I wish people would just be content with certain types of vocalists. Not everyone has to be a broadway belter. I don’t want that the vast majority of the time. I love a variety of voices and textures and strengths and power. There are so many different ways to sing, and I think sometimes we miss out on enjoying certain artists because they don’t have some kind of endless range.

@TopNotchWatcher87
@TopNotchWatcher87 Ай бұрын
Yes, Taylor’s a master as her writing, but she has also become an amazing singer over the years IMO. She’s no Adele or Ariana, but her range, those low notes, how she sings, her grit, her emotions she uses with her singing more than make up for it.

When you ask yourself "how do I know this song already?" --- that, to me, is part of the reason she is so successful. She writes songs that weasel into your brain whether you make active efforts to learn them or not.
@ZATennisFan
@ZATennisFan Ай бұрын
It's more than that. To me Taylor is one the most prolific writers of what I call "eternal songs" that I've ever heard. By eternal I mean that her best songs sound familiar the first time you hear them. It's like the song has always existed and Taylor discovered it, unearthed it and gifted it to the world. But going forward every time you listen to the song it's new and fresh. Then on top of that her best songs never lose their impact. You know what's coming, you prepare your defenses but the song slips past your defenses and pierces your soul again. Not many people can write those types of songs and almost nobody has done it as often as Taylor. She is able to tap into something both profoundly personal and universal at the same time.
@TheBlackSpeed
@TheBlackSpeed Ай бұрын
I think a lot of it too is that we have to give ourselves credit as well. I hear amazing writers all the time, it doesn't mean the song sticks with me. I think WE allow ourselves to be open to new things, new sounds, new ways of viewing music, and if it resonates and hit that sweet spot, there is nothing like it. I give Taylor credit for writing a song that resonated with me, but give myself credit that I allowed it to sit in my spirit. You know? We're just as impactful to her as she is to us. :) How I keep the power when it comes to artists that leave an impression on me haha.

@@TheBlackSpeed that’s so true! It’s so funny for instance when I first heard Janelle Monáe‘s music, my friend was suggesting it and making me listen to it so I wasn’t as open to it at the time. Years later however after her second or third album I started listening (by some algorithm suggestion probably 😆) and got totally obsessed with all of her music, including the stuff, I didn’t care for that my friend tried to get me to listen to years prior. That’s something I’ve noticed in myself over the years I have to work on being open to outside suggestions because most of the time I think I know best and everyone else is wrong 😝 😂

All of Taylor’s songs sound good acoustic because that’s the way she writes them. Most of her songs are also better performed live because they switch up the production for the live shows and it’s usually 🔥. Because she writes all of her own songs they are all deeply personal to her. It’s why so much emotion comes through, and a big reason people connect to her music.

I think when people who don't follow Taylor and are set on to not listen to her music don't understand how she has sooooo many fans because vocally she is not Adele, Beyoncé or Ariana, and in terms of dancing she is not Britney. But the thing is the reason why she attracts so many people is because she is an amazing songwriter. As fans we have never claimed she is the best vocalist in the world or that she is on the same level as icons like idk Whitney, we just don't deny she has a great voice, a pleasing one. But he real talent and what we highlight the most are her lyrics. It's just that people don't give her the chance because the commercial songs overpower songs like this one. At the end of the day what sells, sells, but I'm happy I haven't deprived myself from the rest of her music.

@ also Gen X, also 80’s Goth/punk! I am not a writer, though, and for me it’s the way she is able to describe feelings with words. Things I haven’t been able to verbalize and then I’m like Yes! That, exactly! Her writing is really empathetic. And smart. She’s very humble for being as huge as she is and she seems to really want to learn about how to perform different genres without seeming like she’s trying too hard to be something she’s not. Her voice is underrated, though, in my opinion. It was pretty and airy when she first started and as she’s grown up it’s really matured into a great instrument. That’s just my take, though!

I’m a new Patreon subscriber and really enjoying your videos! So appreciate your positivity and willingness to expand your perspective on Taylor and her music! I suggest any of the Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions on Disney Plus are worth watching even if you’ve reacted to the originals. ESPECIALLY: This Is Me Trying and Epiphany…. the backstories mean everything to these songs. In all honesty, This Is Me Trying got me through the hardest year of my life before I was even a fan of Taylor at all. The lyrics cut deep and mean so much to so many for different reasons. That’s what’s amazing about Taylor’s ability to not only write introspective time capsules but also look outside herself and empathize with others’ struggles and validate feelings about so many different issues. She is an amazingly powerful artist. She really has proved throughout her career how much her fans mean to her. Even looking back to her earliest interviews, she’s always known what a priceless privilege her fame would be and has been, and she’s never once taken advantage of that selfishly. One thing I always like to ask my friends that haven’t explored her music history is have you ever heard one negative story about her interacting with a fan…? The answer has always been no. I’ve never heard of one negative interaction of her with a fan, which is saying something considering how many years she has been in the spotlight and stalked by paparazzis. She is a truly wonderful artist, and she has always been mature beyond her years.

If you wanna hear lives with great vocals (lots of belting) I recommend 1) out of the woods 1989 tour 2)we’re never getting back together 1989 tour 3) are you ready for it reputation tour intro, if you wanna raw and simple vocals live: 1) False God SNL show 2) out of the woods at Grammy Museum 3) her cover of Riptide Also, she’s not a soprano and that’s what we usually say are great singers, but she has a great lower register that not many women can do that well and that clean and effortless, so in my opinion, for these style of songs it’s actually perfect and she sings it perfectly.

You may already know this, but the long pond studio sessions have a part before she sings where she's talking about the track. She goes more in depth about what the song is about and that's probably what was being suggested for you to watch.

Thank you! I obviously have preferences, but to be honest, I don't give a rats ass which of Taylor's songs you do, but I absolutely suggest you choose live versions where possible, her Tiny Desk acoustic set is ace, as is her Grammy Museum set from 2015. Seeing her sing them as she wrote them (acoustically, on guitar, piano [or banjo] you get to see her emotions, she has a very expressive face and watching her "tell her own lyrical stories" adds another dimension. Now I'm waffling. You know what I mean. All the Long Pond sessions are definitely worth watching. Christmas love from Annie, in Cornwall (‘cos I live here)🙂🌸🎄

Bob Dylan. Top tier songwriter, sounds like an alley cat caught in a fence when singing. Taylor isn't a perfect singer but she spent years working on it during her younger (vulnerable to complaints) years and she's pretty good now. I agree though, the acoustic Taylor when she doesn't try and project her voice are fantastic.

I appreciate a musical artist's actual artistry more than their singing ability. Most of my favorite artists are not great singers by any traditional standards. I rarely hear comments about a man being a better songwriter than he is a singer or that he isn't a great dancer, such as the obvious examples of Bob Dylan, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen. I mean, I also get that those examples aren't pop stars while female pop stars are expected to be able to sing, dance, and be sexy instead of just being great artists in whatever way that manifests. That said, I love Taylor's voice and this performance is probably my favorite vocal from her.

On the surface it's about a love/personal relationship, on the next level it's about Scooter Braun selling her music catalog out from under her!"you had to kill me but it killed you just the same"!...BTW, Scooter Braun just left the music industry...after Taylor is rerecording all her music to get the rights back.

There is generally a very big gap between what radio wants and what an already fan wants. If anyone isn’t familiar with stickiness, the tracking says that if a song is too different from what a station “normally plays” then listeners will leave the channel/station. The longer they stay the more money the radio station makes. A fan of the artist doesn’t care about that as much because they are likely to stay on the song regardless but radio stations appeal to the masses because that’s where their money is.

I think she's better live because all of her lives are different. It's like she never performs it quite the same twice. You can really feel the passion in her live performances. I think that's mostly because she's a hell of a performer and it's just her wheelhouse.

IMO, I think the live/acoustic versions of songs are better because we both hear and see more emotion than we do once backing vocals and ad libs are added to the track. It’s much more raw and emotional this way, so as people whose favorite part of music is lyricism and the meanings, we get to feel everything much deeper.

I'm a new Swiftie of less than 2 years. I get obsessed & follow rabbit holes BIG TIME. I'M VERY weary of Taylor reactions because i think most do it for LIKES. Having said that, i feel you are genuine in your reactions. I also will say that from the research I've done, she considers herself a songwriter FIRST over a singer (but she has absolutely worked at that process & gotten better) I've followed those that focus on songwriting, guitar skills, world building in lyrics etc. I've come to this conclusion: MOST won't understand Taylor because they just can't due to media stories feom early early on. They simply stay in the "Taylor ONLY writes songs on relationships" 1. So? She's not the only one. 2. She's so much more than that & 10 years down the line? Everyone will realize it. 3. She's that good. 4. I was wrong until i decided to DO.THE.WORK.

It's very easy for me to pick artists just to get the views I know it'll get, but I don't do ANYTHING I don't personally like. This journey has been a fun one, and the discussions have been great. So yeah, we're definitely going to keep going. :)

I prefer the tone of her voice. It’s raw and unique. She isn’t trying to trill every dang opportunity. She’s a totally different kind of singer than Adele types. Nothing against Adele but Whitney will always hold that crown and so everyone else is just a fill in to me. Taylor is not those ladies and doesn’t pretend to be, which I find refreshing. You know how if you see someone very pretty but they are jerks and that actually ends up making them less attractive. She’s the opposite. She’s not the best singer but her her writing, live performances and soul makes her PHENOMENAL to me. ❤

The live version is usually better because production usually cuts down on imperfections which humans love, and also usually has waaaay more effects which affects the levels and can almost sound more "one note". they need it to be "user friendly" so like... you wont see as many volume changes. Notice how in this version there are pretty large volume gaps, very soft then very dynamic, it really adds to the drama... but you dont want people scared in their cars 😂

I wanted to chime in with regard to your feelings on why artists often make a studio/radio version and then a live recording such as this one. They record an original version because they know it’s what the studio, stations, charts, expect and want. Mass market craves want they can produce and sell and they want the same quality shit as usual. So artists have blanket control over what is released and what it sounds like, until recently. With these live session albums give artist the opportunity to create unedited music, versions of their own songs how they feel they should be performed. Making the songs richer in sound, more personal in feeling, and truly authentic in production. The LPS album gave us an unfettered sense of what she wanted folklore to fully convey.

Came for Taylor, staying for the humor and honesty 😂🤣 Regarding your question/statement about the studio production vs live, I honestly think it's done purposely, there's so many beautiful elements in folklore (studio) ☺️ Taylor is also known for re-imagining her songs It keeps it so exciting because we never know what we'll get! Personally, I love having all these variations because i can always find one that fits my mood 🤷‍♀️ lol If you're down for more live reactions and a great example of a reimagined song: We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together from the 1989 tour She went from straight pop to rock lol

I respect your opinion with her ability to sing, but sometimes slow and steady without all of the extra notes is just as good. Her voice has come a long way, and her Eras tour concert proves this. She’s a powerhouse in her own way, but in a way that fits her. She’s iconic, and thank you for sharing! 😊
