ATG featured an article on Mohammad Ehab awhile back on his own quad static holds (except he did his with a barbell). Anyway, the gist of the why was that he believed the exercise developed stability in the knee by evening out muscle growth from hundreds of incomplete recoveries of cleans, snatches, and squats.
