Tommy Rad, sent us some BALLISTIC PRODUCTS "Thug Slugs". These are 1oz, and are sold to hand loaders. (folks that re-load their own ammo)
The wadding stays attached to the lead slug in flight and helps to keep the slug flying straight through the air. While these slugs may look very similar to the Brenneke slugs, the results were quite different. However, each slug has its own application so if are looking for something with low over-penetration, this might be the slug for you.

There's a common misconception that higher penetration means better stopping power. In fact the reverse is true. You want the projectile to dump all its kinetic energy into the target, causing cavitation. This is why hollow points are so effective against unarmored flesh.

Some hollow points penetrate more than others and with a freakin shotgun slug it really doesn't matter

doesn't surprise me about the Brenneke slugs as they are designed for deep penetration on large dangerous animals. these slugs would be very good for predators of the two legged kind. IMHO

+darangemaster1 way too much over penetration - unless you want to stop a on speeding car full of thugs. And even then you might get plenty of over penetration out of these Brennekes.

Well you mostly find thugs in a city. Over penetration is a bad thing in a city. Its best if the projectile does not leave what it was fired at. If it misses then it wont bounce off a brick wall and wipe out some kid. Nor is it likely to slice through an old wood row house and into the one next door. That is a round I would feel ok with using in a urban environment.

HortonKansas Yes it is called Methamphetamine. It does not get rid of vermin as quick as the Thug Slug. However I think a Thug slug would also appropriately deal with a meth dealer as well as it would deal with a gang member. Of course lets not forget the sub humans that sell heroin. The Thug Slug would solve the problem of those vermin also.

I have used the Thug Slug extensively. I use a Mossberg 695 bolt gun rifled barrel. I copied data from Hubel’s “12 gauge Shotgun from Hell” series (posted on just about every shooting forum on the Internet). The slug is loaded into Rocky Mt Cartridge Co. lathe turned brass hulls. The powder load was 80 grains of IMR 4759. I have not chrono’d this load. According to Hubel, whose testing is extensive, this is a safe load...within normal pressures for a shotgun slug. Very accurate out to 100 yards, the farthest that I have shot it. Have also tried 40 grains of Steel.

Could you maby mold a WHISTLE into a wax slug and shoot it out on a field, so that it flies as long as it can? I guess it won't sound anything because of the pressure waves in front of it, but maby? If it did in fact work that could be awesome!

It's an expansion tank. When you heat water it expands and the tank is designed to take that extra pressure off your water piping system so the t&p valve on your water heater doesn't keep dumping

I suggest putting a sandbag on the block of wood and resting the fore end of the shotgun on the sandbag. This would protect the barrel of the shotgun and raise the shotgun which make it a more comfortable shooting position.

I've used what you call "thug slugs" few years ago. Bought them from Italy (they advertised them as "deer slug" due to less penetration and soft lead) and load them with 2,3 grams Unique in a fiocchi cartridge with a 616 primer and the result was..perfect. A very accurate slug up to 80 meters. I shot a roe deer in a distance of 90 meters and the 27 kgs male collapsed in the spot. For me it is a great slug unless you want to shoot brickwalls or steel doors.

the reason why the slug broke apart so easily is because it's a hollow point. the fact that it's a softer lead may have a factor but I'm positive it's mostly due to the fact that it's a hollow point. and as we all know hollow points are absolutely terrible at penetrating armor. the other slugs you mentioned are not hollow points so that is a huge difference between the two.

You can easily figure out the exact average ft/s over a given distance by counting frames. Set your target exactly 100 feet from the muzzle of your shotgun. Determine how many frames were captured from the moment the bullet let the barrel to the moment it made contact with the target. Divide that by how many frames per second your camera was recording. Divide 100 by the previous number, and now you have the average velocity over 100 feet. Then using E=1/2MV^2 Weight the slug in slugs(unit/1=32.1740lbs), square your velocity in ft/s, multiply the two, and then half that. Now you have the average kinetic energy in ft/lbs, but your projectile isn't a square foot. measure the circumference of the projectile at its widest point, square that and divide it by 4pi. Now you have the frontal area of the bullet. Divide 144 by your frontal area, then multiply that by your kinetic energy, and you have the EXACT force being applied by the projectile at the moment of impact. It's a little extra work and a little extra math, but might make for a cool episode using a stock slug to test it out.

Awesome test! I'm curious what a fully rifled barrel would do for the stability and overall performance? again the test was impressive. Marksman was spot on. Video well done. I'm sold. I'll be reloading with those.

+UR IT I don't think there would be that much difference with a fully rifled barrel.

That was awsome! I can't believe it didn't penetrate deeper. I love when a ballistic test surprises me. Have you been stepping on those bears? 😂😂

+The Wound Channel Thanks! I store the bears in the vertical position but I need to store they laying on their backs. They droop a bit.

These look like good home defense rounds or breeching rounds.

+Jared M breaching rounds need to turn to dust on impact. These would kill someone behind the door or possibly punch the lock/hinge into the room at dangerous velocities.

Well done, thank you! Good shootin too. I half-expected good accuracy so, score 1 for the Thug. It would be interesting to see the results using Thugs made using Lyman #2 or Linotype. Thank again Jeff, et al...

***** No worries Jeff. You have a niche market, [send us stuff to shoot and we'll shoot it] bound to be a backlog LOL. I think it's time to call in a favor from my buddy that owns a titanium fabrication company. Let me see if I can get something interesting from him. You would probably like his site... interesting stuff titanmf.com thanks again Jeff.
