Those cold opens featuring Maya Rudolph, James Austin Johnson, Dana Carvey, Andy Samberg & Gaffigan were some of the best in a good while. Everyone brought their “A” game, the only exception was the usually stellar Bowen Yang-he had trouble finding the funny in J.D. Vance. The rest were just great though. It’s the only part of the election I’ll miss!

@@DaneOrschlovsky I'm a Democrat and you're absolutely right. My Party keeps putting up the worst candidates. Hillary Clinton was another weak candidate, but she went to the Al Smith dinner and ACED it. She was funny and despite insulting so many people earlier in her campaign she was at least still willing to ask for people's votes. I think that's why she won the popular vote. I don't know what we're going to do now. The Democratic brand is toxic.

100%..they’re having a conversation about SNL like it has the same impact it did 20, 30, or 40 years ago. The show has been mostly unfunny, uninteresting and non-impactful for a very long time. Loren’s batting average, as Gaffigan referred to it, is putrid for the last 2 decades. They even figured out a way to reel Shane Gillis in and make his episode boring and unfunny. Saying this as someone who grew up in the Farley/Sandler era and used to watch it every Saturday. That said, Gaffigan and Conan are hilarious still. They should have had Gaffigan host instead of just using him for a bit role that’s now never going to be brought back.

@dub9raider I can count on one hand the number of episodes I've heard about in recent years. And I'd still have half my fingers down on that hand. I've heard the whole environment is incredibly toxic. It wouldn't shock me if that's the main reason it's so irrelevant now, besides the obvious vacuum of talented comedians on their payroll. Yes, Conan and Gaffigan are very funny. They can still have Gaffigan come on to host.

Historians argue about whether individuals matter in the course of history. It seems obvious to me that replacing Alexander the Great with Alexander the Mouth Breather would have lead to different outcomes, so I have already made up my mind on the argument. But it seems like Lorne Michaels and SNL are another good example of where things would have gone very differently if another person had been in that position. And SNL has definitely had measurable effects on US culture and politics, and therefor on history.
