@@Winnetou17 Intel will happily sell the Kabbylake CPUs on 7th, 8th, and 10th gen with different motherboards with non-compatible sockets and zero improvement in performance and a slightly better GPU, Recently someone resoldered the socket to *prove* you can swap them across generations without any issues. Intel also follows the same process as AMD with server CPUs lagging behind desktop, aggressive binning has been standard since 2000 as a cost cutting method, The difference is Intel has been trying to maximize profit at the expense of their own customers and the environment for years, They'll happily create artificial barriers like having a half-dozen chipsets that provide different features, they won't support ECC RAM on desktop without specific chipsets, and they won't let you overclock unless it's the most expensive K model, and they won't let you replace a broken motherboard with a newer model without replacing the CPU either.

I find an extended socket life to only be of limited use. Sure, you can "upgrade" and get a little more raw compute power ... but you get nothing else. None of the other new features. Because your motherboard doesn't support them. If you want the features, that means a new chip set, which means a new motherboard anyways. I guess it's cool for those people who just have to upgrade every year or two, but I only upgrade once every 6 or so years. So with that much time, I'm going to want all the features that were added. As an example, I just went to the 7800X3D and because I got a new motherboard to go with it ... I get resizable bar that my previous motherboard never supported (even though the CPU did). That's a pretty important feature in today's games.
