Back in 2014 I bought my laptop (i7 4710HQ Windows 8.1 laptop) and I got 32GB of RAM at the time. It was an overkill, but at the same time I do believe it helped make it stay relevant for longer. Going for 128GB of RAM in 2023 feels overkill again. I don't think I would go for it, even if I could easily afford that. But having said that, I get why one would go for that much RAM. Don't get me wrong, the M3 is a decent processor with improvements over the M2. However, there is a BUT, the M2 is better from a performance / memory perspective and cheaper relative to the M3. Granted M3 is faster with more cores but how much difference is the VAST majority of people using these performance laptops are going to see? I use the M1 Pro and looking for an upgrade, and have to say, given what I do with data processing on complex engineering mechanics and dynamics problems/designs, I'd look for more memory. I say that because a colleague has got the M3 Pro, and we did a test to process some engineering data. We were surprisingly to find out the M3 was slightly quicker than the M1 (which had more memory than the M3). Considering the price, I may upgrade mine to a M2 Pro or Max just more processing power.

So I'm tempted to go M3 Max with 96gb ram because of the single core performance bump. For music production single core is, well, king. Especially for low latency operation stuff. Some virtual instruments believe it or not can still max out the M1max and cause it to crap out at low latency in certain situations. It's an edge case but I have a feeling that the 25% extra headroom in single core just might make a difference enough in those cases. Hearing you talk about loud fans on the M3, and also you mentioning how your m1max never spins up its fans, is making me seriously reconsider now. Silence is sacrosanct in the studio when recording. It's about on par with CPU headroom if not even more important. Just how loud are those fans? And do you happen to know if they trigger more because of the GPU utilization rather than CPU? Good overview though thanks.
@TausifHussain11 ай бұрын
That’s incredible man. In terms of the fans, I’m going to be testing it out this week and see how I can trigger them if at all possible and if it affects the 14” as well. Because I believe the fans sound was only picked up using the high power mode on the 16” which the 14 doesn’t even have. And if you keep high power mode off, would it result in no fan noise? I’m gonna have to test it this week!

I do think you’ll be able to game on a M3 Pro instead of an M3 Max, obviously with fewer fps. You’d probably have to reduce the graphics setting to 7, which is default anyway. I have played the game on an M1 Pro with 16GB of RAM and it plays just fine. If you want to save yourself some money, it’s not bad. It’s too bad WoW can’t take advantage of Metal 3’s ray tracing which would use the M3’s new features, so I leave that setting off. Oh well. I thought I wanted the space black until visiting a store today to make a separate purchase and had a chance to view them in person. The silver looked nice and clean and space black honestly looked disgusting. I’m so glad I looked at them in person first instead of making my decision after watching a multitude of videos.

Colour choice is very subjective. I've always had silver MBPs and I am absolutely loving the space black colour on my M3. I was getting pretty bored of the same old silver colour so the black (more like a darker space grey) is a fresh and more interesting colour (in my opinion of course...)

I agree with Mat, M1 Pro is fine. Mine is just the base 14" MBP Binned M1 Pro but I have no problems with everything, photo and video editing, designing, and programming. No problems at all. And the battery is just amazing, better than my 14 pro max. The best battery life I have on tech device. Like now, I am commenting this using the laptop, I charged this last Nov 9. Up to now I have 40%.

Macs memory is always full, no matter how much you have. It'll just fill up until it's needed then clear off the old shit. Its def a lot different than how windows and linux manage memory.

The 14 inch MBP is a really cool looking machine but I went with the 16 because it has better speakers, bigger fans, better cooling and more battery. And for certain use cases the M3 family will wipe the floor with the M2. (for me the killer app is Blender, where an M3 Max will render twice as fast than an M2 Max!)

Can you explain this in other words? I’m trying to decide between 64gb and 128gb ram
@timbukstu11 ай бұрын
Less than .01% of users benefit from 128gb or higher. If you work with image files with each one larger than 64gb all day, then go 128gb. Of course if that’s the case then one job maybe pays for your machine. It’s all about memory pressure and swap. If your memory pressure is green, you don’t need more. If you get stuttering a lot and the memory pressure is yellow then see if it really impacts your life. Maybe upgrade. If it’s red, then upgrade to more ram.

@timbukstu11 ай бұрын
@@revealhawaiimedia what percent of users do that? Patrick rambles a creator does 8k editing I think but he has a M1 max or M2max and isn’t upgrading to my knowledge. If you do 8k then go for 128gb. It’s just funny watching creators buy top line m3 max when they wouldn’t max out a M1 Max or M2 max.

For me I think it’s base max m3 with 1tb, it’s so much faster than the m3 pro, and if you’re going pro the m2 pro is so much better value. The maxed out max m3 is a lot louder and battery is worse but I haven’t seen any comparisons of 14 core vs 16 core m3 max, that’s what I would love to see.
@timbukstu11 ай бұрын
Look for a LLM model training KZbinr as they would be one of the few use cases to benefit from the increased memory bandwidth. Of course there are much better machines for LLM and ML than the m3 max.

Maybe I'm a niche case but although I game mostly on consoles, there are games that only come out on PC that I really want to play, like some boomer shooters, indie games, and yes, Baldurs Gate - games I refuse to play on a console, and good performance when playing those titles on Crossover is important for me, that's why I ordered the M3 Max. Still haven't received it. Wish the reviewers would actually benchmark some titles played through Crossover instead of just balking at the very idea of considering gaming when buying a Macbook. No, you don't buy a Macbook _for_ gaming, but it's a consideration for some people
@pedrothevenard11 ай бұрын
The amount you spend from a single jump from 512 gb storage to 2 Tb you can buy an entry level gaming laptop that will run circles on the macbook max on gaming, both in performance, titles available to play and quality of the display for gaming, the macbook has quite a bit of black smearing, blooming, and tearing since it wasn't developed for that. I understand that it's not practical to travel with 2 laptops, and that you likely just like powerful stuff, I do too, but unless you literally works traveling, spending a thousand dollars on a 4060 laptop with high refresh ips panel with sinc technology, is infinitely better than upscaling your macbook by a thousand dollars to game on the side.
@bury10011 ай бұрын
I used to have a desktop PC but found I didn't use it enough to justify it cluttering my space and gathering dust. As you say, two laptops are nonsensical as well from my point of view. I just just want everything centralised on one computer (console gaming being a separate thing for me). GeforceNow is frankly a really good alternative but it doesn't have all the games I wanted to play, so for those titles it was either Crossover or Shadow PC for me. Sadly the latency for Shadow, while good, is noticable. So I prefer to be able to run those titles locally, even if I do pay a premium for that (of course i also work on VMs on an everyday basis, so I can justify the extra investment). @@pedrothevenard

@@bury100 Macbooks really are not great for gaming, but I'm sure that if the titles you like are available on it, it will at least be great for some fun, I end up having 2 laptops, but that's me, my windows 3060 gaming laptop is close to a desktop since I just don't take it with me most of the time, the m1 base pro still is going great for the rest.
@bury10011 ай бұрын
Yeah I agree they are not ideal, I'm not trying to argue that Macs are good for gaming, though Crossover and games support is getting better. I don't play PC games enough to justify the hassle of two separate computers, hence I prefer to focus on a Mac with some gaming capabilities, but I admit it's a very personal thing and your mileage will vary :D @@pedrothevenard
