► Featured - Simple Steps To Slapping: bit.ly/2qjhWLV
==============================================
This week I'm answering a request for the slap riff from the song Can't Stop by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. This riff by Flea is fairly straightforward as long as you've got a good grasp of playing ghost notes.
Ghost Notes are those little dead notes you hear in funky riffs that sound useless on their own but they loads of momentum to the groove when applied to a line.
If you want to learn more about Slapping just check out the Simple Steps To Slap Bass course over at Talkingbass.net. I cover everything from the absolute basics all the way through to advanced techniques like Double Thumping: bit.ly/2qjhWLV

Good concise and easy to understand lesson Mark.Quite an easy slap line if you've mastered those muting and ghost note techniques, although for beginners and I've been there, you think how on earth can I ever play that. I think you've previously mentioned you would do a similar breakdown for aeroplane by chilli peppers which has similarities to this one. Any chance you'll have some time to do it soon? Cheers

Ghost notes are so hard. Its so tough to keep rhythm for me. Probably just because it's new and I have to think about it way too much. I like how Mark pointed out using the fretting hand to make most of those ghost.notes, it's helped a ton but I still get super hung up every time I see one.

Take this with an ENORMOUS grain of salt, as I am an on and off bass player with beginner experience and am not well versed, but from everything I’ve seen of RHCP videos, and bass players in general, I have never seen anyone use their pinky, and for this song I’m certain you only use a strong down strok of the thumb and then a pull from behind the string with your index finger.

I always loved bass. iam thinking about buying one, is a fender squier affinity a good one for beginners? And what amp should i get?
@lukaswalczak93
@lukaswalczak93 7 жыл бұрын
Egor Yildirim Even If you just want to get started I cant recommend a Fender Jazz or Precision Bass enough. Those Squier Basses are not worth the money because original Fender ones are so much better and you"ll have much more fun with them. If 600-800$ is too much you can take a look at BassTheWorld.com here on KZbin. One of the last Videos was about a new Sire Bass which is about 450$. I would check this one out. Also Yamaha TRBx Basses or G&L Basses or some Sandberg Basses (like the Electra Vs4) are really good for the money. And it is not the Amp making the great sound, it mostly depends on your Skills and especially the Bass you play. Thats why I cant recommend the original Fender ones enough! Warwick, EBS, Hartke or Markbass make really high quality amps! I hope this will help you! Cheers
@talkingbasslessons
@talkingbasslessons 7 жыл бұрын
If you're going to go for a Squier, go for the Vintage Mod or Classic Vibe models. I've only tried one Affinity and it wasn't very good. But I've got a couple of Vintage Mod's kicking about. As a beginner, the amp make is really not that important. Just go for something affordable.

I agree with Scavengerx3 for the most part, however the Vintage Mod that +TalkingBass mentioned is the exception. I will put the tone of the Vintage Modified J-Bass up against basses twice the price. It is a solid bass for about $350us. I used one for 6 years, only modification I made was a high mass bridge. I only made it my backup bass when I finally found the perfect P-bass for me.

Huge beginner here, what amp settings can you recomend?
@mr.wunderful4361
@mr.wunderful4361 7 жыл бұрын
Shimmy Shazmart turn the volume on your bass all the way up. Set your tone control knobs on the bass flat like "12 o'clock". That depends on what type of control knobs you have. Set the gain on your amp between nine and 10 o'clock. Set your treble at about 1 o'clock, high mids at about 1 o'clock, low mids between 11 and 12 o'clock. Set The bass between 12 and 1 o'clock. Control your master volume as desired or needed. That should give you a basic setting for your amp. If you like that tone and decide to join a band and "play out," turn your high mids to about 2 o'clock so that you won't get drowned out in the mix. You can then use the tone control knobs on your instrument to add or cut tone as desired. Just my opinion.
