This is a very vulnerable song. She is afraid of losing him and trying to protect herself by knowing Cornelia Street is sacred ground for her because of how much it will remind her of this love. A part of her is trying to plan for it by saying I know I could never come back here if you leave me. It is a testament to her love and fear.

This is from the Lover album 2019. It's one of the songs about her 6 yr relationship that broke up in early 2023. Many fans (including myself) thought it would be way too painful to sing as a surprise song during the Eras Tour acoustic set - at least for several months. She did sing it once in August 2023 and you could tell it was still a little hard for her to get through it. She's had visible healing during the tour. A good comparison is of two times she sang "I Don't Want to Live Forever". In June 2023 it is heartbreaking to watch her especially at the "wondering if I dodged a bullet or just lost the love of my life?" Her face is pained, her voice broke, and she's trying to not cry. But she sang it again in March 2024 and got through it basically with a happy face and it was wonderful to see that difference. EDIT TO UPDATE: She played Cornelia Street + Maroon at N1 Liverpool (June 2024) and looked great. Happy to see that change!

Cornelia Street is where she was renting a place while her apartment home was being renovated in Tribeca. This is when she and Joe were just new. He was spending a lot of time in NY. She had been so thoroughly trashed by Kim and Kanye that she fled to London and started working on the Reputation album. There’s some pieces that talk about her and Joe’s beginning in London. After Reputation, she started writing more upbeat and optimistic songs for Lover. Obviously, this one still sounds tentative about new relationships. The Tribeca place was finished and she moved. Her relationship with Joe was apparently lots of ups and downs. He needed someone who liked to hide out and be private. She was Taylor freaking Swift and that was never going to be practical. Covid gave them more time like all of us, and she got busy with Aaron Dessner creating not one, but 2 albums during this time. I couldn’t even count on one hand how many times I saw Joe and Taylor together. They just weren’t meant to be each others person and I think he was moody which was terrible for someone who could be a little insecure because you start thinking it’s you. Then, she rebounded to Matty which was a disaster and thankfully short lived. Then , Travis Kelce was like lightening and joyful and I think they had a lot of time to talk to figure out if they were on the same path and wanted the same things and got to really have conversations before she showed up at Arrowhead Stadium and shocked everyone. There’s nothing like compatibility and absolute electric attraction. He’s super confident and easy going. He’s important in a different field, so they have different things to discuss. It’s just lovely to see and some songs will naturally fade away from her repertoire

I took it as getting to know each other really well - bc it was when first started dating & spending a lot of time together. She's grown...who would she need to sneak from in her own apt? Lol. If a public place, not inside her apt, I'd be more inclined to accept your interpretation.🤔✌️

If a man stands next to her, she'll see in the magazines the next day "watch out x guy". She's sneaking around to outmaneuver the paparazzi so she can get to know people in peace without the insanity.
