Tarsal tunnel syndrome can cause pain or a funny sensation on the inside or your ankle as well as under your foot. It can easily be confused with other conditions such as plantar fasciitis. In this video, Maryke explains what tarsal tunnel syndrome feels like, how it is diagnosed, and what treatments can be useful.

I'm really lost for words. This is like getting an expert appointment I could never otherwise afford. I have the tarsal tunnel syndrome due to suddenly excessive weighted deep squatting, and I really hope you realise you've helped someone halfway around the world out with this video. Thanks a lot.

When it first started, it eventually gave me a massive sprain that hurt so much I couldn't walk for a few days. Eventually the inflammation stopped, but it still hurts a bit randomly or when I squat. I just hope I overcome this and am able to continue lifting to the best of my potential

This video may have just saved my life. For 2 months I have had nerve pain on the bottom of my foot, The last month of that I've been bed bound, taking gabapentin and meloxicam prescribed by a podiatrist that basically just told me "Oh you have plantar fasciitis and nerve damage due to inflammation.. and we need to get the nerves to calm down before we do anything." So short-sighted. This video opened up every possible fact about what could have happened with me and allowed me to realize what did happened and is happening! THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO!! If I was in the UK you would be my doc hands down. With all your tests basically I was able to narrow down that in the beginning of my injury I likely had tunnel tarsal syndrome from a flat foot and when I became bed bound is when it got the worst but then as it started to get better by my being bed bound I started to do errands, made possible by sticking socks in my shoes underneath my arches so I was only walking on my arches.. HELLO! way to irritate the nerves guy.. So then that sent me back again. And now here's the real kicker.. I was using my mom's walker that has a seat, to scoot around on. It has a backrest that is just a bar so when sitting on that thing for hours a day I'm leaning my L4/L5 against that bar! Strike number three is my favorite mode of transportation I've been wearing my construction knee pads to shuffle around the house, tensing my butt like crazy and hamstrings. The thing that was so messed up is I thought I was doing all the right things yet I was just getting worse and worse. And the dog had nothing to say about it.. The meds made me so anxious I had chills and seriously was wondering about having to commit suicide if it got any freaking worse. Wow. I will say that after this video I got online and started researching like hell all the nerves all the possible dysfunctions in that brought so much light into my world of terrifying unknowns. Physiopedia was pretty amazing at laying more stuff out. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH PEOPLE!! DONT TAKE ONE OPINION OR EVEN TWO UNTIL YOU HAVE RESEARCHED AND UNDERSTAND AS THOROUGHLY AS POSSIBLY IMAGINABLE

Wow! You have just described my symptoms perfectly. Thought I had peripheral neuropathy. Have been receiving treatment from acupuncturist who said I had plantar fasciitis, but I have no pain, no walking issue just numbness and tight muscles. Never heard of this .. but it fits. Thank you. thank you. thank you.

Thank you so much for this thorough and clear explanation. I’m a long-distance hiker and started off thinking I had Plantar Fasciitis after completing a multi-week trek with poor-fitting shoes. Researching my symptoms I decided it sounded more like TTS but couldn’t understand why calf stretches seemed to make the numbness worse sometimes…your video has explained this. I now understand I have a combination of PF and TTS (due to over-pronation). I’ve invested in bespoke orthotics, a massage ball and new boots and I’ll now start a regime of gentle strengthening and stretching exercises, starting from the lower back and gluts downwards. I’m very grateful to you for making and sharing this video…it was my sunshine on a rainy day :-)

Wow. Thanks! I had previously been diagnosed with Posterior Tibial Tendonitis, got new orthotics, rest and rehab, no problems for 8 years. 3 years later, I started to have pain in my calf muscle, then low back pain and was diagnosed with L5-S1 facet arthritis and spondolisthesis, grade 1. Lots of PT, injections, etc. Just learned to live with it, but still able to hike and x-c ski moderate distances - 6+ miles. The ankle pain started up again, sharply while x-c skiing. But I also have very tight calf and hamstrings on that side, and the chronic low back pain. So now I know to go back for more treatment on the low back issues.

Hello! I was told by my regular dr that I had plantar fasciitis and after doing physical therapy without it getting better I was sent to the foot dr. She told me she thought maybe it was tarsal tunnel. I like to learn about medical issues I may have so I found your video while looking for information. You saying that's it's often misdiagnosed as plantar fasciitis made me feel like we are finally on the right track. Thank you for explaining things in a way that someone without the education of a dr can understand!

I am so glad I found this video. I have had tarsal tunnel syndrome for 2-3 years. I have gotten custom orthotics that have not helped enough. I had to retire from hairdressing because the neuropathy in my feet got to be debilitating. I have been convinced that some of the symptoms come from my back because the numbness and unbearable pins and needles are much worse when I sit. My primary doctor is skeptical because I don’t have back pain per say. He did finally order an MRI but my insurance declined it because it wasn’t warranted by their criteria, apparently. The podiatrist gave me exercises but some made it worse, as you said could happen. Thank you for showing me that issues with the lower back can,in fact, be a factor.

There is so much useful general information and tips regarding rehab in your videos, I have to stop the videos and take notes. They are loaded with info much of which is applicable to any injury. Whilst many other practitioner's videos advocate going directly into stretches and loading etc, your videos specifically warn against doing this too early. I have tried both methods, your Method/Approach Works!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.

This was such a helpful video, thank you so much for putting this video out. I have had some sensations of heat in my lower right leg and now it hurts pretty badly in the arch and just above on the top portion of the foot above the arch. I had to stop running because of this and have had to turn to using a stationary bike to continue cardio in my daily exercise routine. Even walking through a store for too long can cause pain for hours after. I’ve had a plantar fasciitis diagnosis previously, so I knew this was not the same. My pain is significantly better after resting. The weird heat sensation I periodically get led me to believe this was nerve related. Thank you for this information about a syndrome I had no prior knowledge about. Now I know some questions to ask when I can finally get to the sports medicine doctor. I have become a fan of yours after seeing a few of your very well presented videos here lately!

Thanks for this great overview. I hope I can get some help with my tarsal tunnel syndrome. It’s quite obviously due snowboarding and the boots that really clamp down on my heel. I am hoping to get a cortisone shot really soon. If that fixes it then I plan on seeing a boot fitter. I just wonder if the shot works, if I have to get some kind of protective cover over that area. I have a positive Tinel’s sign, and the way I figured out what a Tinel’s test was is because there was an obvious abrasion there from the boots. I really hope I can keep that winter activity up.

I am booked to have another injection 6 weeks post. My physio iwhos fabbo has now recommended that it may also be the Baxter nerve that is also trapped. I have heel pain as well when I am on my feel for a long time. ihave had plantar F so I know what that pain is like and I think it is different as I can walk in the morning. I broke my anke coming up 3 years ago in Feb and it has been no stop treatment and pain and two ops already. Now the surgeon is saying maybe the suregery for the entrapment, what is the recovery like for this? Thanks for you video it is a great help.

I had a crush injury 21 years ago to my FEET/ANKLES and was diagnosed with CRPS. I came across a peripheral nerve surgeon from Henderson NV on You Tube who had success operating on patients to DECOMPRESS NERVES! I flew out Sept. 1, and he gave me the correct diagnosis of Tarsal Tunnel. He operated on Right ankle, but it's only been 6 weeks and I'm still on my pain meds. I've heard it can take 6-8 weeks for nerves to heal. He's NOT a Foot and Ankle surgeon, and after watching your excellent video, I am now terrified I may have done more harm! I'm leaving in 3 days to have the LEFT one done. Should I cancel??? WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED AND DO YOU TAKE MEDICARE ? I LIVE 45 MIN FROM O'HARE AIRPORT. PLEASE ADVISE ASAP!! I probably got plantar fasciitis, more sore after waking up and after sitting, but the wall stretch I did when I had it a few years ago is not helping now and my calf doesnt feel tight so I believe issue is in arch of foot, my flexor hallucis longus tendon does feel tighter on my affected foot during flexion, was wondering if that tendon would pull on my heel when running if too tight, making heel sore, my ankle area isnt sore but more pain on inside of heel than the middle of heel, any thoughts, see a foot Dr on Monday

Hello. Enjoyed your vid. Have been experiencing symptoms for 3 weeks now. Odd thing is I was feeling ok with sort of normal aches and pains (66 years old). I did regular things one day, laundry, 2 mile walk, made dinner, etc. Felt fine. Sat down on couch for 2 hours to watch TV, when I got up I could hardly walk. I suppose that makes a case against being a couch potato, ha. Now I can't do my walks or stand for extended time or walk down steps except 1 at a time. Can TT come on that quickly? I did sprain this ankle fairly badly twice in my lifetime, but last time was about 30 years ago. Thank you for caring.

I went through a horrible deal w tarsal tunnel …2 years of my pain (IN BOTH FEET) getting worse and worse I was diagnosed with neuropathy even though my feet never went numb.. plantar fasciitis.. discs in my back.. I had shots in my heels.. epidurals in my back… physical therapy… nerve tests .. mri… wore inserts.. etc etc etc and my pain kept getting progressively worse it was terrible… it was 24 seven and it consumed my life… I finally went to mayo clinic they did all kinds of tests on me but it was when I met the orthopedic surgeon that I knew what I had… it was tarsal tunnel syndrome and my nerves were being crushed for over two years straight… I had to have surgery on both of my feet.. one at a time…the pain got worse before it got better but I still have nerve damage that causes pain and sensitivity from them being crushed for so long.. it was a horrible ordeal… but you are right about all the testing..it could’ve been several things…it seems hard to truly get a diagnosis or at least for me it was until I met the right orthopedic surgeon… he had me diagnosed within five minutes of talking to him describing my pain… my pain started in my heels and overtime it went all the way up the bottom of my foot around the top of my toes…up the top of my foot and then in the back of my knees.. thank God now Cymbalta keeps the nerve damage pain under control but what an ordeal it was!! :(

Hello! Thank you for this video!!! You mentioned stretches for the lower back to help with TTS. Which stretches do you recommend?
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio 4 ай бұрын
There aren't any I recommend as a one-size-fits-all - it depends on what your back needs. A physio can asses it for you and recommend what is needed and right for your case. Doing the wrong things can make it worse.

I was bucked off a horse and landed on my back breaking two flipper bones, the ones on the side of our spine. Based on your information, this could contribute to pain around my ankle area an at times up my leg.

Wow. So informative! I have had all of these symptoms for over a year as well as a partial tear in my peroneus brevis. At my recheck I brought this up to my doctor and he completely blew me off and wants a new MRI to recheck the tear. I am at a loss now of how to proceed and so frustrated!

It is sometimes useful to seek a second opinion. If your symptoms are over the inside of the foot then the peroneus tear won't really have anything to do with it because that tendon runs on the outer side of the ankle/foot.

Thanks for great information you provide. Quick question, if I got TTS from sprained ankle, would it go away once sprained ankle was healed up?

Yes, it usually does.

I have weakness in my both feet and I also have spinal stenosis in my lumbar spine. I don't know if I have both conditions, but both of my feet are affected and I can barely walk more than a few thousand feet before I have to rest. It's miserable. I feel better after sitting down for a while or lying down. Afterwards I can do a few chores for a short period of time but I can't do what I used to do before this condition came on rather suddenly over ten years ago. ☹️
