What made Tom and Erica's performances as Clark and Lois so great was not just that it added a new element to the show, there was also a sense of comfortable familiarity about them. From the moment they did their first scenes together, they played Lois & Clark so effortlessly, it was like they were picking up where Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher had left off a decade earlier. Tom and Erica didn't need to learn how to be Lois and Clark, they just clicked and went right into Lois & Clark mode as if they'd already been doing this for ten years. When you saw them in season 4 after Erica joined Smallville, you were like, 'Oh my God, it's Lois & Clark! They're back!"

Both were AB-SO-LUTE-LY STUNNING in their own right then, and both are still INCREDIBLY STUNNING now, but with the bonus of actually experiencing their true every day personality and sense of humour... This is why seasons 8-10 are my favorite (although really, Lois and Clark's relationship journey started from season 4 and onwards.) Erica and Tom did an outstanding job of portraying Lois and Clark in the Smallville universe. They never had Lois be a part of Clark's life at a younger age before, and Smallville handled that unique journey to eventual romance so well. Not that there weren't a couple story arcs that I didnt like, but mostly I can't say enough good things. "Crimson" is my favorite Red K episode, ever. For SO many reasons. 😁❤️👍 I was actually wondering if that's how they approached all the kissing scenes, make-out scenes, even the one love scene in season 10... choreographed, like a dance, that's one reason it looked so good on camera, and why the chemistry and emotions of the characters could be felt through the screen. It was so believeable and very well done. I liked the many points brought up in this snippet of the podcast. Were there any closed sets? I wondered about that too. Oh, and Erica, I know what you mean about being over 40...you are too funny and down to earth, but you are gorgeous inside and out! ❤️

​@@explorer96core73 Smallville is kind of its own thing when it comes to Superman lore timelines. It resolves everything to stick with main lore of Superman by the end of the show though. According to lore, should Lois have been there early? No. But should Lana have stayed as long as she did? No. Should Lex be in Smallville and friends with Clark? No. Not to mention all the other Superman lore characters, villains, and heroes Clark meets before he's even Superman, which also breaks lore. Its just how the show works, so Lois coming early works as well because of all the other characters coming early, staying longer, or not even existing in the lore. I agree that both ladies did great with Lois and Lana! They both added so much to the show, had great chemistry with Tom and others, and were great actresses! I would disagree about Clana's chemistry being better than Clois. They both were amazing in their own ways, which I think is evident to why we such strong fan bases for both. But, Clark and Lois were always meant to happen and be end game, and it is something the show signaled at many times since season 4. Even Lana had commented on it. Also, Clark could have used blue kryptonite to be with Lana, and he could take it off when he went to save people. But Clana was always meant to fail as a fully healthy couple. Inexperience of youth and past trauma plays into this some, but also they had false ideals of each other and a lack of trust which come into full play in season 7, and even season 8. Lana's dark path, her lies, the bizarro situation, among some things also highlight why they don't work well together. They show has signaled way back, multiple times, that Clana weren't going to work out due to their issues as a couple. Clois on the other hand show how a couple can bring out the best in each other, be a full support, and thrive. We see this especially in Season 10 when all secrets are out. They also have this magical light and joy with each other, as well as passion, and one can see their complete chemistry and pull to the other. It really is a beautiful relationship that they form, one that isn't held back by individual issues, but instead raises both of them up as individuals and as a couple. Both couples were great in their times, but if you're looking for couple goals, its Lois and Clark for sure!

Lois and Lana are really metaphors for Clark's two sides: the ordinary human (Lana), where he's always kinda ill at ease because he has to tamper down on a large part of what he is, or the hero (Lois), where he can really live out his personality to the fullest, even though it is a handful to deal with. That's why Lana is always in earth tones, and Lois and Clark are routinely dressed in red and blue.

Im not sure about the colors (you might be right and i just didn’t pick up on it), but I completely agree with your assessment of Lana/Lois and the impact they have on Clark. “ill at ease” is exactly how I would describe Lana and Clark’s dynamic. To me their scenes always felt like the two of them were speaking different dialects and having to work really hard to understand each other whereas Lois and Clark were speaking the same language and on the same page from day one.

@joelmontague5004 Yes, that's also a good way of putting it, they speak the same language. Lois innately understands his warrior side, almost better than he does, because she shares it. Her character is often used simply to highlight him taking a step forward in his development as a warrior. Think of S6, I think the episode is called Combat, where he cage fights with Kane. Lois has no function in that episode as a character, she simply shows up dressed in red (hero colour), gets ogled by Clark, proves her loyalty to him, and is knocked out. She's 100% symbol in that one, 0% character. For Clark, that episode is a big step towards becoming superman, as he learns he enjoys fighting, but doesn't want to kill. This happens quite a lot with Lois, that she's not a character, but a symbol, which sometimes makes her a bit boring to watch, I wish they'd given her more to do outside of her relationship with Clark. She is a well constructed, interesting character, and it would've been cool to actually see her as a reporter, facing more complex challenges. The clothes you'll notice when you rewatch. Aqua for example. Lois shows up in a red bikini while Clark wears blue swim trunks, she then proceeds to have a flirt with the hero who already accepted his destiny, Aquaman, then dreams of finding her own hero, dressed in blue next to Clark in a red T-shirt. But this happens throughout, even later at the DP, Lois often wears burgundy, and Clark's dress clothes are shades of blue. Lana also often wears black when she's meant to be sexy, symbolising destructive sexuality, Lois red, symbolising fertile sexuality.

I saw you comment a few weaks ago and i honestly thought you were crazy lol. But you're absolutely right. Man, almost every scene they match colors. When Clark is wearing red, Lois is wearing blue and vice versa, sometimes they both would be wearing blue or red and colors among that tones, orange, pink...it's really something lol. When she first appears on the show Clark is wearing his classic red and blue outfit and Lois is with a jacket that is red/orange, when they become oficially friends clark is again with his classic outfit and she is with a red shirt. When he is saying someday she is gonna find out someone nice, his red shirt and her blue one are very vivid, and they're both with no jackets or coats this time, so we can clearly see it(i think that also meant that they felt more comfortable with each other,without cover ups). When they first kiss he is wearing the arrow costume but she is wearing red again,under the jacket. Anyway, there are a bunch of other scenes, almost every one they shared and it happenned to many times for me to think it was a coincidence or simply that they didn't have other outfits lol. Cause you see the other characters in other colors, so i think it was on purpose. And what confirmed that for me was that in crisis they repeated it, having him wearing a red coat and she a blue one❤💙 So yeah, i think it's safe to say it's true.😅

@@claricesilva2700 That happens to me depressingly often that people think I'm crazy, only to later realise I'm not. 🤣🤣🤣 Also interesting costume detail: when they first meet, Lois dresses Clark in a red cape (blanket). This also happens at the beginning of the show, where after the bridge accident, Lex and Clark sit next to one another, both swathed in red capes (blankets). Then Jonathan comes along, and covers Clark's red cape with his brown work jacket, symbolising how his earthy protectiveness is holding Clark back from seizing his destiny, which obviously is a major theme of early Smallville. It's one of the blessings of binge watching that these patterns and repeats are easier to recognise.

@@floodgates182 That also happens to me cause normally i tend to read to much into shows cause i'm a writer but i didn't think Smallville would do that to be honest, not that these stuff is SO complex and all, but i didn't think they had that level of continuity and just self awareness of what the show should be about, maybe i have a little prejudice against smallville because of some choices they made in regards to the superman myth but i guess i shouldn't judge EVERYTHING lol. But in one thing i will "defend" them i guess...Maybe they did those little color details in regards to Lois because since they couldn't have her permanently on the show because they didn't have the rights to Lois Lane character, they did what they could with the little time and that included the colors. Idk,maybe i'm reaching but yeah...

If you got bored with Clark and Lana you clearly lack the ability to receive a great love story with incredible CHEMISTRY between to star crossed lovers. Like I said on the other page, Erica was exactly the spark plug that Tom needed so badly. She's a literal goddess and looked amazing alongside Tom- real badass woman. Lois changed his character for the best. That's why Clark and Lois are such a power couple. I didn't even know anything about Superman and Lois and I knew when Lois showed up she was going to be endgame bc Tom's whole energy changed and he finally had the spark in his eyes like he finally met his match. I used to really want a continuation or movie with Welling as Superman but I'm kind of happy to leave it where it ended. I don't count the arrowverse cameo either since it was stupid.

As painful as it was i already had already to come to terms with the fact that lana was no longer part of the cast when I started watching season 8 so I m also wondering how they writer are going to tie all up. What I never saw coming wasa the fact that Kara and Lex luthor, my favorite villain, also left the show. so I hope clark, Lois, Cloe and Oliver queen don't leave the show It would be rubbing salt into the wound

This Lois Lane was the best because She was probably the only character on the show that was never needed to be saved, held her own when dating other Super Beings... and always got Superman's back all throughout

I love Erica Durance/Lois. She is in my opinion the best to ever play the role in movie/tv. She has aged like fine wine. I'm in my 40's now and I'd still ask her to take her clothes off. Lol. j/k. she really looks wonderful.

Lois definitely seemed more sexualized as she went on, but honestly Lois to me was always a shameless character. She said and did whatever she felt like and didn’t give a fuck who cared. Lois shamelessly flaunting what she’s got without a care in the world seems totally in character. It’s not really necessary but it’s not distracting. Also Erica really sells the hell out of this character.

Have shows nowadays get their stuff together before they shoot everything. Instead of getting all excited like back in the olden days they just tell you what to do and then you'd act it out and it's a rush situation to get the episodes out.

apparently that entirely depends on the show, diff sets & writing groups are still a mix, with some just being as chaotic as ever, actors consider it lucky to get one that is truly well-planned & easy-paced 🌠
