I love this talk so much. I recently met someone new, and she’ll give me tools to learn. All to be competent. I would always fight back, as I assumed she hated me. But now looking back at how those tools helped me grow, and how this talk expands on this. I appreciate my friend 10x more.

Life is tough, but modern society allows children to be soft and fragile. If you are a fragile person, life will smack you, and you will crumble. Personal strength should be your central life philosophy.

This reminds me of the book called "Mindset" by Carol S Dweck. Both Jean-Marie and Carol speak of this wrong way of praising our kids, we should praise their effort, not their "talents"

@Jean-Marie Schmidt Great speaker-to-audience interactions! I hope you'll be able to see this comment Jean-Marie since I have a small question. Not sure if you have ever watched the 2014 movie "Whiplash" starring Miles Teller, but JK. Simmons's character is an excellent representation of an extremely tough love. Do you think that form of tough love still creates "success seekers" using the "failure avoider" mindset? In the movie's conclusion, the student eventually becomes successful, but at the cost of much psychological, emotional, and physical pain. Where should the line be drawn for parents, teachers, students, and friends to use tough love to instill the "success seeker" foundations?

Hello Joshua. Thank You. I am not familiar with the movie. I think though its important to note here that "tough" refers to structure, consequences in the interaction. What makss it work is when it is incorporated in love. Which means in an atmosphere where a persons emotional centre remains in its green zone. Any form of tough love that affects the emotional zone negatively won't lead to success seeking. Great observation on your part! @Joshua Sanchez

I think there could be a fine line between tough love and abuse, would you like to tell us what you mean by tough love?
@Teacher2dabone4 жыл бұрын
By Tough Love I refer to educating our children by setting standards for them and expecting them to meet these standards. We teach them and expect them to work hard using effective strategies. We are “Tough” on them . At the same time, we must support them and be present with then in this process by being there for them. Guiding and supporting them to achieve their goals.

I don't like this talk at all. She preaches tough love then proceeds to explain the opposite of what people in general consider tough love. Also I hate when speakers demand the audience to perform. If you didn't bring your visual aids, I'm not one of them, and I'm not in class anymore. I'm not repeating your mantras and I'm not standing up on command. Finally tough love is a concept that needs to die. First, it's useless, because what's tough to one person, it's indifferent to another and even pleasurable to a third, and second, educators have turned it around to mean the opposite, and when they endorse it, lay people think that their understanding of tough love is what's being endorsed.

@ Autotuna. Clearly you have no understanding of what was going on. That is ok. What is not ok is that you draw conclusions on my person and my talk without asking a question. And without knowing what the definition is of “Tough Love” as coined by me in terms of Educational Sciences is … As my nana always says: ask questions to be made wise. I am glad to enlighten you. Don’t get me wrong. You don’t have to like my talk. However you should know what you are talking about before drawing conclusions on someone or something without having all the facts.

@@Jaikay1 chasting is your interpretation. I am not chastising anyone. If the individual wants to know something or does not understand let that individual ask a question.
