I want you to get paid and I want to see whatever it is that you need to THRIVE in whatever space you are. Edit: It brought me to tears reading everyone be enthusiastically supportive of Taylor getting paid for whatever she does 💕 so often people with chronic illnesses get told that if they can't be productive and generate income that they are less than but we want you to do what is best for your physical and mental health 😭😭💕

You hit it on the head when you said work is not life. My coworker’s dad worked a ridiculous number of hours at work. He finally retired and six months later, he was dead of a heart attack. My friend said he was from a generation where the position of being the provider of the household weighed heavily on him. You can’t change someone like that when it’s been ingrained in them, but he is a good example of not being able to get your time or health back. You are on a good path and you’ve recognized what’s the most important in life. I commend you. 💕

A lot of people do die shortly after retirement. It’s really awful when you sit and think about it. You work your butt off so you can “live life” when you’re old but all that work, stress catches up on us and then we spent our lives working for a life we never got to live. 😭 It’s the work culture here and it’s awful for us as humans. Great for someone else maybe but not most of us. So sad.

Taylor, young lady, I'm so proud of you. I'm 56 and have suffered with migraines/chronic neuralgia headaches, and psoriatic arthritis for most of my adult life. I did eventually retire early because of my health and it was such a difficult time. The feeling of worthlessness and depression from not feeling like a productive member of society was awful. It took a full 2 years for me to break out of that cycle. You are right, we put so much focus on work in America that we don't know how to act when it's not there anymore. Even though we constantly talk about when we will one day retire and can do all the things we haven't done because we work too damn much. But, I do believe all things happen for a reason. I'm a grandma and I love it. I have 8 grandkids and two have special needs. I have been able to redirect and focus on them and there is no way I could have helped the way I wanted and worked a full time job and manage health issues. My family is definitely my number one priority now and it is so fulfilling.

This is what I suffer with now, exactly how you said…the feeling of worthlessness from not being productive and working. And it’s just my husband and I, so the guilt that I’m not contributing…so while I feel better physically and mentally because I’m not under the crushing stress I was before, I feel like I’ve lost my identity. I often talk to my husband about how in the US we're taught to work from age 4 to 18. That's what school is essentially for but you have to go to school from age 4-18, then typically college to get to your specific trade, which most people go into debt for and never end up using, only to work until we're 65. We spend so much time doing shit we don't want to do just for survival because legally we cannot provide the things humans need for survival without money. Most of us don't live until retirement. The culture also measures success off career instead of love wnd things and money instead of people. I'm not sure I'm doing my children the best having them follow this idk.

We homeschool our kids and I was homeschooled. So school doesn't feel like a draining burden like work. We try to keep it fun, keep it something they're passionate about. If they hit burnout then we take a little break and hit a museum or hands on aquatic center. I don't want my kids to feel like they're burned out on life before it even really begins. We're also teaching them that work is needed, the world doesn't work if people aren't doing the jobs, but pick one you love even if it doesn't pay a ton. My oldest wants to be a zoologist. They don't make a ton, but they make enough. With financial know how they can live before retirement and still retire. Say no to workaholic culture ahaha

Taylor, I can really appreciate what you're saying here. About 5 years ago I ended up with a supervisor who made my life absolute hell. She made the decision to never get married or have children and her entire world revolved around work. She did not like anyone who thought differently than her and couldn't understand when I told her that my daughter was my number one priority. Her and I did not get along from that moment moving forward. The stress that she was causing me flared up my migraines to the point where I was having two a week , sometimes even three. I realized right then and there that I work to live, I don't live to work. My job is a means to pay my bills and nothing more. My home life is where my heart is and that's what's most important. I'm so glad that you finally came to that point in your journey, you seem so much happier and healthier and I'm sure everyone here would agree that this is the Taylor you should be. You need to put yourself first and enjoy your life otherwise what's the point?

I remember SO WELL a S&S in your beautiful Seattle apartment where you got vulnerable and said “if I could only have ONE DAY a week”… as a healthy, able bodied person that was tough to listen to. For me, that video lead to me having a huge realization that I know NOTHING about your world; I knew nothing about chronic illness and pain. Honestly, that video stuck with me and made a huge impact with my outlook on COVID, on the importance of health, on the impact I can have on others…. I’m really glad you made that video and I’ve thought about it often. Since then I, like many others, have noticed a change in you. You haven’t mentioned your pain much compared to what was normal before. I’ve wondered a lot of you’ve been “hiding” it more or if your health has improved. Especially with traveling so much. It must be so weird for you to read that random people are so “concerned” or aware of your health. I don’t mean to come across as creepy or hyper aware of you. Just know that you made a lasting impression on how I value health; mine and others and that came at SUCH an important time in the world. So thank you. 💜💜

This conversation hit me hard! I’m 45 and only in the last four months have had a manageable streak re: migraines, head pain, neck pain. 40 years of missing out on life, not to mention fatigue and anxiety from pain, depression feeling like this is it. This is my life. Seeing you cry over the same swing of sensations- losing days to pain vs overwhelming appreciation for a day without- very relatable and validating to see it in someone else. Hang in there, every migraine patient is different so I won’t “should all over you,” as my friend would say. Best of luck and wishing continued days outside enjoying those moments.

Great video and great insight Taylor! I used to have a job where I was on-call 24/7 (no joke), and often would have to board a plane and fly across the country very short notice. I was committed to that job for similar reasons as you were to KZbin; my pay was super good/high, the work was mostly rewarding, and I did get to travel. After some time, I realized the work was affecting every other aspect of my life, and that despite having what many would consider the American dream (a large and newer home in a great neighbourhood, several vehicles, eating out often, etc etc). My marriage was hurting, I was not the person I had been prior to this job, and I did not like who I was now. My mental health had also taken an EXTREME nosedive. At some point it occurred to me that all resources in this life are replaceable. Money. Housing. Vehicles. Food. Granted, not everyone can replace those things easily if lost, but they ARE replaceable. There is only one resource you can NEVER get more of: TIME. I had wasted nearly a decade (which was also my 20s/youth) on this awful job that really did nothing tangible for me, and was ruining the best thing in my life. So I quit. I moved. My marriage is better and stronger than ever. I earn half now what I did then, but I work for a good company in a nice position that only requires and requests 40 hours a week of my life, which right now is half or sometimes nearly a third(no joke used to do 100hr weeks) of what I was giving to my previous job. If I had an opportunity to return to the old life, I never would. There's just not enough money in the world for me to sacrifice any more of my time with my partner and my youth/health/mobility.

Or why you have to work so hard to enjoy something fun because of being shamed later. That's been one of my biggest issues. Personally I gave up the religion I suffered in for years, and now have a wfh job. That has made my life so much better. I still need to work on the physical part, I did great last year with PT after surgery but then went back to work, commuting etc. Now that the weather will chill out and I'm at home all day I am going to make a goal of 20 mins of activity at least once a day. I'm happy for you Taylor ❤️

Ouf that was a good cry for me too... ❤️ As soon as you started talking about trying to break free from the cycle, I lost it with you. I live with chronic pain as well from an auto-inflammatory disease and I 💯 know that physical and mental stress relief activity does amazing things to reduce inflammation but getting going when you're down is so hard. But being grateful for the good days, like you said... Being grateful to have the money to do physio twice a week, go to therapy every two weeks, having a great support system, etc... It's everything. Thank you for sharing your journey... After years and years of watching your videos and being on a similar journey, I continue to be reminded that I'm not alone. I hope you always remember that you are not alone... You have an actual army of subscribers who live with chronic pain that are here to support you. We've got this, Taylor. 💛

As someone who has struggled with mental illness, is newly diagnosed with ADHD, and a graduate student in a PhD program, I was definitely in that position where I was so unhappy and struggling every day. Recently I decided to leave my PhD program early and take a master's degree because I needed to take care of my mental health and find something I truly enjoyed doing. After moving through the shame of having to "quit", I quickly am seeing the horizon and am now excited to move on with my life and take care of myself. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences in this video, it's wonderful to hear that you've been having better days and continue to put yourself and your health first!! ❤️❤️❤️

This is absolutely THE best video for my exact time right now. I had started a new job about 4 months ago and it has absolutely burned me to the ground. Daily I stress when I’m not at work because I’m constantly contacted and I never feel disconnected. I’ve been struggling so much with how to break that feeling of importance within a job to enjoy myself, and I don’t even know who I am. When I’m not at work I can’t find myself to do anything that brings me joy and it makes me so sad I feel like I waste my days. I’ll definitely be looking into the books you’ve recommended to help me more. I appreciate the transparency so much because everybody struggles and in solidarity you are helping so many people in the long run. Thank you 💕

Thanks so much for opening up about having a chronic health condition and chronic pain. It is something difficult to understand if you don’t have it, like most things in life. I am in the chronic pain “sisterhood” and it is heartening to hear how you manage it all and still live your dream of the nomad life. Congratulations Taylor, you know what an achievement that is. I love watching your “chilled” videos. We worry too much about what others think - or rather, what we think they think. Continue to live your dream Taylor and spend time with your loved ones. It cost me my career and like you, I was a workaholic and finding my identity after no longer being able to work the way I was used to doing was such a huge struggle. Delegating even to my husband was difficult for me. Therapy was a Godsend for me and I have since prioritized my health and being a good mom first and finding joy in the times I feel better. Hearing you talk about how something small can impact our lives vs it being a big impact on someone else’s is awesome. My roommate has arthritis and between switching jobs and insurance issues was off of his medication for months. Our washer/dryer is downstairs and I was down there and saw his laundry was done in the wash and I put it in the dryer and he was so thankful because he didn’t have to try to walk down stairs to do it. And it breaks my heart how much those small gestures and help mean to someone with chronic pain and illness 🥺

Love this ♥️ I can’t imagine what it’s like being vulnerable on the internet but you have done it with such grace. I have been a workaholic for all of my 20’s, I turned 30 this year and something in me has changed. I’m obviously still working and making sure I operate at a high level but I have cut myself to 45-50 hours a week and hope to get to 40-45 by 2023, but it has felt so unbelievably relieving. I hate that the society we live in glorifies overworking yourself to death. I don’t suffer from chronic pain thankfully (I’m so sorry that you do) but I feel so much less tense and stressed, I’ve been traveling more and I feel more alive this year. I’m so happy that you’ve had enough self awareness to make the necessary changes to a healthier lifestyle. Love love seeing you travel to the south where I’ve grown up! Keep reaching for those happy chemicals ♥️

I once heard something like “when you study medicine, you often study a cell or specific organ in silo, but the body is not just one part isolated, so you miss how all the other cells and organs impact one another positively and negatively!” It makes so much sense. I’ve been on this same journey and getting my mind & gut in a more balanced place has truly reduced the instances of my own chronic pain by like 80%. It’s so hard to hear when you know you have a diagnosable identifiable issue, but it’s crazy how reduced your reactions can be to the same medical issue when your mind is in a better state.

I remember that video when you said all you wanted was one day and my heart just broke. My sister deals with chronic pain and I try to understand and be as sympathetic as possible. Watching your videos really helps with this. On a different note, I went through a bit of a breakdown in January where I almost dropped out of my PhD because I was suffering so much from burnout which was tied to my workaholic/perfectionistic/people-pleasing tendencies. I realized in therapy most of what I do in life (and work) is to be impressive to other people (wow, you did this work so fast or wow your resume is so impressive for your age). Since then I have made such an effort to be impressive to myself and my friends (wow, I'm so happy with my plant collection which I spent hours caring for today). Between therapy, meditation, and hard conversations with myself, I have made such a switch in my life and I feel better, healthier, and happier.

My pain level is lower, as long as I stay out of the sun and heat, but honestly some times I don’t feel how bad the pain is while I’m with them. I’m still trying to figure out a few things with my pain and swelling. A couple Drs think I have an allergy to the Sun and that I’m extremely heat intolerant. I was a practice manager for a large veterinary medicine hospital. I've suffered from migraines for years and the owner was wonderful. I get Botox, nerve blocks, medications and serious pain meds. The owner sold the practice to a corporation and the district manager and president were complete a-holes. Did not understand chronic pain and the need for multiple dr appointments and PTO. The PM actually had the nerve to tell me to take some Excederin or Goody's Headache Powders and deal with it. 2 weeks later I was gone. Told them I could not work for a company that did not respect employee health--physical or mental. I'm 54, financially stable and happier than I've ever been. I refuse to work in pain and jeopardize my later years. I miss the puppies and kitties but not the corporate BS. I adore you Taylor!!!

Taylor , you hit the nail squarely on the head!!!! Yes this culture really makes us feel as if we are nothing without our work. I dedicated 10 years of my life to caring for my Mom and my Aunt and working full time, once they passed and I retired I was so lost. I am grateful to be able to take the time to figure out who I am now. I learned that good enough is GOOD ENOUGH . I learned to love myself again and enjoy each day just doing what I like. I was finally able to ‘drop the facade’ and just be me. Thank you so much for being vulnerable.
