Bendheim Boards

3 жыл бұрын

Repairing surfboard dings and a damaged nose. I sanded with 80 grit sandpaper and then applied two-layer patches of 4oz fiberglass cloth with laminating resin and then sealed it with sanding resin. I sanded the repairs progressively up to 600 grit sandpaper. I also used Solarez for one of the smaller repairs. I then made the new paint design with a blue Liquitex acrylic spray paint and white Posca paint pens. Lastly I used clear acrylic spray paint to seal the paint.

I started repairing my own boards a couple of months ago and reshaped one I found in the trash. I’ve looked up a sh$t ton of videos on shaping and repair on KZbin. Your video is by far the best visual explanation of repairing a board. All I literally had to do was watch this video just to refresh myself as I haven’t done it in about a month and somewhat forgot the little details. Thanks man 🤙

A couple tips. 1) Never make the edge of your patch go straight across the board (perpendicular to stringer). You create a transition that could leave the board prone to breaking in that spot. 2) If you wait for the microballon slurry to start to kick off, it'll be about the consistency of cheese, and you can come back and shape it with a razor blade. Saves a ton of sanding when reshaping on nose and tail. You can use the leftovers in your cup to tell when the slurry has kicked the right amount.

My senior year of high school I decided to fix a surfboard that my dad's friend gave me years ago because they were getting a new one that was less dinged. I've always wanted to surf so I fixed it up, didn't do nearly as good of a job but it works (I think). God damn I didn't do nearly as good of a job, next time I need to fix it ill take notes. Still haven't gotten to go because literally every time my friend want to go conditions are shit and the drive is a little 2hrs most days (less with traffic). Hers hoping I can use it soon when were all allowed back to school.

@Surfers of siargao no worries bro! Another little tip is if there's a hole on a flat part of the board, fill the hole with resin and then stick cellophane tape over (on top) of the resin and long enough so that it overlaps the hole. It will squeeze excess resin (wipe the excess away) and more importantly, it will make sure that the resin level is level to the board, which also means less sanding work and a nice level and smooth surface.

Very hypnotic time lapse video. One thing I can't seem to figure out. If you put on two layers of glass won't it cure significantly higher than the rest of the board so that when you sand the new repair to.make the repair for to.thr rest of the board you are effectively sanding off all the new glass?
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 3 жыл бұрын
It’s hard to tell in the video but you sand down the repair area below the level of the board so you can build it back up to the level of the board with the new patches.

Great video, thanks man. Question; I have bought Epoxy resin to use to repair a broken section on the nose, but I am not sure what the board composition actually is. Its quite old,10+years, but from what I have been able research epoxy will work on any board type (whereas Poly will melt epoxy boards). So I am just wondering is this assumption correct? And secondly, do you need to apply fiberglass after you have applied filler and sanded, or is this just to provide more strength?
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 3 жыл бұрын
Yes epoxy works with both EPS and PU blanks but it’s best to use the same resin the board was constructed with for repairs. Since your unsure, epoxy will still work even if it was glassed with poly resin. At least that’s what I’ve read because I’ve never tried it myself. Just be sure to sand down the area really well to get a good mechanical bond. Yes fiberglass gives it the strength needed so I wouldn’t skip that step. The only time I don’t use fiberglass is if I’m using Solarez because it has chop-strand fiberglass in it already. Good luck 🤙

Nice video and very informative. In the old days used to use a rough cut piece of foam to fill a big defect, just resin for small ones. Is the color of a surfboard normally applied via final coat paint or is it aplied in a lower layer under finish?
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. There are multiple ways to add color. Most often the color is added in the resin that saturates the fiberglass cloth. Or it is painted or sprayed directly onto the foam blank before it’s glassed.

I haven’t but I’m sure I’ll get around to doing some. Thanks for the suggestion 🤙

Hey dude! first of all, I absolutely love your videos! Secondly, not sure if this questions been answered previously but what filler are you using for those repairs? it always looks so clean. I've been using glass bubbles (Qcell) with epoxy and I find on the surface I get quite a lot of issues with pin holes, they're easy to fill and remove when adding the glass and hot coat after but your process seems to be so much cleaner. Thanks

Thanks man, I use q-cell for filling my ding repairs as well. I'm not sure whats causing your pin-holes but it might be with the mixing process and getting air pockets in the resin. I might get some small ones myself but they just get filled in the laminating process anyway as you mentioned 🤙

Hey guys! Thanks for the video! Question about the Q-cell : what ratio do you apply for mixing your epoxy resin with the q-cell? And do you use hardener for this mixing (if yes, how much?)? ...... THANKS !@@BendheimBoards
