As a guy who pointed airplanes in the right direction for 26 years, among other things, Bill has a good take on this that I love. Sure we worked hard to repair and maintain our aircraft, but the pilot takes the real chance on us doing the job right and he/she makes it home. And having a sense of humor in the military is a good thing. A good practical joke or a little "dark" humor gets you through the tough times.

very true, I remember an experience where I was in the hospital with the convict that was on life support. had to be there sitting with him even though he couldn't go anywhere until I was properly relieved. paramedics the came in had a dark sense of humor just to get through the day and or night. same with the nursing staff. but at the end of the day they knew it was their job, did they didn't do their job people might die. however they weren't running around with signs all over their body saying look at me, pay homage to me. I don't know how many people I met in my lifetime after 9/11 that magically started putting firefighter all over their vehicles and their clothing on their skin. I remember asking several if they were there the New York City when it happened or Washington DC? half of them where from random jerkwater towns from anywhere USA, and had no ties to that day. and all the 9/11 First Responders that I have known, we're quiet about it and dealt with it in their own way and weren't carrying around their Banner to seek attention.

I’m not a vet, but his sentiment here toward the word “hero” seems to be aligned with those who are. My Grandpa was a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne and saw combat in the Battle of Luzon. When our local paper wrote a story about him, he hit ‘em with this quote, “Don’t call a regular soldier a hero. A hero is someone who did something above and beyond the normal in a difficult situation. What I did was a standard military-type operation: I was shot at and I shot back, the normal wartime routine.”
@Flash_3452 жыл бұрын
@Michael Lochlann then your standards are low. And your words do nothing to actually help them. 👍

@TigerTabCat12 жыл бұрын
My grandfather was there as well! Though not a paratrooper but regular infantry since he was stationed there at the start of the war. It’s interesting how watered down “hero” is today. Audie Murphy, now that guy is a hero. Regardless though, even if your grandpa doesn’t believe himself to be a hero, I’m sure you will always remember and deeply respect his service. I hope you remember his stories and pass them down. My grandfather never shared his experiences and we’ve been spending long years piecing together what we can from his medals and foggy memories from my older aunts and uncles who were children at that time.
@sebastianorellana39122 жыл бұрын
@Michael Lochlann i think the military is ontologically evil
@Hayyyward2 жыл бұрын
@Michael Lochlann But not everyone in the military should be respected. You don't have to say anything to them or buy them a beer as they do not deserve it. That is the point Bill Burr was trying to make. A boss I worked for years ago had a nephew in the miltary and he was injured on duty overseas. At a Christmas party, I remember several people thanking him for his service. The guy did nothing. In fact, he had a girlfriend and a kid that he basically abandoned. Did not pay child support nor provide financially when away. After his injury, he got a good chunk of money from the government because he learned he could claim PTSD and they would pay more money. Close to $50,000 he got and within about six months, he spent most of it on alcohol, drugs, strippers, and a new car while he sat around playing video games most of the time. His kid never saw any of that money while he and his mother were struggling. This is just one example but an example of many in the military that deserve no respect whatsoever.

Let's make a distinction here. As someone who served in the US military, we are NOT paid well UNLESS you go into the military with a college degree or you join as a commissioned officer. If, like most Americans, you join the military as Enlisted, you typically start from the lowest rank and make dirt for money. Your first two months in basic training, you basically don't get a paycheck because they take the money out of your pay for the clothes and shoes you needed to join in the first place, as well as toiletries and other supplies. If you join with a college degree, you have the potential to join Enlisted as an E-4 starting out, which still isn't super great money. The only real way to take advantage of it is to get married, since you are then allotted Basic Housing Allowance. "Free room and board" is great when you're a young, single kid. But it's not paradise. You share your studio apartment barracks room with another soldier 95% of the time. You are responsible for keeping the entire building clean, including the parking lot. Your room can be unlocked and walked into at any given time for a room inspection. There are rules for who you can have in your room and how long they can stay. That's only a few of the rules, there are a ton more. Most people with a brain move off-post as soon as possible. I left the army as a Sergeant (E-5) and still wasn't being paid very much money compared to the amount of work you have to do. Keep in mind you're on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Sometimes literally 24 hours a day when you're on CQ duty.

Military are Not paid well in the US, at least not the lower ranks. But there are nice benefits, like student loan forgiveness, low cost (not free) medical insurance with no deductibles, housing allowance, which can take the edge off rent or pay it completely with some leftover. There is a trade off though: being separated from your family for training and deployment, on-call 24/7 even when you are home, the possibility of death or life changing injury or mental trauma

As a man coming from a nation where military service is mandatory, I honestly don't understand all the standing ovation soldiers get in America. It's a job. I mean they even get paid and receive personal privaledge to every service. I don't mean that one shouldn't appreciate their hard work but expecting one to physically cheer and treat soldiers with higher supriority is just absurd. If they deserve to be treated like kings where ever they go, same should happen to community clean up colunteerers, etc..
@CarmenSanata6 жыл бұрын
Wonton As far as I can understand it, it's a job not a lot of people are even eligible for, and out of that miniscule pool some still join, knowing their could be a threat to life. The pushups, long months away from family, and belief in Paladins almost (warriors of high character) is what drives the respect. Compared to many jobs after all, the military makes kinda average pay; one is far safer going into Computer Science but makes about as much as an Officer whom is im charge of anywhere from 30-300 people

HandyMan101 Are you American?
@stardude2896 жыл бұрын
From what I've seen being inside the military, less than 1% of the American population is in the military, so it's not something everyone can do, as some don't want to join, some want to join but they can't due to medical reasons and we have folks that respect the fact that my fellow servicemen stay long months away from family and home doing dangerous jobs. I find it awkward when someone walks up to me and thanks me for my service, but if that's something that that civilian wants to do, then let them. It makes their day.

Bill Burr is right. I was in the military, 82nd Airborne, but I never deployed. There were things I did even just in training that would make the average civilian crap their pants, but as I said, I did not go to war or deploy to any sort of combat zone. I appreciate when someone thanks me for my service, but I'm averse to any kind of military worship. It's very awkward to me, and there are many people who aren't even in the military that display heroism. We can revere combat vets (my brother is one) without worshipping them. There also shouldn't be any limits to humor in this regard in my opinion.

"wounded warrior" is truly a joke in that context. I am from germany and the stationed GI´s here have a super relaxed time. Everything beyond save and great infastructure. A lot of people speak english pretty well and are usually very friendly to americans even though they tend to carry this over confident USA-arrogance most of the time while being pretty badly educatet/sophisticated, compared to a lot of people in german society. Low education goes hand in hand with military service. That is just how it is usually everywhere in the world. They have their own barbeques and bars near the base where easy girls hang out who want to "get to know" some GI´s in uniform. A lot of unacknowlaged kids came out of that througout the years. No problem.. german government pays support. Pretty easy time if you ask me. At least far from war heroes ;) Still sad what happend to your cousin and I wish him the best.

I definitely agree with the pointer hero. I was a wheeled vehicle mechanic in the US Army and my active duty station was in an aviation unit. Our main group of vehicles being used, and therefore most frequently in need of repairs were 30 fuelers that were under warranty from the civilian manufacturer. I was a hero at playing spades and handing out quarts of oil and headlight bulbs.

Oh man, this entire piece, the brilliant casual lead-in, the build-up, the best of all, the punch line, which was actually an incredibly well timed void. "If you are the guy that points in the direction the plane takes off in?", then the PAUSE. Bill Burr has reached the Zen of the art of stand up comedy. Genius.

It's so true what Bill is saying. Military personnel are cool with certain things but regular people who've never served are the ones always trying to speak for the military and what's offensive to them.

sounds a lot like the wannabe SJW who protest to protest so they feel emotionally good for themselves and fall short of really attempting to fix the problems at hand.
@kevinconnor60355 жыл бұрын
@@seanstrack4022 Yes, the culture has been poisoned on both sides. SJW's get all the blame (and they deserve plenty), but the their counterparts on the right are just as bad. They just care about different things: you can never insult the military or the Republican president or "you're un-American and you should leave." You can't kneel during the anthem or you're a Communist. You can't point out that many rural conservatives are uneducated or you're "an intellectual elitst." You can't point out that most of this country's financial and intellectual power is based on the coasts and in Chicago, or you're elitist. You can't point out that religious fervor has led to all kinds of stupid actions in this country, or you're demeaning religion. And on and on. And I've only focused on the right because the SJW's bellyaching is already so well-documented. It's never going to get better until everybody on both sides just chills the hell out and focuses on real problems. Football players taking a knee is not a real problem. Lack of diversity in movie casts is not a real problem. It's ridiculous.

ted yancey when I was in the Marines they had this joke. In the infantry an officer gives you a pep talk and says go out and win one for me guys... do me and America proud. The air wing an officer says well boys I hope I do you proud and goes off and fights. I know I’ve fucked this up. I’m horrible at jokes but the punch line was something along the lines of we know who scored higher on the asvab.

My dad is in the Canadian army and saw combat Afghanistan back in 2008 and went to Kuwait last year for non-combat purposes. He's a vet through and through and dedicated his life to serve yet I asked him how he feels when people say 'Thank you for your service' and his response was 'I don't hate when people say it because it comes from a good place but I never know how to respond to it. It's just my job.'

As a Vet I absolutely abhor the clapping at the airport thing. PLEASE STOP. We did our job to the best of our ability under the circumstances. No need for forced acknowledgement. Best thing you can do is BE a GENUINE GOOD person and pay it forward. Seriously! Be a hero for yourself selfishly without the need for any external approval or ego-induced motivation. I am a veteran and went on 2 deployments, I was never in combat don't consider myself any sort of hero and can't stand the thank you for your service stuff. I don't take free meals on veterans day I don't even try to use discounts. I got paid to go and while the paycheck was low for some people it was good enough for me for the deployments. Hero worship is dumb just pay people and give them health care for when they get injured or suffer from related things.
