Why it is called Devils trill Tartini allegedly told the French astronomer Jérôme Lalande that he had dreamed that the devil had appeared to him and had asked to be Tartini's servant. At the end of the music lesson, Tartini handed the devil his violin to test his skill, which the devil began to play with virtuosity, delivering an intense and magnificent performance. So singularly beautiful and executed with such superior taste and precision, that the composer felt his breath taken away.[3] The complete story is told by Tartini himself in Lalande's Voyage d'un François en Italie:

When I first was watching this, I was like, "This isn't too bad. Why's it called Devil's Trill?". Then I got to 4:00 and I realized that this wasn't as easy as I thought. Then they started playing...
@TeamDiamondShaft
@TeamDiamondShaft 6 жыл бұрын
It's actually called devil's trill because in a dream, the composer was on his death bed and the devil himself was there. He then played the most beautiful piece he'd ever heard, played by the devil. This song is an attempt to recreate that.
@aquilachecanta
@aquilachecanta 6 жыл бұрын
It was not on his death bed... it was a dream Tartini had in which the devil submitted to any of his orders so, Tartini, commanded the devil to play the best music he could with the violin. He tried to reproduce the amazing music he heard however it was nowhere near, for his admission, to the original music the devil played for him. Tartini himself said:"This is one of my best compositions but is nowhere near to the beauty I heard. I would destroy my violin and give up music if it was not for the joys this still gives me"

Brilliant playing of a brilliant composition. The most difficult parts of the piece are the Allegro Assai and the Allegro Moderato with the melody played while simultaneously trilling. Then after that is Kriesler cadenza, clearly inspired by Paganini's Caprice No.6. All in all, one of the most difficult Baroque pieces in the repertoire, up there with the Bach Sonatas and Partitas.

I got the sheet music for this many years ago after hearing this very recording, and took it to my teacher and said "I don't even know how to read this." One of my favourite pieces but utterly bonkers to try and play. And no, I still can't play it.

I genuinely believe the ending climactic Adagio; single-handedly is paramount, the greatest moment in all of music.

Tremendously swing of emotions. There may be some wickedness in there, but all the emotions are true and sincere. I don't know how young people understand it, but listen to this piece again when you passed 40.
