We have another Russian shotgun slug sent to us by the mysterious Aceton who wants to remain anonymous. These are heavy slugs made out of soft lead and really pack a punch. We loaded these to fire at 1650 fps (500 m/s). 9 grams heavier and faster than a foster slug, these put Gregg's shoulder through its paces.

The slug shoots lower, in my understanding, because it leaves the barrel faster than a 1oz slug. The recoil forces do not act on the shotgun long enough to raise the barrel and cause the trajectory to rise. I see the same thing in revolvers with light and heavy bullets. The fast, light bullets have a lower POI, while the slow, heavy bullets actually shoot high because the barrel tips more before the bullet leaves. You should do a slow motion video showing the difference between the rise at the point of the projectile leaving a barrel at different speeds. Load some Foster slugs with varying charges and see if the slower ones print higher. Would be cool to see.

The friction of a bullet going down a rifled barrel actually pushes the barrel forward until the bullet leaves the muzzle. This is the way delayed blowback pistols work. Since this happens all the time in a rifle or pistol, it's part of the sighting in process. Smoothbore shotguns don't have nearly as much friction as rifled barrels so the barrel barely gets pushed forward. When you put the rifled choke in the end, it gets pushed forward much more than usual. The slow bullets push the barrel forward less than the faster bullets do in a revolver.

Al Brautigam are you suggesting that the "friction forces" actually move the barrel forward relative to the bolt face? There is no way that will happen in any shotgun as headspace must be maintained throughout the internal ballistic portion of the shot. Delayed blowback beans that there is a force acting again not the bolt face moving rearward of the vector the projectile is traveling in order to ensure the breach does not open before internal pressures are almost normalized to external pressures so your gun doesn't burn your face off. Internet more, or less. Not sure which one you're actually doing wrong.

No, I'm saying the barrel is *pushed* forward. It has a forward force applied to it. This keeps the action locked in a -delayed blowback- *short recoil operation*. (I got those confused.) The barrel is fixed to the frame/receiver in revolvers and most shotguns. The firearm reacts in the opposite way it does when it recoils because the force is in the opposite direction. The muzzle drops instead of rising. Now the barrel is pointed lower than when the trigger was pulled. All guns do this, but it's negligible and repeatable. It's only noticeable when there's a large difference in friction between different rounds in the same gun. Large differences in friction like a mild 158gr 357 and a hot 125gr 357 in a revolver. Pistols usually have a narrower range in power and velocity, and rifles are usually supported better. Smoothbore shotguns have relatively little barrel friction, but think about what happens when a large slug goes screaming down the smooth bore and slams into a rifled choke.

Taofledermaus, why don't you make a 2 part latex mould of unusual slugs? Then you could make wax replicas and then use them to make lost wax moulds or green sand moulds and cast as many rounds as you want.

I wondered this my self - it'd definitely help them create more content and test a wider variety of variables - aside from the rounds that are made from other metals, but it would also be interesting to see how a lead version would compare to the original round(s) like "french blondeu" slugs they just tested or some of the lighter rounds.

a lot of the unusual slugs he shoots aren't solid lead, though. Quite often they're some kind of composite or have a proprietary plastic wad/sabot/tail of some kind.

My guess, you are 100% correct! Any disbelieve should prove it like I tried to about 23 years ago! Hey Jeff, I'm Paul House long time sub, love your channel. Been deer hunting with slugs for about 25 years. When I was young I tried to mitigate recoil for sighting in my scope on a full rifled Mossberg 5o0. We screwed a 2x4 over the barrel down to the shooting bags. I figured as long as it could recoil back it would hold and help slow the impact on my shoulder. Every slug I tried split the 2x4 into splinters. My Grandpa said I wasn't letting the barrel flex! I thought he was crazy, of course, so we took a 12 inch 4x4 and drilled the center lengthwise to slide over the barrel. I was determined to prove it was recoil breaking the board not barrel flex. Again I was 16, what did a 68 year old hunter know that I didn't, so proving him wrong was paramount! He warned me but I still persisted and put the wooden sleeve over the barrel, held the shotgun and touched off a 1oz. federal rifled slug to prove I was right! We spent 2 days trying to get all the slivers out of my arm and hand. Other than barrel-whip as he called it, I can't think of any other reason the wooden barrel sleeve would blow apart! Needless to say, I started to give a little more thought to the whole age, and wisdom thing he talked about! But unfortunately I was young I should have taken notes while I knew everything! I got a good explanation of what is going on: I think you will find that nodes have allot To do with barrel timing which different slugs or bullets or powder loads effect barrel timing or the way it changes the vibration or node points which makes bullets shoot low or high or to the left etc etc etc Accurate loads in riffles and shotguns all come down to barrel timing Look it up on google It's pretty heavy reading but it makes sense after you do some research

because the slilug is so heavy and hauling but (loaded really hot) the barrel flexes more than with other loads.with the vented rib reinforcing the top the lower portions are influenced the most. the flex/whip of the barrel is going to be exaggerated with more powerful loads and will be directed to the least rigid portions

When shooting pistols years ago, we found that when you push them faster than normal, the slug hits low. Slow them down, and they hit high. The theory being that the firearm moves when fired and the faster the slug goes it leaves the barrel before the firearm reacts to recoil, but as the slugs are fired slower, the firearm starts to move, and the slug has a higher trajectory. The movement is almost imperceptible, but there anyway and the proof is where the impact is compared to the faster slug.

Maybe you've forgot such kind of slug like Diabol (popular hand made projectile, looks like for air gun, but bigger), Ivanov's bullet (steel slug), Sputnik (round lead slug) or something else.

Gravity is greater on the bottom of the barrel versus the top so a short round like that is pulled down. I'm glad you guys are on our side, you're lethal. :)

Two theory's why the heavy loads shoot lower. At 11:40 you can see the gas leave the barrel before the slug. This means that it is never a perfect seal and there is always a little bit of wiggle room In the barrel. This could mean that heavier rounds scrape against the bottom harder and allow a little more gas out the top pushing the bullet down as it leaves the barrel. Also in the barrel the bullet and the wadding travel as one, the heavy rounds will probably be more nose heavy, so as the wading pushes on the bullet the heavier round will try harder to tip down, meaning as the bullet leaves the barrel the wadding will be pushing on it a little above center mass pushing the bullet down. Could be a combination of these two things or i could be completely wrong

Like you mentioned, the barrel of the shotgun flexes slightly on each shot. If the slug weighs more, it will push against the bottom of the barrel with more force than a lighter slug. It might cause a slight difference to the angle of the barrel as the slug exits when compared to a lightweight slug. I'd like to see that comparison video using slow-mo!

I use Longshot in my 10mm loads and love it... I get my best and most consistent performance with that powder and my self-designed "NW wilderness" load is based on it as the propellant (165gr solid copper shaped projectile running ~1550fps) The rounds are delivering devastating penetration for thick hyde and bone if needed as well as good soft-tissue damage for a non-expanding round likely due to cavitation .

The inaccuracy is because of the barrel bending downwards due to the weight of the slug (lots of inertia), coupled with the fact the shotgun has a rail that reinforces the barrel in its topmost part (it's easier for it to bend down than up or sideways). Pause the video just before the shot and then skip a few frames forward a backward a couple of times and you'll see the barrel clearly bending. Even a one degree bend will have a dramatic effect on accuracy over a distance you were shooting at.

My theory: When this massive slug engages the rifled choke, a torque effect is created where the rifled tube is now creating a force of it's own in a twist. It is far enough away from OG that it takes him off of the aim point faster that we humans can compensate for. So I also theorize that the design engineer of such a tube would figure out how to do the twist and length so that the result will be a low shot. Then the shooter can compensate and start hitting action figures.

Regarding the slug flying lower. What we found with high velocity, relatively thin walled, cannons (tank cannons for instance) is that during the travel down the tube the projectile first expands the tube and then the tube contracts as the round passes a particular point. This will cause the gun tube to flex up and down and side to side, sometimes to a significant degree (A very good and apt analogy is a high pressure water hose that starts flinging itself around if it isn't be held firmly). We call this phenomenon "gun jump" and for each particular ammunition type and model, the jump is repeatable thus predictable (if the projectile itself has both stable interior and exterior ballistics). Is this the phenomenon you're experiencing with the Grizzly slugs? Perhaps, even probably. No doubt you would see something similar, but different, if you used a rifled slug barrel instead of the rifled choke adapter.

yep yep yep! Also called barrel harmonics or barrel timing. Someone much smarter than me explained this to me the same way you did and that makes sense. The trick is to find the ideal powder charge so the projectile leaves the barrel when it is in the neutral position.

In response to your question of why these big slugs go low very soon out of the barrel...my thought is the rail running the length of barrel on top creates a slightly more rigid member axially. Cross-sectionally, with the rigid member on the positive y-axis, this directs a deformation on the negative y-axis (or opposite of the stiffest/strongest aspect)...thus down. A way to test is with a slug that you see this phenomenon is to rotate the shotty 90 degrees and fire (safely of course) to see if the it follows the opposing direction of the rigid member, i.e., rigid member clocked to 3 o'clock, then the slug should move towards 9 o'clock. It would be interesting to see.

Great video Jeff and nice shooting there Officer Greg.My guess on the lower tracking shots of these slugs might have something to do with the higher velocity. As your aiming point would normally be higher to suit a slower moving projectile. Or it could be a function of the higher pressure in the barrel due to the mass of the slug causing a slight bend or vibration. Good luck finding the cause.
