I interpreted the side door as like at a cinema or theatre you leave the side door during a movie you are bored of or dont wanna watch anymore. Just quietly slipping through the side door while the movie continues is like leaving a toxic relationship when you know it’s not going anywhere and you can Predict the end line of the relationship. So you just abandon it like abandoning a movie.

yes, and it keeps the same metaphor of a film used throughout for great cohesion in the great lyrics, in this case referencing that she didn't like the ending. Beautiful stuff.

Especially since there's other film/theatre lyrics "like he's just your understudy" and "I think I've seen this film before". Or maybe it's like when you're in a play and your scene is over and you discretely leave through the side door on the stage?

i really like the interpretation about the side door. in a relationship, the side door wasn't the obvious one, no one ever thought it is the right answer/door. both side only thinks about the front door or the back door. as if the side door never existed in the beginning. it's hard to explain lol.
@charlottepettigrew58254 жыл бұрын
I always interpreted it as the side door at the movie theatre - because just before Taylor sings this, the lyrics are "I think I've seen this film before and I didn't like the ending." So Taylor says "Now I'm leaving out the side door." because she is just going to abandon the film playing and not even bother to see it through - like this metaphorical relationship.
@callumsawyer1774 жыл бұрын
For me, the side door is like an escape exit. You don't expect to use it, only in a state of emergency.

I interpreted the side door line differently. The main idea of the song is how they’ve seen this film before. They don’t like it. In theaters, when you dislike a play or movie, or are just bored, you quietly sneak out the side door. This also ties to her “understudy” reference as it connects to theatre and films. It’s like abandoning a movie midway because you can already see that it’s not worth your time.

I think the language, the words they use are key as well to understand the POV of each part. Like, he is using word references as defending his homeland, the town and exile, almost like a soldier depicting his mission. She instead, seeing herself as a problem but he was his crown, he made her feel like a queen but noticed as well how she was his demise. They spoke in completely different ways trying to convey the same but that's exactly what broke them and she run through the side door in five minutes. Then this song happens when they run into each other in some random situation where he finally gets his opportunity to ask why she left and she tries to explain, once again (second, third, hundreth) but he still doesn't understand and they engage in a final fight, a never ending story hurting each other, starting to reply eaches other arguments. Destined to be like this forever if they stay together so she just leaves, at the end of the song she doesn't reply anymore and he asks for the warning sign, fading out the song 'cause the signs are still there he just can't see them or even hear her out and she leaves once again for good. I can relate to her, sadly. It's hard to take the side door 'cause the other person made you feel so powerful and great but never understood the signs, the languaje... so even it it hurts you need to move on and take care of oneself. It shouldn't be offensive to try to love again and move on.

Hey you guys, I really like your interpretation on the "side door" thing. For me it sounds like when the relationship has a beginning and an end and you walk until the end it is like dragging the inevitable out. Like when you repeat and repeat and repeat the mistakes you made until you are both worn out and it is nothing left of you. So she chooses to leave through the side door. For me it means that she sees the destructive type of relationship with "second, third, and hundredth chances balancin' on breaking branches" that is destined to end at some point and instead of letting that happen, she ends it before they are both completely destroyed... Don't know, that's what I get from it. Really haunting lyrics and I love the two sides singing their perspectives to another. Best wishes from Germany, Hannah

Betty: James POV explaining how it was just a “summer fling” and that he has never really moved on. 3. August: The girl’s POV whom James cheated with. August is a song about unrequited love. I love your interpretation of the side door line. I have a similar one: I think she saw the realationship in the early stages as something certain, you know? Like "Ok, so this begins with them in the front door and the back door for her at first could have been they being forever happy or passing away eventually by growing old together. But in the middle of the realationship they had struggles, stuff happened and she had to leave through the side door because she realised that they wouldn't reach the back door one day as she used to think they would. 💔😰

The first verse sounds more like he’s a potentially abusive ex who thinks she’s really still his. Understudy being the person who stands for the main actor of a play temporarily. Leaving by side door implies that she doesn’t want to be followed by him. She’s says I’m not yours so who am I offending? As in why should who I am dating be anything to do with you. Add that to the reference that she thinks he might be violent against this person. Lots of red flags. She can’t even just leave. She has to remove herself from his life before he even really knows she’s gone. Then add “warning signs”.
