A British couple from just outside London, England. We got married in 2018 and decided instead of a honeymoon we’d travel the world together for a year. We saved money and travel points, quit our jobs, rented our house out and boarded a one way flight. We started this KZbin channel to share our experiences with friends, family and anyone who plans to travel to the places we’re visiting. We leave TKT tips/facts on our vlogs and blogs to give information that we wish we’d had before visiting. We hope you find our content useful :)

Good video. Spent a few years living between London and Estonia. Used to often fly from Tallinn to tartu on the old Estonian air. Only 35 mins ,compared to 2hrs30 on bus. I first went to tartu around 2002 .totally modernised since then. Only had around 8 hotels then, only a dozen or so bars with tables and chairs outside. I did prefer it in the old days before they built the shopping centre around 2008. Tartu has a great spirit and is one of the safest city's in the world. I never knew it had a old cathedral till I watched this video. Great memories of a lovely city.

But the questions you had in your video (don't know if someone already commented..). In the city centre, the screen you saw. It's for our annual romantic movie festival TARTUFF. They screen different movies during those days and it's free to attend. And the place where you had your lunch...All together it's called Kampus but it consists of three different restaurants - Kauss (a poke place), Uulits (a burger place) and Peakoka nurk.

I don't agree with you. Tartu was a quiet place in the summer 15 years ago, but not anymore. Tartu is full of events in the summer, I will give some examples. Rally Estonia brings 50,000 people to Tartu and southern Estonia. Last summer, Metallica brought more than 60,000 people here, and the Tartu Hanseatic Days bring thousands of people to the Old Town every July! Tartu Love Film Festival, Emajõe Days and so on, I could continue this list for a long time :)

Tartu has also two wery distinct boroughs with very distinct identities: Karlova to the East may look a lot like Kalamaja in Tallinn but it is far grander with its Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Functionalist wooden and stone buildings. Supilinn in the West side is something entirely different. Until the end of the 1990s it was considered to be the working class slum of Tartu. With the street names like Potato Street, Pea Street, Melon Street and Bean Street it really makes up the Soup City as its Estonian name suggest. Now, however, it is becoming more and more gentrified.

What's the difference between Estonia and its neihgbours Latvia, Lithuania and Russia? What do you feel about it?
@TideKnotTravellers
@TideKnotTravellers 3 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, that’s a big question. There is a huge difference between each and each has such an intricate/heartbreaking history. Russia is an intriguing place and we loved getting to know some locals there, the people are lovely but the country’s history/politics is well... not so lovely! Lithuania was such a sweet little country and although there is less money there, the architecture and pride in their country really shows, same for Latvia and the nature in all the Baltic states amazed us. Estonia feels like a real mix between a Baltic state and a Scandinavian country which makes it a very unique place, it’s part of it’s charm mixed with it’s own fascinating history and medieval old town. That’s the shortest version answer😅

Burgers? is there no Estonian food available that you could share as evidence of Estonian food culture? Sad. I think its a generational thing! I will be travelling to Estonia soon and I wont be eating McDonalds, drinking Starbucks or eating Dunkin Donuts. Eating local cuisine to experience the local culture is a part of "being" there and "experiencing" why I travel.
@TideKnotTravellers
@TideKnotTravellers Жыл бұрын
I understand where you’re coming from but after 6 months in Estonia we have tried plenty, however it is difficult as most Estonian dishes are meat based and one of us is vegetarian so to find a place that offers vegetarian food is great! You’re right you won’t be eating or drinking at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts anywhere in Estonia because they aren’t there. There is a McDonald’s in Tallinn but we never went there because there was no vegetarian option there and Tallinn is full of great food spots too, enjoy! Head to Telliskivi for some great local cuisine, we have a video showing all the lovely street food there.

Tartu got city rights in the middle of 13th century, but it was totally destroyed after Russia conquered it from Sweden in the Great Northern War, in 1704. According to the treaty Russia had with their ally, Poland, these areas were meant to go to Poland after the war. As Russia always had interesting relations with their allies, they were blowing up every building in the city, and all the remaining citizens of Tartu were deported to Russia. Later, as Sweden managed to knock Poland out from the war, Russia succeeded to keep the territory, but they introduced a ban to build any stone houses except in the new capital, St. Petersburg, and so, Tartu was rebuilt as a wooden town, and most of the town burnt in 1775. As the result, very few buildings are older than that, and from the medieval times, only the churches, and some fragments of city walls remained.

I love that they are working to reduce car traffic and improve air quality. I wish more places would do that. The Tartu University has a really high reputation among Universities around the world. Amazing. By the way I really love the music for this video. The horns and percussion has a great vibe. The Tartu Cathedral is lovely. I love the 13th century architecture. I also love the cobblestone streets you are walking along. This is my favorite type of street. I love the way they created the National Estonian Museum. We need reminders of the past even if the past that was painful. It teaches the next generations not to make the same mistakes. It's beautiful. Craig, that swing look like something made for giants. The food and swing were definitely highlights for Craig😅 when we hear there’s a spike in cases in Estonia we tend to know that the word ‘spike’ is all relevant to the number of people, smaller population = smaller number infected so a ‘spike’ is not so scary especially as everyone gives you space here compared with other places around the world.

Such a charming city, but seems to have plenty of modern shops. Those fries looked perfect! The cathedral looks stunning and so historic. Looks like a great city to explore by foot. That sunset you caught was lovely and I thought it was too funny that Craig was embracing his inner child on the swing.

Tartu looks incredible and the way you captured your experience, we felt we were with you every step of the way. Those burgers looked sooooo good and we could see how you were both so excited to get tucked in, so glad they lived up to your expectations. Its fantastic to hear what they are hoping to achieve by 2024, as it would be great if more countries and cities were trying to achieve the same. It looked like Craig had a blast on the swing and the smile said it all. Keep safe guys and enjoy every moment. ONE LOVE

Uni Tartu is my alma mater :) As a proud Tallinner myself, I never understood the "beef" between Tallinn and Tartu (one being full of posh pr*cks and another on being a countryside village haha). I spent some of my best years while studying in Tartu and that's why I really appreciate the video. Best of luck in Greece guys :) !

We didn’t realise there was ‘beef’ between the two cities, but it makes sense, happens everywhere with people having links and preferences to their city. We’re glad to have brought back some memories for you, Tartu must’ve been a great place to be a student🙂

Kirsty, have you been to the Vegan restaurant in Tallinn? I think you might have liked it.

We went to a few vegan/veggie vendors inside the Balti Jaam and also a vegan street food van in Telliskivi. My favourite vegan food place in Tallinn was Vegan Inspiratioon in the Old Town on Lai street. Did see another place too but didn’t manage to get there, yet! 🙂

19:50 A swing like that is known as a "village swing". Every major village or settlement had one. Young people from around the rural area met there, so-called swing songs were sung and the first romantic liaisons formed.
