Trust me when I say this Taylor. Fix EVERYTHING that it needs & maintain the shit out of it. These are one of the best generations of Duramax. I owned an LLY & it was the best purchase I've ever made. Bought a crew cab short bed SLT brand new & within 200 miles I did a 4" lift - 18x12 wheels - 35" Toyo M/T's - deleted, chipped & tuned + 5" turbo back exhaust & put over 150,000 miles on it. Most comfortable/reliable tow rig I've ever owned. I'd trade in my LP5 for a brand new LLY in a heartbeat.
@jamessweeten69265 жыл бұрын
Keeping the engine stock and without a tune is what has kept that truck going. From years working in a shop I see it all the time where guys buy a truck and put a big race tune on it and blow up the transmission or blow head gaskets or worse.
@bryanglenn1235 жыл бұрын
I agree! Keep it stock! GM did well with that design!
@jaredanthony80705 жыл бұрын
You answered your own question as to why you see them blown up. "Race tune" stock trucks can be great. A truck with an intake exhaust and small tune can make them have even better longevity than stock. With egr's dpf and def systems it can become more problematic faster and far more expensive to fix. To delete it it will get better milage and have less under hood heat as well as longevity not breathing it's own shit. Yes a race tune on a stock truck is asking for breaking things. But a decent tune on a truck with a couple mods and possibly a trans rebuild with a few upgrades like a 6 speed conversion from someone like duramax tuner. The 5 speeds on occasion would burn up clutches but built they are fine. The lly also would occasionally overheat too under certain conditions even bone stock. It was rare though. The lbz (06-07)was basically flawless other than minor interior issues like this had and the lmm(07.5-10) had some interior issues but very minor and shared engine architecture with the lbz. Lbz's will crack pistons with big tunes but stock or "tastefully" tuned and modified they are great. Saying tuning is bad basically is a huge misconception because of those diesel douchebags who crank it to tune 11 and blow them up 4 times before moving on saying all diesels are trash
@jamessweeten69265 жыл бұрын
@@jaredanthony8070 I'd put money on a stock setup lasting much longer (engine and trans) than even a mild tune and supporting mods. You can change shift points for towing but then you deal with higher trans fluid temps (unless it's manual of course) and if you put a tune on the engine all you are doing is dumping more fuel causing higher egt's and putting extra stress on the stock turbo. It's a rabbit hole... I care for fleet vehicles mostly and some of the trucks see heavy abuse. We tried the tuner thing with a few vehicles (per customer request) trying to get better fuel economy/ better towing ability and it ended up costing them more money in the long run. If you plan on trading in evey 2 years then sure! but adding a tune, exhaust and intake to a truck that already has 200k miles is just asking for trouble
@jaredanthony80705 жыл бұрын
@@jamessweeten6926 it's not just dumping more fuel in. It's small amounts across the map to make it run more powerfully efficient. It changes injector timing to burn better at a higher compression moment. You remove restrictions from the exhaust and free up the exhaust flow letting the turbo breathe easier reducing drive pressure. You put an intake on reducing egts. At the same time full delete the truck removing what emissions equipment it has further reducing egts. Less restrictions in and out mean better flow and cooler air. You work on fleet trucks. Trucks that are beat to shit every day by someone who has zero investment in it. It doesn't matter what you or the company does to them they still will be floored up every hill getting that trailer to where it needs to be no matter what those gauges say. Trans could be welding its clutches together and they would just push the pedal harder. Mild tunes with proper modifications will improve milage and longevity in a personal vehicle. Emissions equipment especially kills vehicles faster than anything when properly maintained and used by normal people. A full delete and "stock" tunes will be a safe bet for longevity. Stock from the factory trucks are only tuned to run the cleanest emissions they can. It may include a huge lean curve in fuel maps which could become an issue. It could run them at a high temperature to help burn more carbon dioxide per cf of air. They don't necessarily tune them for longevity. There is a 1 million mile lml duramax fully deleted that went around recently. It is bone stock other than the delete and supportive mods and the few things that failed along the way like alternators. Its not just stock but what it rolled out of the factory with. New engines are becoming more reliable and if it wasnt for the emission equipment which engineers themselves say is what will be the death of those engines they could last for as long as they are maintained really.

LLY were known for HG even on stock trucks. GM dropped the ball and added a EGR cooler without upgrading the rest of the cooling system and put a shitty turbo mouth piece on them. Remove the EGR cooler and swap out the mouth piece and you're usually good to go. There are of course exceptions...usually people who don't tow or don't tow heavily. That's why HG issues are mostly on 04.5-05 trucks. 06 LLYs had the upgraded cooling that the LBZ got.

Good video. As a 30 year auto tech, nearly 20 of it for GM. I have not seen a ton of the supposedly "known for" problems that people always say. Since 2001 I may have replaced 6 sets of injectors and one set didn't cure the problem on an 02 lb7. Ended up being the injector cups. Only 1 Allison issue but that was caused by neglect. The gentleman knew he had a leak but kept driving it anyways.

Good thing you got a good year. My dad has a 2002 crewcab, 2500, about 120k miles, owned it since 2004. For the past year or so, fuel has been leaking into the crankcase, he changes the oil about every two months even though we only drive it now to tow stuff. We just towed a 6500lb 89 Chevy loaded with toolboxes and tools and it handled like a champ. But don't think for a second we didn't have a backup vehicle. They want insane money at the dealer to change the injectors, recall or not, and he's not even sure if that's the problem. Either he's going to run it til it dies or trade it in.

Without watching I know it was a great decision. D max is a hell of a truck. I have a 09 Lmm dually Duramax. I bought the trick brand new. I now have almost 300k miles. Been perfect. Best truck I’ve ever owed. I’ve had power strokes and Cummins and gas trucks. D max.

My truck was deleted and tuned around 45k miles. First with a quadzilla stealth 2. Then efi live. Definitely efi is better. No problems what so ever. I leave it on the power tune and daily drive it easy. I try to keep it under 2,700 rpm. Fun truck.

You should watch LSXMatt's Tahoe video on fixing his seats. He was able to buy replacement leather and a seat heater.

Mbrp 5in with cat/muffler delete. You’ll gain about 1mpg. And it sounds absolutely amazing. Don’t be afraid of the drone it’s minimal.

My 04 1500 had the blend door issue and got stuck out of defrost vents. It eventually killed my AC compressor. I ended up selling the truck, because I couldn't stand driving it in Florida in the middle of the summer in a black extended cab.

Taylor, you're pretty crafty, build a truck bed roller, that way you don't have to crawl in there to get the stuff in the back. You can just roll it out.

Mine was a yes and no good buy. Bought it with 206,000. Soon after purchase I was told after it derated towing that I needed injectors. Knowing what I know now I’ll make sure any Duramax I find with higher miles will have some history of injectors replacement unless I get a good deal on it. Miles don’t scare me on a Duramax, Cummins, or a 7.3 powerstroke although a friend says the 6.7 powerstroke has been a good engine. I prefer the 5.9 Cummins to the 6.7 Cummins. All said I love diesel pickups lol.

If you haven’t washed the car in awhile. It could be effecting your A/C. A dirty condenser will greatly reduce the efficiency/performance. Or you could just evacuate, flush refill it.

If you clean the AC Condenser in front of the radiator, it will help your AC problems.

The only duramax I really dislike the LLY Known for overhearing and sometimes even the turbocharger goes out due to the turbo intake manifold being too short and that why the turbo in the LLY has bad throttle response but the rest is pretty good as far as I know
@Toddford15685 жыл бұрын
The duramax is a good truck my bosses 06 3500 lbz drives like a dream and his has intake exhaust and a wicked wheel in the turbo but cheetah turbos are really nice on those trucks, also if your ac isnt getting cold enough it could be a issue with the condenser heat soaking due to lack of airflow or the orface valve. Or it could have to little or too much freon.

A drunk driver destroyed my daily (ek hatch owned for 9 years); in need of something that could replace it that I would actually like ...I'm looking at a LBZ ex.cab s.bed. -Glad you posted this and said dailying it is not overly cumbersome and to just send. Tacomas are nice smaller trucks, but for the full size I will most likely go for it on the duramax (I will look back and probably laugh treating my ek like a pickup, I had the carpets and rear seat out -throwing mountainbikes into the back ..ski's to the woods ..my KA24de to the machine shop.

Wow..what a beautiful piece of land you have!!! How awesome to have all that land with a huge workshop!!! I'd rather have the set up like you have..small house with huge shop and lot's of land!! Not that your house is small, I don't mean anything bad!! So I'm looking at a 2005 2500 Sierra Duramax 4 door...looks about like yours but 4 full doors...246,000 miles....but still the interior is MINT..even though it's leather which I HATE, it's not torn or even wrinkled! It's perfect! I am guessing the miles were highway since the seats show no wear from entry/exit...Would you dare to say that with that high a mileage that most expensive things have been replaced such as injectors? Or do they last that long? Thanks! FL here too..Brandon.
