Hey Jake, Tom White here. You may not remember me, but we met in the spring 2007 at the Florida Parelli Center back when Jessie, Don, Rachel, and Kristy where teaching. I was usually with Sam Caporn riding the unicycle around campus. Nice seeing that you're doing well. Keep up the good work. Great info, your thoughts on transitioning from rope halter to 1/2 basal is what I've found works best as well. Some horses get a comfort snaffle in between. I follow Buck Brannaman and that's his process. Then from half inch bosel into the two rein seems to work for me. Another thing that helps is, after a lesson with a horse I'll tie them to a picket line, so they can't drop their head too far, with a spade bit or halfbreed mouthpiece without reins to get them comfortable with it without me distracting them. They can play with it and learn how to carry it. In my experience this has worked very well and I wish I'd done it sooner. Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and it's good to see you on KZbin.

Thank for explaining the levage and spade bits. I never understood how the spade worked. I don't care for the 2 piece snaffle because of how harsh they can be on the mouth. I usually use a multi piece snaffle. But a wise horseman once told me that any bit is only as harsh as the hands that are using it.

Just found your channel and I really enjoy your content and education style. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. Its refreshing to see such a simple, straight forward tack selection. I am working to transition my 6yo gelding quarter horse to the bridle this summer (not a spade bit). If you were making a bridle horse but weren't taking them all the way to the spade what would be your ideal cheek and mouth piece? I saw the san juaquin mouth in the background but you also mentioned that you aren't a fan of toungue relief. Just curious if you have time to answer. In regards to the snaffle I have been using Pat Puckett's Missing Link Snaffle and have really enjoyed it. Seems like a bit you might be interested in? best, Dan

I’ll have to look it up. Personally I love a Santa Barbara for the look, and it keeps them from getting the cheek in their mouth if they are playful like that. The vaquero mouth piece I think it’s called from Jeremiah Watt is really nice. I like getting horses used to a leverage but with a basic comfort snaffle mouth piece and little shank that myler sells. I just got one that’s the same just nicer from Tom Balding. I just shared a pic on my instagram. Mona Lisa can be one horses like a lot too.

His bits seem like the perfect blend of quality and affordability with lots of cheek and mouth piece options. I've had my eye on his Nevada Half breed mouth piece but I will need to look into the vaquero mouth. I have my 12 y/o still somewhat green broke in the same myler. He likes that bit however sometimes i feel he is pushing thru or not getting a clear signal (counter bending or not staying on the rail). Would using slobber straps help? Myler said to try a correction bit but i only see most w shanks

The counter bending and not staying on the rail is more of a picture into the mind versus miscommunication with the bit. The bit could cause the miscommunication, but I’d put my energy into making sure the release of your pressure is when the horse is on the rail or the nose is to the inside or when the softness you want is there. Also using your legs to support the bit is a big part of helping the softness be there.

@@peartreeranch I’m going to keep added it just seems like when I give him the release weather at a walk or a trot after he stayed on the rail for a little bit he sometimes falls in and it’s nowhere near the gate so I don’t know why he does it

Typically how long will it take a smart horse with an Intelligent rider to get from Hakamore too well Balanced spade bit ,?

Depends on age of the horse, for mouth development, but it’s a few year process to get to a straight up bridle horse. A lot of times people say a year in each stage, hackamore, two rein then straight up in the bridle.
