I pay a $100 deposit for my artist, and that $100 goes TOWARDS the price of the tattoo, and the sketch process is a part of that. During the first experience with my artist, she misunderstood and accidentally drew the wrong type of shark. She was really cool about it, and redrew the piece with the right kind. It was a great experience overall! Don’t let this woman ruin anyone’s choice to go to a female tattooer!

I was just coming here to say this... And to add on, yes, a deposit it normal and should go towards the final price. It's also used to secure and hold your tattoo appointment and almost always non-refundable because if you were to bail on the appointment they're not completely out for the time that could have been booked for someone who would show up and pay. The artist I go to most frequently charges 25% of the final price for the deposit.

A real tattoo artist wants people to be happy about their tattoos, to get what they want because it's permanent and represents the artist's skills and for clients to speak highly of their business. But this woman isn't a tattoo artist, she is a scammer that found something they can take advantage of. It's giving me contentfarms on youtube vibes but with tattoos lmfao. Ye they make the stuff and it's technically legal, but it's low quality and the only goal is money, art is not involved.

Same. My tattoo artist charges $100 deposit and it goes towards the tattoo. She charges about $140ish an hour. All consultations and sketching is free. Prices are definitely variable based on your area, but I don't think Courtney was from an area where this is an acceptable price. Not the designs, not the consultation, and deposits would be factored into that 6k.

As an artist, a sketch like the one Lindsay produced would only take 5 minutes. To produce an actually dynamic pose that is to the specifications, it would take me maybe 15-20 minutes including proper linework (experimenting with line weight and such as well, and making the piece more polished than just a sketch) My hourly rate is like $18, I wouldn't even bother charging lmao
@EIiyel
@EIiyel Жыл бұрын
God yeah, I've gotten more detail into one-minute gestures than is present in that sketch. $1500 is insane for something like that. I would not be the least bit surprised if part of the reason for the pricing is that the fox sketch shown legitimately took ages to do. The wonky anatomy and large gaps in the linework make it pretty clear that there was no basic construction used to build out the shape of the fox before those lines were put down, so Lindsay was almost definitely an amateur artist that absolutely should not have been advertising professional work. The money lost still sucks, but Courtney definitely dodged a bullet there by not letting that artist put ink on her body. Probably would've wound up with a permanent tattoo looking like that one photo of a poorly taxidermied fox sitting in a chair, and coverups or laser removal for a fully colored half-sleeve wouldn't be much help.

My artist did the same. He didn't charge for the consult but I did have to put down some money when I made my ink appointment that went towards the final price (assurance that I will come). He started the clock once he had everything ready and was ready to ink and paused the clock when I took a bathroom break. I got a sternum tattoo there and the artist that did that one wanted to stop the clock every time I needed a breather. She would ask every time should I stop the clock, the tattoo was a small one so I had her keep the clock going the whole time because I had saved enough to tip a lot that time.

There is a good chance someone like this would not fair well when actually brought to court, especially when it's shown she traced, etc. I'm also not a lawyer, but it's important to remember that just because a police officer said it's so doesn't mean it's so. I'm a regular artist and I have been working on this one piece for MONTHS. It's acrylic on canvas with sculptural elements. The sculptures are of flowers. I have these bases made of tissue paper, wetted and hardened so they're super solid, and I have watercoloured and added each petal manually. I'm nearly half way done the flowers. I decided with how much work has been involved (I have to hold each flower to the base for at least 5 minutes EACH to get them to stick too... they're hydrangea so there are at least 20 flowers per base and each flower has 4 petals, each petal was individually hand painted with watercolour paint... lightfast, high end watercolour paint at that. And that's just the junder layer of flowers. The overlayer is painted with pearlescent watercolour paint, and each of the pearlescent flowers has not one, but FOUR glass beads in the middle to make up the little flowers in the middle of each. The painting is about 9'x11' but the sheer amount of work I have done on this thing is nuts. And that's not even including the literal subject of the (acrylic) painting itself! I decided last time I was working on it that I would be charging $500 for it. It is the most expensive painting I have created and I almost felt bad about the price but then I went to glue a flower and realized I needed to make at least 30 more than I had already. - 5 mediums - 4 seperate skills (at this level gluing and cutting are absolutely a skill lol) - 8 months worth of hours (the prelim sketch was an inktober challenge) - many trips to various stores - using up precious toilet paper (clean guys, clean unused, not even opened near the bathroom toilet paper) - canvases aren't cheap... - AND I should get $500 alone just to figure out how to ship the damn thing lol. - not to mention the nearly *THIRTY* _years_ of developing my skills to the level they are *AND I'M STILL ONLY CHARGING A FRACTION OF THIS WOMAN'S SKETCH!*

Then the girl said she was quoted $1700 for the whole tat and that’s why she paid the 50% $850 deposit, and the artist said nope, $850 is just my deposit rate.. And so that’s why the next day the girl said she wasn’t paying yet ANOTHER daily rate for a couple hours of work. That shit HAS to be illegal. @@tessmary1831 yeah, we tax goods AND services. It's the name of the tax. Or was? Deposits are fairly common for artists who have more client potential than hours in a day, or complex/large pieces requiring more than one appointment... Usually comes with a signed agreement with an addendum that you will be reimbursed if the total tattoo time wage is lower than the deposit, probably something about losing right to reimbursement following getting fixed or finished from another artist. Pls tip. A good tattoo artist isn't embarrassed to state the outright cost of their labour, what is a shop/travel fee, and the cost of their supplies... And if they believe they need a cancellation/temporary exclusivity policy... Up front and before being asked about it.

@@yvonnesun2311 that's the problem, lol. The way the provinces and federal government work together on taxes makes it confusing. I'm *pretty sure* (but not a tax professional) that the GST (goods and sales) is for Canada, and then we had PST (provincial something tax) for our provinces (alongside other kinds of taxes). I think HST, Harmonized Sales Tax, is the calculation of adding (or harmonizing if you're fancy) the federal tax to whatever each province has for tax to make purchases less confusing and avoid this conversation all together. Take that Harper. Regardless, unless the service is saving your life, or the goods support life, you're paying taxes on everything in Canada.

Came to say exactly this! If you're booking something big like a back piece or a sleeve, lots of artists will charge a consultation/sketching fee because the sketch will take a lot of time & effort - so they're just making sure they're compensated for that even if you change your mind & don't get the tattoo. I'd say £80/$100 feels reasonable for a big intricate piece - but it ALWAYS comes off the final cost of the tattoo! Also, no artist worth their salt would charge you for changes (within reason obvs).

I got my first tattoo in 2018 from an artist from South Korea who was travelling to Australia as a guest tattooist at a studio. We collabed over email in the months leading up to his arrival. Even though I don't speak Korean and he had limited English, we were able to bring my vision to life through google translate and lots of concept images. He didn't charge me for a consultation or design fee, only a deposite fee and then the rest would be paid for after the tattoo was done. It ended up being around $1800 AUD for it, with the tattooing taking place over two 6hr sessions. Also, the tattoo was a back tattoo from nape to butt. He ended up asking if I was a design major in University with how thorough I was in my explanation to him about style, position, shapes etc... it was a fantastic experience.

I'm sorry $6,000! She could have gotten a full colored back tattoo of a fox for that price. I have currently three tattoos & am working towards getting my 4th & 5th. My biggest piece cost me $550 & that was for a full colored shoulder piece that took a little over 5 hours to get done. I had full control on how the design looked as well as the colors being used. I've had to do like booking fees (usually not over $20-50) but I've never heard of a consultation fee for a tattoo although I could see it for big named artists or some places that get a ton of clients ever day. There's were however two big flag though that stuck out to me: One was the different packages being offered. A tattoo artist will usually give a range or a rough amount for the price of the piece. For example they may say $200 for a piece but sometimes it make take a little longer so they may end up charging $250 for it just because it took like a half an hour longer to do the tattoo. The second big red flag was that the only way she was going to be able to change the design was to pay more. I have never seen an artist tell someone that they won't be able to change the design that will be permanent on their body unless they pay more. Yes it's that's artist work they're putting on the person's body but the person getting the tattoo is the one paying for it so they should be allowed to have input regarding something that is going to be on their body forever

I think it's because if they don't charge they could spend all day talking to hundreds of people that would just back out and end up making no money. I am a tattoo artist and this is what I take from this. I think this whole situation is garbage and don’t know how someone can take advantage of a nice enough person who would pay this much money for your work, and her design is all traced and stiff and if you have to trace to make your tattoos you should go back to being an apprentice and take some college art classes. Buttt I do agree with getting charged a deposit that goes toward your tattoo. I’ve had people run off with my designs and had their cousin in a basement copy it, or they no call no show me and I’ve wasted my time when I could’ve been making money but instead I’m doing free labor. But usually it’s only 50-100 bucks for most artists. I couldn’t imagine charging over that

I can understand paying for a design if you are getting a design from an artist who will not be tattooing the work themselves. I've seen artists "sell" designs out of their book in this way, and I intend to pay for a design myself in the future as it is a particular indigenous style that will be designed around my family background, lineage, and will be designed by someone who has extensive research into it. What she did was completely ridiculous and preyed on sunk cost fallacy and also probably that she knew that she could trick enough people who are uneasy with confrontation.

Okay but: if someone pays you over a 1k for a commission, the LEAST you can do is make sure that you don't misunderstand anything the client asks for. They've sent references, if you want to change something about that design you should first ask if that's okay unless the client already stated otherwise (for example with the flowers, she did say that was okay to change). I have taken more care with commissions that were for 5 euros for a family member😭

Even if theyre not getting the product they are asking and already spent loads of money, they can sue them out for that. Also artist theft is a huge HUGE plagiarism. So easy court case for everyone

Even scars should be discussed at the beginning and you should be given notice of any hiccups it may cause .

I'm only 6 minutes in and just want to point out that it's common practice to pay some kind of fee for a tattoo artist to sketch out your idea since it can take up a lot of their time especially if it's a super custom piece you're looking for. That being said whenever I've had to pay it's been a very small amount and that fee gets deducted from the overall cost of the tattoo. However, a consultation fee is a bit odd and not something I've ever encountered and I'm quite heavily tattooed.

I may not be a tattoo artist, but I am a full-time artist myself who does commission work. Client trust is a big thing for me when it comes to commissions. At the end of the day it's our clients who pay our bills and give us the opportunity to work on our craft as a full-time job. When it comes down to it, we will move onto the next job and if our work speaks for itself we will be blessed with the right opportunities at the right times, that being said our clients are the ones who will have to see / live with the fruits of our labor. When we move onto the next commission / job they will be left with something they paid for and want done a certain way, maybe instead of surcharges for designs and consultations she could put more effort into the final product and keep her as a future customer. I get that people don't want to work for free, but the least you can do is be more accommodating to your customers. That paves the way for the jobs that pay the most and more important consistent income. As an artist, I am ashamed that a client was treated in that way. I'm glad she's getting the tattoo but she deserves that refund. Just because it's legal, it doesn't make it right

It's been 10 years and the NDA ended so heed my words: if you want a good tattoo, find someone at work, friend, or see someone in public with tattoos that peak your interest and get a personal recommendation. Word of mouth is the best way to find the best & worst artists in your area.

The answer to why people even agree to pay this is simple: sunk cost fallacy. Notice how she gets them to pay a fairly sibstantial, but seemingly reasonable fee at first, like the $180 consultation fee. That is a price you could agree to pay. At this point they don't know that additional fees are to come. After getting them to invest time and money she gives them a bit more, but charges a larger fee. This seems unfair, but you already invested so much... So you pay. And THEN the really unreasonable fees start. As they say "I could keep going, or I could just throw away ~$1000". At this point they feel like they've already invested so much time and money that they have to keep going to at least get a tattoo in the end. You see what the second lady says "I'm out $4000, but at least I got a tattoo". She hooks them with a substantial, but seemingly reasonable fee at first, and then increases it little by little until they reach the point where they don't want to deal with her, but if they pull out that's thousands of dollars for literally nothing. And that's without counting in how rude and pushy she is. Her behavior alone can scare someone from speaking up, which is exactly the point of it.

I paid 50$ for the sketch of the tattoo I was going to get. I told the artist everything I wanted regarding colors, details surrounding the main image, changes to the sketch that I brought in. I was very detailed. He said no problem and told me it would be 350$ for the tattoo. He emailed the sketch he made a few days later and it wasn't what we had discussed. In some aspects it was the complete opposite. So I told him it looked fine but I was expecting it to be more like what we had discussed. He wasn't happy about it but "reworked" it a bit. It looked basically the same. But I'm not very confrontational and I really wanted this tattoo. So I told him it was great and I couldn't wait to see it in color. He thought I wanted another sketch with full color. He got very annoyed and told me it would cost 300$ more. I explained that I meant the actual tattoo itself, not another sketch. That's when he told me the tattoo would cost 560$. At that point I said keep my 50$.

quite disturbing how this artist has gotten as well off as she has with her unethical practices. I personally am an artist who does commissions, some that have been used as reference for tattoos or even as tattoo designs, and I don't even let my commissioners pay for half until i finish the sketch. The fact that she makes people pay just for consultation actually boggles my mind into oblivion. She's actually crazy out of pocket for this.

I paid $80 for a small tattoo in 2019. Unfortunately, it’s kinda crap, but I’m okay with it for my first (and only so far) tattoo. Edit: it’s unfortunate that this happened, but it happens with many fields where they overcharge. I’m holding off until I have more money. The only thing I can think is that people assume they are paying for quality. When you're getting art literally permanently put onto your skin, I'd sure as hell want the reassurance that they were actually good, and generally the price they charge is a good indicator of that (especially since artists tend to undervalue their work, rather than overvalue it). When you consider that she initially also thought that price was towards the overall cost of the tattoo, and not just the sketch, I think it becomes a little more reasonable. Still perhaps a bit pricey, but perhaps more reasonable for a very skilled artist doing a larger tattoo

In case no ones said it yet, a little history lesson on why every scandal is called "Something-gate" Picture it, the beautiful Washington District of Columbia (D.C), 1972, the Vietnam war was drawing to a close in a few years (finally, everyone sighed patriotically), Godfather was premiering in theaters, the Olympics were hosted in Germany and apparently it was the debut at McDonalds of the Egg McMuffin and the invention of the delicious ice tea drink, Snapple, what a time it was. It was ALSO the time of the administration of President Richard Nixon, also nicknamed 'Tricky Dick', he was the republican candidate, was very well loved (and controversial) president at the time, apparently was responsible for the most desegregation of schools in the country at the time, which is pretty cool, and was applauded for pulling troops out of Vietnam (though i'm sure everyone has different thoughts on THAT) BUT one dark and stormy night on June 17th, (maybe it wasn't that stormy it was june....) there they were lurking in the dark, agents of chaos, thieves and swine, breaking and entering into Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Washington DC, Watergate Office Building. A burglary, all 5 of the perps were arrested and after a subsequent investigation by the DOJ, connected the cash to (dun dun dun) The Committee for the Re-Election of the President! CRP, or CREEP as it was often mocked. Very sus, the investigation and revelations found during the trials of the burglars all lead the House and Senate to create the 'U.S Senate Watergate Committee.' It was the biggest scandal in decades, a giant rabbit hole of wiretapping, money laundering, political sabotage, hearings from key members of the administration, probing into the white house, impeachment, some of the best pieces of investigative journalism in history and the kidnapping of Martha Mitchell (that story is insane all by itself) then all of the trials being aired LIVE on PBS, free entertainment, the American people felt as if they were all involved, everyone had an opinion about the scandal. Not only did it seem like yes, The Nixon administration was very much involved in the Watergate burglary, and then subsequently broke many laws to cover the whole thing up, but the man was also just a general asshole and didn't even like his own voters and beat the shit out of his dogs (literally why even have a dog, Dick?) He later resigned in light of the House commencing an impeachment process, officially for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and Contempt of Congress. He was the only president to have resigned from office and was later pardoned by his successor President Gerald Ford (nobody liked that.) So there you have it! Watergate is now synonymous with any scandal because it was the name of the building where the burglary took place, it was HUGE and was honestly just good fun to watch while it lasted. I fucking love everything to do with Watergate because its literally a conspiracy that turned out to be TRUE. also everyone should watch the movie Dick its the fucking best.

Tattoo artists are like insurance companies. Get quotes from different places. Especially if it's your first one. Also, if you want one but think you can't handle the pain, apparently numbing cream exists??? I've never used it but I'd imagine it works lol. Now onto my personal experiences with permanent needle therapy: I have 7 tattoos so far, but I've never had an artist design one for me so I don't know if the shop I go to charges for that. If they do, I can guarantee it wouldn't cost anywhere near those prices. My most expensive tattoo was $280 (originally quoted to be $300 but it went a bit quicker than she expected). It takes up about half the underside of my forearm, is 5 colors, the stencil had so many lines that it made me dizzy, and that took about 2 hours to do. 6 of the tattoos I have are from the place she works at. My goal is to have art on me from everyone that works there lol. The 1 tattoo I got from a different shop is the only one I regret. I still like the design but the artist was new and it just...didn't go well haha. I'm loyal to the shop I got 6 from but they're not forcing me to be. The atmosphere there is chaotic in the best way, the shop is clean, and all the artists are good people. I'd name drop the place if I wasn't trying to keep some level of privacy online lol.

I did SO MUCH research on artists prior to getting my tattoo - and i mean I went to several shops and went through a lot of books. I chose my artist because he had the best lettering of all the artists (my tattoo is latin). He was EXPENSIVE. Cost me $500, but my tattoo is PERFECT. The lettering is mint, the spacing is perfect- it's beautiful. Granted, most of my friends have tattoos and they gave me recommendations on artists, but, ultimately, it was up to me. The gate thing is actually a reference to a scandal regarding an United States President in 1972, usually referred to as the Watergate Scandal. It was called that because long story short the Watergate Office Building (location of the opposing dominant party) was broken into in order to try and find dirt on other candidates. Usually at least here in the United States it’s a common suffix used in slang to refer to a big scandal (at least in an oversimplified sense). Hope this helps a little!
