I was going to ask the same question as it was starting to look like they took the good motor out and chucked a dead motor in before sending it out for sale.

@@bignaughtydog its not a case of being morally correct, all MIL equiptment is given a life and cost time span and when it costs more to repair that the vehicle is worth they get sold, so if you have a vehicle thats at the end of it's service time and has a low hour engine it makes sense to replace it with a dead or dying one before going to auction for public sale. thats why i thought this was the case here, maybe its different with the US system as apposed the the UK

@@mack1541 Hi Mack. Thank you for your comment. I don't know much about plant vehicles really. I can't offer any opinion only that I wouldn't thank you for a dead or dying engine. Awesome job! Just a little FYI from a 24 year retired army guy, your average Joe army mechanic aren’t allowed to go that deep into an engine. Basic services only, maybe an alternator replacement. The next level of mechanics are what’s called 3rd shop. The 3rd shop mechanics mostly consist of civilians with a very few Joes mixed in. They’re the ones that will pull an engine and work on them in more depth but they don’t rebuild them. When the engine needs rebuilt, that’s at the depot level which consists of civilian contractors. Exceptions being when it comes to pulling a Abrams (tank) and a Bradley (infantry fighting vehicle) the unit level mechanics will pull those engines or what we call “pulling the packs.) Every 6 month service includes pulling the packs and ground starting them outside of the vehicle so they can visually check them. These guys have to work under crazy conditions. Being a Cavalry scout for all them years, I never understood why they would want to be a mechanic in the army. They get blamed for everything when vehicles aren’t up and ready.

He's acting like younger kids do. Definitely being respectful and cautious. When I was younger I worked with my dad all the time. Summer breaks, heh, what summer breaks. Honestly I hated it. Now years later I wouldn't change a thing. I learned SO much, so many skills. Engine building, fabricating, welding, pipe fitting, hydraulics, heavy equipment operating and on and on. It's actually what has allowed me to provide for myself and run my business. I can definitely relate to the young lad. Edit, I shouldn't of said hated it, more like I was jealous of all my friends who were out goofing around etc. Now guess who fixes all their stuff??

Hunter is learning how i did from my dad 50 years ago. He could listen to a D8 running and order parts. Had me crank a D8 with a starting engine that had to be started with a hand crank when i was 10 years old. I miss him dearly.

I guess the o ring sucked in the by pass valve didn't allow the oil to be filtered,wich is what caused the bearing wear,leading to low oil pressure,and failure. That's not normal to not have an automatic engine shut off in case of too low oil pressure,specially on heavy equipment.

Great job Guys! Clint it's Great to see you and your son's working together on the equipment. I started helping out working on equipment when I was 14 and I made $1.85 an hour. I would have done it for free because to me it was fun. I learned more than just how to work on things but how to maintain and service the things I owned and operated. Because I got to see what equipment looked and ran like when they weren't taken care of. Your teaching your son's more than just how to work on things but how to take care of the things that they own. 👍🏻

I liked it when you said freeze plug. That's a mechanic talking as a machinist those are expansion plugs. They are there to plug the holes that are cast in the casting to blow the sand out after casting. Just saying.

I've used those parts washers in the past. I recommend that as soon as you turn it off, rinse the parts down with fresh water to remove the cleaning solution and then blow them dry with air and spray them down with WD-40 to prevent flash rust. I recommend doing all of that right away as soon as you open the door.

Clint looks to me like your doing a fine job teaching Hunter. One word to the wise for u and Hunter after some 50yrs as a diesel mechanic be very careful with the hands fingers and rubbing of the very fine pcs of metal and shavings as they get embedded in your skin, you can get a very serious infection from the shavings in that oil. I learned from several of these infections. Just words of wisdom from an old diesel mechanic. Enjoy watching you and the guys .
