As a native Portuguese speaker who has spent the last 59 years living in Canada, I love your channel. I use it for practice and as a refresher. Two things that stood out - 1) I never knew how to pronounce the letter J. Somehow never came up. But now I know it is Jota. Thank you. And 2 - I grew up thinking Y was pronounced “I grego” or Greek I in English. Ever heard of that? Love your channel!

"I griega" and "i grec" is what they call it in Spanish and French. I've never seen anyone calling it anything other the ipsilon in Portuguese.

Funny thing "Zebra" comes from the Portuguese Zebro (male)- we still have these names, like "Vale do Zebro"; zibreira (I think). It was an Iberian animal that got extinct in 1500's very similar to the African donkey, so the Portuguese when they saw zebras in Africa call it by the same name... zebras. In Latin it's a completly different name: hipotigris (horse+tigre)

Thank you 🙏 very much dear Liz. Muito obrigada 🙏, querida Liz. Another lession learned. You have helped me again to take another small step forward. Even at the same time, I'm learning Portuguese and English with you. Did I have already told you that you have such a lovely British accent? In German, the letter I is pronounced in the same way as in Portuguese. Y is also spelt Ypsilon. Funny, R de Rato. In German it would be called rats. Like the "Boomtown Rats". Which of course has nothing to do with mice. But bad blond boy builds bridges. In his mind, of course. Keep up with your fantastic good work. Saudacoes e um Servus da 🤍💙 Baviera.

It just occurred to me with your, "O de Olá," when I heard people in Portugal say Olâ, the stress was on the first syllable O, not the A, which has the accent. I regularly heard what sounded like óla more than olá.

@@TalktheStreets Portugal has a long history with cod fishing side by side with Northern Norway. They traded with us back in the day and had ships arriving to trade and get Cod fish. To this day they import Norwegian Cod. Going on a trip to Portugal soon. Can`t wait to soak in the history and culture about the sea that they have.
