Talking With my Cycling Coach About Managing Collarbone Surgery Recovery

I just broke my collarbone and am recovering from surgery. Regardless, I am still heading to Sea Otter Classic But my plans and goals and training regiment are all up in the air.
So I called my coach. This is what our conversations look like. You'll see the kind of things we talk about and the tips my coach gives me on approaching fall training and cycling workouts with an injury.
(TrainingPeaks' Coach Matching paired me with cycling coach, Joy McCulloch earlier this year. No matter what feat I've taken on (from Race Across America, to tacking the USA Crits criterium scene, to road racing and gravel cycling events like Big Red and SBT GRVL... Joy's had great advice to give me, beyond just the traditional cycling training plan. )
After breaking my collarbone (unexpectedly, of course) Joy sat down with me and talked me through how to approach the next few weeks as I recovery from collarbone surgery. (I had a metal plate drilled into my collarbone by an orthopedic surgeon just days ago, to help the fracture of my distal clavicle heal). Joy goes through some of the activities that I can do, and normalizes the process of sitting on the sidelines during this period. I feel a lot better after this discussion.
A great coach is like Joy, and will help you through more than just what you need to do on the bike. They help you with your global health, and approach to training. Check out TrainingPeaks coach match service on their homepage to get connected with a coach who fits you perfectly too.

I broke my collarbone a few weeks ago and had it plated 2 days ago. Bad timing as I have the world age group champs triathlon in 12wks time. This video has helped me lots! Thanks

You are doing great. Honestly, I know this sucks for you but with your break being an upper extremity, you are able to get up and go for a walk and get outside and do all the things your trainer talked about in the first half of the video. So much better for your mental state than if you were recliner bound with a leg break. Hang in there Lex from what I see you are doing gnarly 😊

I think you made a good decision to go with a surgery. My broken clavicle healed naturally. So the break did not mend in perfect alignment. It causes me some interference with muscle or ligament when throwing a baseball or football overhand. I've suffered with aches and pain for over 20 years in that area. Fortunately when we moved to our new home with a swimming pool it just so happens that I haven't had those issues with pain or mobility. I'm guessing because of swimming around the pool has helped with finally rehabbing the shoulder. Honestly I hadn't considered the improvement until watching your video.💡 😂

@@Dipak_Nandeshwar Yeh, the swimming did the trick. I've been throwing the baseball and football no problems or pain. I have even been doing a little boxing training hitting the bag and stuff. Rotating the shoulder though swimming gave me my shoulder movement back! Broke my clavicle when I was 38 yrs old. I'm now 64

How quickly after surgery were you able to ride real bicycle again? How much range of motion were you able to get to with staples? Thank you! I have surgery 9/8/23

Hey! How are you doing? I just had surgery on 9-14. I’m still in some pain similar to when I had the break. How’s your recovery going?

@@IFC97 hello! I'm doing great! I was definitely tired the first week and somewhat in pain. Pain pill made me feel horrible so I only took dual action Advil day 2 of surgery for a week then nothing. I was back to walking and light leg workouts my 2nd week. Today is day 12. I worked out legs at the gym for 2 hours. Not as heavy as pre break of course and walked for 4 hours (slow but still.😊) a little discomfort at times at the end of walk but considering, I'm happy. I get staples out Friday. Hopefully they x-ray. I will let you know how it goes. Keep me posted on your progress too!

@@mcnamee901 thanks for your reply! The pain pills are starting to get to me. I feel sick to my stomach today. I’m still having a lot of discomfort in my neck area, but I’m not sure if that is from the surgery or from my accident which caused the broken clavicle. I’m still feeling better than I did during week one. I go back in two weeks. Hopefully they do an x-ray. I’m really looking forward to sleeping on my back again.
