Gulman is a master craftsman -- the monologue as a work of art. The writing, the phrasing, the calculated pause...As in all true art, the effort disappears, and we're left just with appreciation and a smile on our face.

Gary Gulman is about 20 years too late to be as legendary as Seinfeld. The material is great, but it's his style of delivery. He doesn't tell jokes, he tells stories - and beyond that, the magic is in his conversations with himself. The bits are so well crafted. Every word and phrase isn't just funny, but it feels perfectly selected for maximum effect.
@davebartholome29243 жыл бұрын
Also seems like a nicer guy than Seinfeld. (Although I enjoyed some of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” after a while I kinda felt like I didn’t wanna spend any more time with this Seinfeld guy. Maybe he made too damn much money. . . .)
@Yochillitsthatserious3 жыл бұрын
What is Seinfeld’s legend without the shows. Stand up alone where would he have ranked? Genuine curiosity
@feverpa3 жыл бұрын
@@Yochillitsthatserious It's impossible to say what Seinfeld's legacy would be without the show. I know he was basically considered the best stand up comedian in the world. I'm not sure anyone elevates themselves to that status without doing more than just stand up in clubs. Think about the all-time greats. Really only George Carlin stayed in his lane 'mostly' throughout his career. He did SOME other stuff, but didn't rely on movies or a sitcom or anything to bolster his image. If you evaluate them JUST on stand-up then it becomes about longevity, delivery, timing, how prolific they were in terms of writing new material. Seinfeld wrote a TON, but also admits to using old material a lot throughout his career.

Ricky Gervais once shared a great perspective on criticism: "The best way to avoid criticism is never do anything ever. Or, do what you love, have a great life & let others spend their time criticising."
@usernumberonetrillion615610 жыл бұрын
False. If you never do anything ever, I'm sure plenty of people would call you a loser and criticize you for not having a life.
@severalpaperclips10 жыл бұрын
UserNumber OneTrillion Ok, I'll bite: To show Gervais' first sentence to be false, it's not sufficient to demonstrate one instance where "never doing anything" failed to prevent criticism. To show his first sentence to be false, you need to show that another strategy is more effective at avoiding criticism. And it could be that his first sentence isn't *literally* true. That's not the point. The point is that no matter what a person does, people will find a way to criticize it. Gervais was expressing the view that producing works that will inevitably be criticized by others is more fulfilling and a better use of one's time than doing nothing and/or criticizing the work of others. For that, I score him a 7 out of 10.
@severalpaperclips10 жыл бұрын
