As part of the East African Railway Master Plan, Tanzania is connected to the neighboring nations of Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi by the Tanzania Standard Gauge Railway, which is currently under construction and partially operational. From there, it connects to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The outdated, ineffective metre-gauge railway system is to be replaced with the modern, electrified standard gauge railway (SGR).
