anyone reading this who has tendonitis and is feeling down because they've had to stop guitar. I sold my Ibanez Prestige in 2016 as I thought I'd never practice again. Don't let this happen to you.

Thank you Kiko for talking about tendinitis problem, from your videos i thought you take great of your body like doing gym, running etc that you would never have these issues, because i also had severe tendinits and i couldn't play the guitar for 3 years, after that i can now play but i still get a burning feeling afer a few minutes of playing, so i thought maybe it's because of some soft of vitamin deficiency in my body. I completely changed my playing technique and now i sit in the classical guitar style position, i do a little warm up before playing anything but it is still there. I would like to know how long did it take you to get your tendinitis fixed and is your hand fine now or you still sometime face this problem ? I am a righty but the tendinitis is on my left wrist. I think string guage, string action, thickness of the guitar neck also matters beside sitting posture and playing technique.

Prove that visualisation method can be used to practice guitar - try to imagine that you write something by your native hand without moving, then do the same thing but with other hand. It feels awkward despite you dont physically doing that :D

Hello kiko... And everyome.. I'm very heartbroken guitarist... Been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome right after getting my dream guitar... My question to kevin and anyone reading... You ever suffered /been afraid of guitar related injuries?? And what you done about it?

I had that, a doctor told me I had to be operated and there was a chance it would t work and if it did I had to practice less…I said screw that and went to a quiropractor and it was preety much fixed. And that was prior to me filming a perpetual burn cover. Investigate how Mustaine dealed with his arm injury, thats what I did and how I came to the quiropractor. Dont panic or lose hope

I’ve never had any guitar related injuries but just take good care of your hand and try to get some muscle therapy on it. But idk I’m not a doctor. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I use a medical PEMF device called a Bemer. It's helped me a lot with some health issues. I suggest you look into that therapy.

@@AlejandroRasmussen7 He was diagnosed with radial neuropathy, also known as Saturday Night Palsy, which left him unable to grasp or even make a fist with his left hand.. I couldn't imagine having to deal with or overcome that kind of issue. I have some issues with CT myself but have never went to the Dr over it. Good luck ans don't give up my friend..

I don't know if this will help but I've seen wrist sleeves/bands for tendonitis and carpal tunnel online. You could try that out? I guess it won't 'cure' your problem but it should help you maintain proper form while playing. I have a bad wrist too (picking hand) but fortunately it isn't so bad that it affects my playing. I just can't put a lot of weight on it.

Ive been playing for like 20 plus years but never took lessons all self taught and i feel like im good, but if any lesson taught guitar player saw my technique im thinking they would either laugh at me or tell me to just give up been playing wrong for too long. What im getting at is i can play some of those wicked fast riffs but in a very unorthodox way and im 35 in a couple weeks, should i just keep going on my path or straight up get into some lessons and learn a entirely new way to play, or am i considered a geezer by now in guitar years. Seriously asking Jason cause were like the same age and flat out your incredibly good, so why ask anyone else.

And I’ve also learnt playing along with Megadeth that just don’t stop like you gotta stop and practice a little bit and try and get it if you don’t move on you might get the next bit and then come back to it the more pets you learn he pick up checks and on the way like meeting ha ha and I’ve noticed they mute with both hands I kinda muted with my throat board hand but a lot differently and I watch the right way and I work hard at it I’ve been doing it all wrong way but I still give it ago or gave it ago I do you have to change it at least I had some idea and that’s better than none at all
