I have several Gros Michel plants in my garden. The ones that I have growing are tissue culture plants from Africa. They are a large banana with a through and through banana flavor. The Cavendish is not the only commercial variety sold in the U.S. The Gran Nain is also very popular. Different companies use different bananas. del Monte, or Dole doesn't have the same bananas as Chiquita. Commercial bananas are picked green, then stored in large warehouses at a low temperature to stop the ripening process until they are ready for fulling shipping orders. A few days before shipping the temperature is raised and methane gas is pumped into the warehouses to start the ripening process. Home grown bananas are much different than artificial ripened bananas. I grow Cavendish and they are definitely different from store bought in both texture and taste, but mostly similar. A Blue Java subgroup called the Ice Cream banana is quite good, with overtones of vanilla ice cream flavor. Dwarf Nam Wa is also an extremely sweet banana. Mona Lisa has to be one of the most aromatic and tasty bananas that I have. Some rare varieties...Dwarf Maoli (pink orange flesh) Pisan Gua (from Thailand) Pisang Ceylon, Red Jamaican, Saba, Venti Cohol, Kandarian, Orinoco, Sweetheart, Mahoi (two stalks on one plant) Hua Moa, The list is almost endless of the varieties. If you live in a southern climate such as myself (southwest Florida) growing tropical fruits is quite fun, but it is hard work. Lost of organic composting, natural fertilizers, plenty of water and plenty of sunshine. Guavas, Papayas, Avocados, Surinam Cherries, Loquats, berry bushes (black raspberry, loganberry) Mulberry tree, of course citrus, and pomegranates (very hard to get to fruit)

We always ate this when I was a kid! My mom used to whisk the cream so it thickens a bit before putting the chili sauce in, to get it to cover the bananas properly. It’s nice, because the sugar in the chili sauce coats the bananas and caramelize in the oven so it gets even more delicious! 😍 It’s, by far, my favorite dish! You should try this topping on a pizza as well (very common in Sweden): tomato sauce, pork, banana, curry powder and mozzarella! To add some extra richness, have some bearnaise sauce on the side! Absolutely delicious!

The Gros Michel bananas Miami fruit is selling now are way smaller than the ones the United Fruit company was selling from the late 1800's through the 50's and possibly early 60's in some regions. There are dwarf varieties of it so this may explain the size.

That is true, but it also depends on where they come from. There are some that are now being propagated from original plants in Africa (before they were industrialized) I have talked with a few people who say they are as close to the originals as possible. There is so much cross breeding and sometimes tissue cultures are not properly identified and you get a plant that is not even close to what is advertised. It can be a huge crap shoot.

As someone who grew up on food from that era in Sweden, there were more casseroles that featured the combination of meat, sauce, curry powder, bananas and peanuts besides just the Flying Jacob. A staple in our family still to this very day (from a recipe in my family's main cookbook from 1982), and one of my absolute favorites, is a pork tenderloin casserole with a creamy curry sauce and peanuts, that you eat together with rice and top it with banana slices, more peanuts (and we also add cashews), raisins and coconut flakes. It sounds super bizarre, but when mixed all together it's AMAZING.

One of the best Swedish recipes! Perfect mix of sweet and salty and goes wonderful with rice! Love it! Also a perfect dish to serve when you have guests because it’s easy to prepare beforehand and just heat up in the oven while cooking the rice and voila, a nice meal without having to be in the kitchen all the time! In my family we tend to use chicken breast or de-boned chicken thighs cooked from scratch at home, and we use ketchup instead of chili sauce in the cream sauce. And we cut the banana into banana coins so it’s easier to eat and more evenly spread out throughout the dish. The bacon adds a lot as well, but the peanuts can be omitted unless you want them for the texture. Heck, now I think I’ll have to suggest to mum that we cook Flygande Jacob this coming weekend!

I just cut down a stalk of Mona Lisa bananas. They are some of my absolute favorites. These are the first ones I have had here in my yard. The stalk was about 25 pounds/120 bananas. There were 4 ripe ones when I cut it. I hung thee stalk on the patio to ripen naturally. They were ripening from the top down. We were eating them every day, my wife took them to her work, I gave away a bunch to neighbors and friends. There was still a half a stalk left yesterday. They were almost all ripe. When I came out this morning to feed our fish in the pound every single banana was on the patio floor. They all fell off overnight. I have never seen that before, and I have had a lot of bananas. Picked them all up, took them in the house and washed them all. I counted and I had just 50 of them. It will be banana bread tonight (Amish recipe) some will freeze and the rest will be banana/blueberry smoothies and banana cream pie.

I'm watching this over breakfast and it almost made me taste the dish this reminds me of instead. One of my favourite dishes as a kid was called "familie pot" (Dutch for family pot/dish). Probably the only way I would eat bell pepper. It contained banana, canned pineapple, baked beans, green bell pepper, onion and "rookworst" (smoked sausage). I never made it myself growing up, I only helped chopping (and eating) the sausage, but I can make it from memory anyway because it's just that simple. It's just a matter of tossing all ingredients in a wok in a sensible order.

My lovely brother gifted me 3 types of rare bananas when I graduated this summer. The small ones, some red bananas and one more I don’t remember. They where SO good! More citrusy and tangy and perfumy, not at all like normal bananas

in indonesia, we fry unripe pisang raja (cut in half, or like a fan) with a thin coat of sweet kinda like tempura batter, and then fried it. it's great, and very vertile. many eat it with sweet toppings (condensed milk, choco sprinkles) or savory like sambal

We grew up eating Hines Chili Sauce on our scrambled eggs - an absolute must! It's a great combo between ketchup and a hot chili sauce (it's really not hot - my Mom loves it and she doesn't eat garlic bc she thinks it's too hot! 😂 ). Try it on your eggs next time!!! If too mild, mix in a bit of Siracha. Yum.
