Hello Itchy, I worked on a commercial fishing vessel in Alaska. For two days, the wind blew over one hundred knots. It was really rough and we worked hard to stay afloat and alive. Our skipper and our boat were true to the test and all was good. The third day, we had to navigate up into Fredrick sound...Mendenhal glacier had calved hundreds of icebergs into the water. The rough seas the days prior had washed many whole tree trunks from the shore line. Some of them were bobbing straight up and down in the water, called dead heads. We tossed a rope onto a strange shaped iceberg and pulled it close to the ship. We then broke a huge chunk of the blue ice free and used it on board for ice. It was the cleanest tasting ice and the most solid ice I have ever experienced. I just wanted to share that with you. Smiling, George.

And they really shouldn't be. I guess it's hard to justify a seldom-occurrence fix-it event but then again, there is a certain joy in being exactly that: a seldom occurrence. "See? I don't hafta do this ALL the time, but just enough to keep my skills at their best." I mean, in a Real Shop, they have experience with THEIR equipment's parts but may not have much knowledge at cross-brands.

Well , this episode could easily be described as a study of Glaciers. Thanks to Noraly's guide, one learns about various aspects of the Glacier. Looking back , so many natural wonders came along the ride - from Hot springs and Geysers to frozen lakes and icy slopes , from barren desserts and cacti to lofty mountains with giant trees, just to mention a few. One could write a book having abundance of knowledge. And Bill at Anchorage is definitely amply knowledgeable as far as the bikes are concerned . Did a great job with Alaska. There is a story about those signs... I believe another land owner at the bottom doesn't like the tourist traffic so he throws those signs up in hopes of tourists seeing them and then deciding not going down the road. The Glacial tour was very interesting and the guide was very personable . He was informative but not overly science descriptive . I enjoyed that . I had an uncle that was very much like Bill ( your mechanic ) his name was George Phillips and not only thorough like Bill but an absolute genius mechanic . My uncle made a riding mower tractor and push mower long before anyone else thought of them . He hand built and flew a small airplane , an inboard boat and shed full of small model airplanes . His mid 60's Triumph , BSA and Cushman motorcycles were always in his living room . He was my brother's and I's hero ...amazing man . Miss my uncle George everytime we visited him we spent hours listening to his advice on motorcycles and mechanics . PK

I was lucky enough to spend 20 years working with technicians like Bill. Because of his experiences he knows were to look, wear area's. Dealers don't spend the time because they dont get paid to look for area's of concern, that Bill knows exist on most any off road bikes. That doesn't excuse the fact, that they should tell you it needs attention or maintenance. It sounded like he mentioned the output shaft drive splines have considerable wear on them which is a major repair. The white spark plug shows the bike is running lean and is how modern bikes run due to emission tuning. Reflashed ECU's help this, driveabilty and mileage. The only way your fork seals could have popped out was because of previous repairs that left the fork seal retaining ring out. Alaska got some love in this episode and I'm sure she feels different and runs much better. Ride on our friend. Your episodes keep getting better and better.🤙

I was beginning to think that Noraly was not really meeting and talking with many folks in the US and Canada compared to Central America, despite meeting Ed, of course, and chainsaw George out in the middle of nowhere. But in the last couple of postings we've enjoyed the company of copper-mine-man, and glacier-man, and the rather wonderful bike mechanic Bill. So these meetings and conversations are happening after all. Which is great, as they fill in a lot of background and help Noraly on her way.

I like your explanation of the individual mechanic shop vs at the dealership. Those folks at the dealers are good service techs but that's what they are taught to do, be service techs, not mechanics. We are not the same. The passion a mechanic has is different. The little details like him seeing the drag on yourr rear brake mechanism and master cylinder getting cleaned and freed up. Those little things stack up and give a personal touch. The observation of the lean condition, making sure you had personalized fork tube guards, mirrors that will work (even though they are borrowed from another bike)
@DRZWhisperer2 жыл бұрын

From my experience a good mechanic checks everything, and will triage your bike with things that need doing and things that are getting close to need doing, they will adjust and advise where needed, they have a standard of care for customers and their machine and it feels much more social. A technician on the other hand will just change the parts on a list handed to them by their line manager no more, no less and this makes it feel more like a bank transaction. Thanks Bill you are most definitely the former, Skilled people are a treasure and should not be taken for granted. Ride safe Noraly thanks for posting.

What a great episode - I learned a lot. When you warned about the possible dangers of walking on the glacier, I thought of the dangerous crevasses you could fall into. But in fact, I underestimated the little water at 8:05 . What looked like a shallow puddle was much deeper than I expected. Also, the black ice at 17:55 under the muddy water - so glassy without any texture. The 572 year old tour guide was hilarious - very knowledgeable, but also very funny. Last but not least Bill, the mechanic with his little workshop - fixing motorcycles is not just his job, but his vocation and passion. He literally went the extra mile to make his customers happy. Hats off to both of them, real experts that are hard to find these days.

I have always believed in the small private shops. The big car/moto dealers are more focused on business, they do not care much for the people. I usually end up becoming close friends with my mechanics, more like a family doctor, they know your needs and likes. Sometimes even accommodate for your budget. - The tour at the Matanuska Glacier was so otherworldly. I felt we were in another planet completely. The areal takes were so wonderful. Noraly wat een mooie belevenis. Maar het mooiste zijn de mensen waar je gewoon op kunt rekenen👍

Good job Bill, Chris, and Michelle for getting 'ALASKA' in tip top shape so Noraly can finish the final miles of her road trip.☘

Once again angels watching over Noraly! Thanks Bill for getting Alaska back in shape. Glad to see the hydraulic lines and other cables routed correctly now. Can't believe the dealer where she got the fork seals installed did such shoddy work.

Beautiful Noraly. What an awesome privilege to walk on a glacier like that. And to meet such a lovely, knowledgeable guide and mechanic. It's also a privilege to be able to share and see it all thru your eyes. Thanks as always ❤️😊

Can’t ask for better hospitality then BILL the motorcycle mechanic. If I’m ever in that area I will be sure to stop by his shop and have a full service done on my motorcycle there. Please remember to keep the rubber side up, keep smiling, and enjoy life to the fullest.

Once again Noraly, what a great episode! Last video the Coppermine tour and now the glacier tour. We get to see things in a whole different way as we see them usually in documentaries. That's what makes this series so spectacularly fantastic!

Really great drone shots of the glacier and your guide was not only informative, but humorous as well. So glad you found Bill and he treated Alaska to complete and detailed inspection and informed you of possible needed repairs. The 39000ks you have put on her have shown that Honda has produced a darn tough lite motorcycle that is easier to handle than most of the big adventure bikes. Stay dry, warm and happy. From your East Texas Follower. Bill

“I rarely know what I’m doing.” 😂 Same, Noraly, same. What a cool hike on the glacier. McGuire was an excellent guide and his great sense of humor was a plus 👍🏼

Noraly's style of riding took her to far distant places thousands of miles away from her homeland and back. I'm also a rider but has never crossed a country. I envy her and she inspire me. Hurrah! Good job Noraly.

Great service from Bill! Alaska starting to show some wear and tear from a long journey but still impressed how she has held up👍.

Bill, being an exmechanic, I really appreciate your thoroughness in taking care of our girl Noraly. To me, you exemplify what it means to be a good mechanic. You did what the customer asked, and while you were doing that, you were looking for other conditions that needed attention, and took care of them. Well done!
