The ENIGMA Projectile - Shock Wave Stabilized - yep WEIRD

We have a strange one in this episode. This projectile uses an unseen force to prevent it from tumbling in the air. It was pretty tricky to make it work but we finally figured it out. The results were actually quite impressive.
Most projectiles rely on spin, fins, drag, front-heaviness or a combination of those. But these use their own shock wave for stability.

The intro reminded me of a time when I was a kid in science Olympiad: we had a contest to design and fly paper airplanes the furthest when thrown from a 50ft wall...my design was found in a 1950's book of paper airplanes, and consisted of two rings connected by a stiff straw with weight in the front (sinker) Mine flow much further than any other plane, and perfectly straight. It was the big win of my nerdy childhood 😂

@@niq872 this airplane is one of my favorites because it tends to make a dive when it is flying too flat/horizontal, and then when it accelerates from the dive it pitches back up to horizontal again.. it is such a nice design because it has a nice flight pattern, and it is a paper plane that has curves.. i expected Prolific Invention to tell how he won because he used a mass accelerator..

The denser the material the easier it is to maintain a straight path through resistance. Of course the real dense stuff is usually too radioactive to handle with your bare hands. However... perhaps a mixture of Lead with some extra dense radioactive materials would be almost safe enough to handle... I know there was some article claiming the U.S. Military used Depleted Uranium in some of the ammunition used in afghanistan and other middle east countries since back in 2001-ish. "Depleted uranium is roughly 0.7 times as radioactive as natural uranium, and its high density makes it ideal for armor-piecing rounds such as the PGU-14 and certain tank shells." - Google

The amount of spall that a single round makes while going through armor is unreal. And dirty, radioactively speaking. They're looking to replace the DU penetrators with tungsten penetrators in general throughout the DoD, the Navy in the lead last I heard, but I don't know where the Air Force is with that with the 30×173mm round.

I don't know anywhere near what y'all and your subscriber base know about mass acceleration of unlikely (or even likely) projectiles, but I vividly remember my NRA firearms safety course and frequent 3am wake up calls on Saturday mornings for the many memorable and instructive hunting trips with Grandpa and Dad for Pheasant we'd be cleaning that afternoon for supper that evening. I envisioned Grandpa's face as if he were sitting here beside me viewing this video and his exclamations were a bit more blue in color than yours on the video, eyes wide in what he often fondly referred to me doing when surprised (which is probably NOT P.C. at all today): "mouth breathing." Very cool science happening here. Thanks for the upload. Cheers!
