By the Math numbers though, the vast vast majority of firearms-owners are safe and law abiding. High end estimates somewhere around 500 million guns in the USA. An average of around 50,000 firearms deaths per year. That works out to about 0.0001 of existing guns being the problem. Even that 0.0001 number is probably to high as it assumes "1 death per gun", which we all known isn't true. Also of that 50,000 firearms deaths per year, roughly 60% of them are suicides. I'm not a gun-owner and I would gladly support more regulations, but simultaneously as a science and evidence-based person, I think we should be cautious to not assume "more regulations" is going to magically move the needle on that 0.0001 (that small number of people who mis-use firearms, probably are not the type to follow regulations in the first place)
@jackkomisar458Ай бұрын
@@jasonnugent963 The burden of following the law is not on the gun buyer. It is on the gun dealer. If dealers fail to conduct the required background checks on gun buyers, they can lose their licenses.
@jasonnugent963Ай бұрын
@@jackkomisar458 Sure,.. but there have been cases of people cleanly passing all necessary checks to buy firearms,. and then going on to commit crimes. That's what makes solving for the 0.0001 so hard. Defenders have to defend every possible way something could go wrong. Attackers only need to find 1 way that works. In that kind of scenario,. Defenders are always at a disadvantage. ;\

Hey there! I have AR-15s in five calibers, two of which I built from the lower receiver up, and I am definitely voting for Kamala Harris. I'm a 65-year-old retired Marine and I've been shooting for more than fifty years, over forty of those years with M16s or AR-15s. My guns stay locked up in safes when I'm not taking them to the range or cleaning them, and the ammo is locked in different safes. I've managed to make it this far in life without ever shooting a living thing, and I don't think I'm a threat to anyone - my main reason for owning guns, including the ARs, is for target shooting. I like AR-15s because I'm used to their ergonomics and they can be customized so many ways. I am going to vote for Kamala Harris because Trump, Vance, and Project 2025 are a giant threat to the Constitution I am sworn for life to defend; also because I support women's right to abortion, I dislike racism and discrimination, I am a feminist (my wife says I am, anyway), I care about the environment, I support education, I care about freedom of speech and oppose censorship, I support the separation of church and state, and I am thinking about what kind of country and world I want for my children, grandchildren, and (one so far) great-grandchildren.

The republican party has for decades catered to white America, The fact that trump dragged them out of the closet into daylight is the only thing trump has been truthful about. They got a bit lost on the firearms conversation. I would be called a 'gun nut' by their definition. I will be a three time non-Trump voter this election and I'm voting Blue up and down the ballot. Stop stereotyping gun owners who own more than your own 'approved' number of guns. We are no more the same than most other arbitrary groups. These opinions are one of the reasons Democrats have driven moderate gun owners to the GOP; judgment and opinionism.
@judyhawkins6584Ай бұрын
Donald Trump and empathy: he's a great storyteller, and one of his best stories for his base is he's a f-up, he isn't always the best with the English language, but when he's on a tear telling a good story it's a good story and good stories don't have to be true, they just have to ring true like in a round-the-fire late at night after a lot of beers with your good old friends and family. And he draws empathy from his base, the folks I know who'd never let him down feel like he'd never let them down either, they feel a lot like him, and they feel just as ill-served by all the people he complains about having served him ill, and that's the empathetic bond. And as good as the film From Russia with Lev was in my (highly educated and literate) view, I sat through it seeing all the markers of educated contempt for anyone who is of the ilk of the DJT base, and that contempt, which showed in Kamala Harris's demeanor towards Trump, as much as commentators want to cast it as anything other than contempt, that contempt reaches out through the empathetic bond his base has with them and feels like contempt for them. Contempt kills relationships, it turns people away. I get to hear from DJT base folks because I don't have contempt or pity for them, I have longstanding friendships that contain my awareness of just how poorly our education system has served them -- they didn't get my silver spoon that had me reading ahead of my grade in an elite school from age four -- and how being one or more down educationally leaves you stuck with the cruddy jobs that don't lead to "a future" for oneself or one's kids. You can't be having contempt for the people you want to win over. Democrats in general come across as educationally one-up that don't give a flying potato for the educationally one-down.
