My old catch coach would always ankle lock and neck crank me. I learned soo much when I went to a bjj school later they were pissed cause I would neck crank and ankle lock annd heel hook higher belts. They would get me of course but if I got them it was an ankle lock that I remembered from my coach.

Nobbleykyle, you've got to remember where some of these techniques come from. In Catch Wrestling you can just as easily lose by pin fall. So the energy is going to be such that the guy in defense position will be fighting to not be rolled over. Yes you could go for guard and this will nullify the move in say MMA or sub wrestling, but in CACC you've just given up a pin. Great question.

This man is an utter legend. Do you guys sell his book "Physical Chess?" Also, I was wondering what his opinion on Judo is? I love both these styles. I know he is good friends with Gene Labell. I agree, like Mr. Robinson, that the Olympics are killing Judo because of the lack of submission time it allows. Heard him on a podcast, and could have listened to him all day.

Even in mma with the guard those toe holds can work, you can keep someone from pulling guard while going for a toe hold from quarters if you use your weight right. And even if you do pull guard they still will have control of a leg and probably be able to pass.

@TakingItToTheMMAT yeah you guys have my support 100%. I've always wanted to learn catch wrestling one way or another! Since I don't live in America but in the UK so the closest to catch wrestling we have here is greco roman. I had a look on amazon for 'Say Uncle' and had a 'look inside' the book, although a preview of part 3 'techniques' wasn't available, i was wondering if that section would teach me a lot more techniques from catch wrestling and allow me to use it in my grappling game

Is the book still available?
@ptothej10011 жыл бұрын
It's a completely different concept, skill set and motivation. UFC favors aggression, quickly gaining control and finishing. 5 min rounds with rules etc. Catch wrestling favors closing the distance, keeping your weight on your opponent and having the skill and patience to work your way into position. It's not a matter of getting a particular submission. Its a matter of locking in when the joint, limb is available. Once it's hooked in, the last thing you would think about is gaining guard.
@Nobbleykyle12 жыл бұрын
I don't understand how these holds would work. I do MMA. I train Karate, Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling and I understand like if someone try's these holds on me what is to stop me from just pulling guard to defend?
@timothystewart72736 жыл бұрын
how do you stop him from rolling out or going for his own tow hold?
@antitankgunguy31924 жыл бұрын
Late reply (and I'm no expert), but I think they definitely could roll out, but the move is meant to be done at such a high tempo as to mitigate the chances of rolling out. Once your ankle is cranked, there isn't a lot of time to attempt an escape before the crank has gone too far and you end up with permanent damage. I'd love to hear some alternate views on this so feel free to criticize or follow up with some feedback.
@THIS---GUY3 жыл бұрын
@@antitankgunguy3192 you could be mean and step over the far leg so if they roll they get stuck inverted lol that way they can watch the submission front row

theres catch in england in several places.In bolton ,wigan,in manchester and surounding areas,there are probably more i dont know about,its rare though.Greco is absolutely nothing like catch and greco is extremely small in britain,almost non existant.Freestyle wrestling is catch without the subs and if you add no gi bjj youll have something very close to catch but without the emphasis on leglocks and neckcranks but youll have a better bottom game.
@chriszaun467511 жыл бұрын
catch wrestling is more realistic then bjj,you dont want go to the guard on the street
@peterpaul93756 жыл бұрын
when you face an opponent that outweighs you by 100 lbs in a streetfight you will always be on your back on the ground whether you want to or not. you will never stay on top. he will just turn you over or bench press you off. Catch wrestling with the bjj guard would be a great combo

If you try and roll back to guard while this hold is in effect, you end up breaking your own ankle or snapping your knee. If the guy kicks out and tries to roll to guard, any decent grappler will put his knees in straight away and kills the hips. For any grappler in any stipulation of grappling this is a bad place to be in.
@peterpaul93758 жыл бұрын
strange. you go for the submission without controlling the body first. in bjj first you control the torso then you go for the submission
@theodorewurz84248 жыл бұрын
+Peter Paul It's a different kind of control, but control none the less. Every hold that exists in Catch as Catch Can exists in BJJ, what is different is the tempo, angles of attack etc. Catch as Catch Can is wrestling first and foremost, so as in folkstyle or freestyle (which are basically CACC minus the submissions), you control the body by taking a hold, for example of the head, or the wrist. Here, the wrestler controls the leg and applies the submission, if it is defended, there will be a scramble and this will likely result in attacking with more submissions. Also keep in mind that a CACC match can be won by pinfall, that changes the submissions used a bit. But my point here is that they are controlling the body, its just done differently than BJJ.
@peterpaul93756 жыл бұрын
+Theodore Wurz not bad. where can i learn this stuff?
@SwordTune5 жыл бұрын
@@peterpaul9375 England is it's birthplace. There are MMA gyms and instructors in the US who can train you if you join them. If you're looking for a smaller venue, I'm not sure where exactly trainers are located, but a quick Google search in your local area might find out. Look for CACC or Catch Wrestling.
@mishaaskar33232 жыл бұрын
Well there is control but using a different method... For BJJ its position before submission... In Catch, Pain and pressure is king. Where you can produce it to cause them to flinch or behave, you control them even if they didn't want to. You attack their baser instinct. Example, when the person goes on all four to turtle, in BJJ, this is frowned upon because of the rear naked choke, but Catch's solution to someone trying to slap on the rear naked Choke on them while in turtle guard is to literally create a pike and let the guy backpacking slip further down the slope until his grip is basicly to keep from falling or he let's go and has to attack again... Other ways catch wrestlers gets rid of a rear naked Form the turtle is attack the leg by forcing an ankle lock by pulling on to the foot to the side and grinding the wrist or elbow into the ankle of shin until the pain makes them let go, even applying a toehold. So in this case... The hand driving all the way up between the legs until the side of the fist it along the asscrack makes the defending person feel they are about to be thrown so they double down on their weight to the floor, not knowing it was to have the hand ready to grab a twisting foot for the toehold... Its very brutal stuff, honestly... But it gives a very big insight on how Gentle Jujitsu is compared to Catch whose main intent is to mangle the part it attacks.

@SpecialK668511 жыл бұрын
The fact you would tap first. Honestly, how would you pull guard from the first toe hold shown?. This is wrestling based, not butt scooting (BJJ) based. I had (many years ago, when it mattered), a blue belt in BJJ, and a wrestling background. CACC lent itself to my skill set (wrestling), more than BJJ. A tap is a tap in the end. Find the path that best suits you to that end.

Honestly, Brazilian Ju Jitsu and Catch Wrestling would be considered boring by UFC standards, but to say that the concepts wouldn't apply is just ignorant.
@shikat237111 жыл бұрын
Nowadays, all the wrestler can do is to give his opponent a slap on the face or a kick or a shove to the face or body using his other foot to break the hold. But in Frank Gotch's day, it was illegal to slap your opponent, even though Gotch was a dirty wrestler himself.
