For those that have a GPT disk (Basically any modern Windows 10 PC has them) and have the "Erase and Install" option grayed out: - Partition 1 GB from the installer and set it as fat32 - Partition the rest you want to be your Linux work space - Select the 1GB fat32 partition: Tick "User Partition" and "Format" and select Boot(/boot/efi) - Select the rest as Root / and format it and also "Use partition" - I also recommend making a swap partition. Do your own research as to how much you need to allocate. But, for 8GBs of RAM, 16 should be enough.

This comment from Sime is definitely good advice, BUT you actually need only 2/5 of your RAM as swap minimum for hibernation and not 2x like he said, that is a common misconception people have because they think they need more than 1x. But I would recommend going for the 1x of your RAM so you have enough not only for hibernation and to be safe not going for the bare minimum. So for 8GB RAM, it would be 8GB swap, but you could run 4GB if you want to save drive space, let's say your SSD is only 120GB. Do 1x or 1/2x. I recommend 1x though.

Some people are commenting about the update grub not working. "The update-grub command is simply a stub for running ‘grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg’ to generate grub2 config file." Run this instead - sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg Like this if it helps so others can see it.

Good basic overview. Wld be good to stress that Windows partition goes first in order. To dual boot Windows with Linux, you need the following four partitions (five partitions if you keep a recovery partition): Windows, Root, Home, and Swap. EFI FAT32 Grub 300mb/512mb WINDOWS NTFS 30gb min Linux ROOT EXT4 Following not vital: SWAP EXT4 (Better for older PCs) FREE EXFAT/FAT32 On a UEFI based computer, you must have an EFI system partition that is 512 MB in size. This is where you install the GRUB bootloader when prompted by the Linux installation.

This guide is not valid for EFI based systems. For the latter, the creation of a /boot/efi partition is mandatory (you don't create it during the installation) otherwise the installation can't go on. After the installation, the system will automatically boot into POP OS. To enable GRUB (which is not installed by default on POP OS) you have to install it by terminal and go through a brief configuration. I followed a guide on KZbin by KSK Royal. After it, the classic GRUB window is shown at the system boot, allowing the selection of Pop OS or Windows 10.

I came here after installing Arch alongside Windows 8.1 on my 10 year old machine (it is my primary machine) and I don't like how the Windows bootloader appears before grub because I installed windows after Arch. Now when I do try to boot into arch, I have to go through the windows "metro" bootloader which loads windows completely before even asking you which os you wanna boot into which is fast and convenient if I do want Windows but very slow if I wanted to boot into Arch since it has to reboot to unload the windows files it just loaded and then boot into grub and then load Arch.
